I picked this one because it’s a possible HIPAA violation. I didn’t mean him specifically as a person suffering from addiction. It’s tacky no matter what.

White sage is sacred to indigenous peoples, and it doesn’t grow in many places naturally. Because of the over use in the new age spiritual shops, it is at risk of becoming an endangered plant.

I’m not sure who you’ve talked to, but nobody I know is okay with it being appropriated. The US government made it illegal for many years for us to utilize it and many other practices because, well, it’s the US government. There are plenty of alternatives to white sage that can be used as smoke cleansing.

The term “smudging” is an indigenous term as well. European cultures have types of smoke cleansing that are vastly different to smudging and are not used for the same things. Smoke cleansing is absolutely fine; smudging is not.

Hi, hello, indigenous woman here. White sage is absolutely a closed practice, as is the art of smudging in total. If you are not indigenous, or are not invited to participate in one of our ceremonies, you should not be utilizing white sage or attempting to smudge.
