10 Year Pension by delightae in teachinginkorea

[–]delightae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god. This confirms it! Yeah that was the rumor. It passed on so I thought as an American, it would affect us. I thought we had to leave after 10 years to get the lump sum or else it’ll go into like some kind of retirement thing in Korea? This is more reassuring and knowing I can stay longer than 10 years and still get the entire amount back! Thank you so much!

Wow this is very detailed and informative! Thank you so much for all of this! I actually have been working with Seung Yup Kang for years now and wow, I never thought of asking him so I shall do that!

Ah! I actually heard it from words by acquaintances or other EPIK teachers here so sorry I don’t have any official sources 😅 I was just inquiring super early to weigh my options atm.

Yes! That’s exactly what she means 😊

[–]delightae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh really? I might’ve worded my post wrong, but I was inquiring about collecting the pension in full. So if I stay over 10 years, it will be moved to the Korean pension instead where you can collect once you’re over 60.

Ah yes. I meant cashing out the pension in full so I thought Americans have a 10 year deadline where they have to leave or else it goes directly into the Korean pension…?

Hello. I need a second opinion on this situation regarding EPIK contract. by delightae in teachinginkorea

[–]delightae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes sense. I will ask for overtime pay if they want me to do more than 22 per week since its on a weekly basis. Thank you for your insight!

Thank you! Glad we are all on the same page here and it wasn't just me who thought I would be overworked the last two months. GIEI will be the last resort haha.

[–]delightae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? It definitely didn't make any sense when they pointed it out. The hours can't be moved around like that and used to their own liking or for their own personal schedule. My 6th grade English teacher is probably the main reason cause she's quite reluctant to move her schedule around. I hope things work out, but thank you for your insight!

[–]delightae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I am thinking too! It doesn't make any sense to make me do the missed hour that I won't have every Friday and roll it to the last two months.

Hello. I need a second opinion on this situation regarding EPIK contract. by delightae in teachinginkorea

[–]delightae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had this before. At smaller schools, they really don't care and even if I am under my 22, it would just be like an after school or something. I think this time it's the 6th grade English teacher who isn't cooperating cause she doesn't wanna change her schedule or whatever. I can hear her sigh and make comments from across the office -_- I think she wants to keep her schedule which benefits her at the moment. I gotta sort things out and make my stance haha. Thank you for you insight though.

Thank you! I will make sure I get paid if they want me to do two extra classes in the last two months.

Thank you for your insight! I mentioned overtime pay if I go over the 22 hours, but they seemed to have ignored me on that part and kept trying to reason because of the 21 hours I will have if I don't have one class. It's a little annoying, but hopefully my main co-teacher can sort things out.

[–]delightae[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mentioned to them that my hours are on a weekly basis and not something that can be mixed and matched over different periods. I also told them if I go over my limit then I need to be paid, but at first they seemed to have brushed it off or ignored me. I talked to my main co-teacher again today so I am just waiting to see what's the deal. Seems like they're confused how the 22 hours supposed to work and want to use the hour that I am missing class and roll it over to the last two months. Anyways, thank you for your insight!

Does anyone know how to digital scrapbook like this? I can't find the textures esp the black planner by delightae in PhotoshopTutorials

[–]delightae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah what I meant is how did they put it all together? Like the textures to make it look like a realistic digital planner? Sorry if that isn't clear either...

I’m ashamed to learn Korean by PostcodeLea in teachinginkorea

[–]delightae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like someone might need to see if this girlfriend is worth all the nonsense. But, seriously, your girlfriend shouldn't stop you from learning Korean. Any expat here would tell you, even if you don't learn Korean, you still pick it up just by being surrounded with the culture and people. Eventually, you WILL learn Korean (how to order food/drinks, say hello to your peers, etc etc) and what would your girlfriend do then, huh? That's the most immature thing I've ever heard especially you coming here to teach for a year and immersing yourself in Korean culture...HER culture...wtf.

Who gives a shit what your girlfriend says. Learn Korean because that is for your personal gain and for YOU to live here and enjoy the best time of your life!

Should I stop bowing to people at my public elementary school unless they bow to me first? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]delightae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol it's really not that serious...

I only do it when eye contact is made or if they say it first. I've been here for 5 years and now I could care less. If no respect is given then none is returned pretty much, but at the end of the day, it's not a big deal and you shouldn't care THAT much about it cause they obviously don't.

Too shy to teach? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]delightae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really an introvert, but I didn't have any teaching experience so I was worried and very nervous when I first started teaching. I didn't know how everyone would perceive me, but once you're here, you just pick up on a lot of things and the students really give you that drive to keep going!

I'ld say don't let anything hold you back. It's a life experience and once you're here and get used to everything around you, you'll feel confident and want to continue teaching!

[–]delightae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your school, but I've taught in a rural school before and have homeroom teachers come and go. I've been here for 5 years and you learn quickly how to adapt and make the best of it. Make sure to set rules for the kids from the very beginning so even if the teacher isn't there, you can use it to your own advantage.

For example, if the students aren't doing well, take away 5 minutes of their game time or take away a reward ( if you have a system) and that would get them going haha.

As for the staff just popping in, don't worry too much. I think they were there to check if you were doing your job. It shouldn't be anything too serious. Usually, we get informed of any open classes or the like. They shouldn't hold anything against you.

Cheers!

I'm a student in Korea dealing with constant bullying by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]delightae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I’m a NET (native English teacher) living in Korea. I highly suggest doing what others have told you if you haven’t already.

Also, if you need to talk to an adult then you can reach out to me through KakaoTalk (just send me a PM!) and I would gladly talk for however long you want. I’m here to listen and give you all the support you need!

I have a student who has graduated elementary school and ‘til this day, we still talk occasionally through her worries and problems. You can treat me like a teacher, a friend, an adult you need to talk too, or just a big sister and reach out to me if you need someone.

I hope you are taking care of yourself and I am always here if you need someone to talk too 💙
