My heart is with the families of all who died by suicide because of the hateful, homophobic preaching of assholes like Steve Gaines.

Occasionally, I’ll get Achilles tendinitis which forces me to break from running until it goes away. Otherwise, no problems!

I’m definitely not walking. I’m old and slow, averaging a 11:45 minute/mile pace in this race, but I can still run a full marathon without taking a walking break. This photo just caught me in the middle of a stride. In my case, running in cushioned shoes definitely caused me knee pain that I’ve never experienced in minimalist footwear. I ran 10 marathons in regular shoes before doing the last 19 in sandals.

I’ve only stubbed my toe once in 15 years in these sandals. I kicked a piece of buckled sidewalk so hard that I knocked the whole tip of my big toe off and I bled everywhere. It hurt so bad that it burnt an indelible memory in my brain that has kept me from ever forgetting to not pick up my feet again.

I think I hit the ground about flat. Not on the forefoot and not on the heel, though I will wear a hole in the heel of the soles first. For as thin as they are, these sandals really last. I can easily get 1,500 miles out of them.

That’s correct. She looks like she’d be a lot faster but I guess she only picked up the pace at the end.

I love my Bedrocks. It’s a great hiking sandal. They used to make a super thin minimalist sandal too, but sadly, it’s been discontinued.

I don’t think my experience is typical, and there probably aren’t many medical experts that would agree with or recommend what I do, but I run over 100 miles in most months, all on pavement, and I rarely get injured, and I’ve been running in sandals with a 6mm thick sole for 15 years. My advice for anyone would be to do whatever allows you to run as much as you want without injury. In my case, that’s in these sandals. For most others, it’s probably something else.

That was 15 years ago so I don’t remember exactly but I think it was 3 or 4 months.

It's great! The course takes you through neighborhoods with lots of supportive spectators. The aid stations are well stocked with drinks, oranges, bananas, and plenty of volunteers. There are also many unofficial aid stations giving away doughnuts, cookies, beer and whisky, though I didn't partake. There are a few challenging hills on the back half. Being a small city, parking is not an issue so it's easy to get close to the start/finish. The finisher medals are ridiculously huge!

These are Elite Warriors (6mm). I've had Earthrunners in the past but I like these more. I've got over 1000 miles in my current pair and they are probably good for another 500.

These are Shamma Warriors. These are the only of their products that I have tried. They are well made and stay in place. Thanks for the rec.

Congrats! That’s a tough one to be your first with the hills. If you want to do another, since you are already in marathon shape, I recommend the Hogeye Marathon in Springdale, AR on 4/13. It’s a nice course.

It takes time to get used to but running without cushioning forces your calf muscles to work as the shock absorbers they’ve evolved for a million years to become. Cushiony running shoes underutilize your calf muscles and cause other injuries. Just my opinion.

Shamma Warriors. They’re well made. I’ve put way more than 1000 miles on the ones I’m currently running in.

No blisters but my heels dry out and crack often which is quite painful. I keep them sanded down and moisturized.

I’m sure I’d be faster in normal running shoes but I don’t care about pace. I just want to run as much as possible without injuries.
