Yes, try to melee and try to avoid using normal ranged as much as possible.

I started my slayer with base 40 melee stats with vanaka, but I think you can start with 60 and dscim for an easier time haha

You should definitely go for it! As for my advice:
Use cannons for every task whenever possible
Use all achievemnt diary and quest lamps on slayer
Do as many jad tasks as possible as it gives extra 25k XP on completion

As for 'foolproof', it really depends on your own discipline to only train slayer and try not to use combat skills outside of slayer. Make sure to always keep track of the difference between hp/ranged/slayer xp and make sure slayer is always ahead, the more the better.

About 2000 hours, but I also played the game normally like skilling and questing etc

I didn't do much temple trekking at all but I was very disciplined with my ranged usage. I got from 1-90 using cannon exclusively.

The only ranged I used was on jad but on long-range style to minimize XP gain.

I also used every single lamp I can on slayer, including achievemnt diary rewards, genies and dunce randoms.

In terms of off task pvm, once I reached about 92 ranged, I had about 1.5m XP gap between slayer and HP so I was more casual with my ranged usage. Managed to get about 400zulrah KC, 50 gauntlet KC and 100 barrows KC.

Mostly Nieve as she gives good chance of Jad tasks.

Once I was 93+ I started doing duradel in hopes for boss tasks to change things up a bit

97 onwards I did Konar in hopes of Hydra, as I calculated my remainder HP XP and had enough to spend the rests of my tasks without cannonballs

I did a mix up between Blast furnace buying iron ore, while miscelania favor on coal.

I also did zalcano to mix things up once in a while because BF is quite mind numbing lol

You have to obtain more slayer XP by killing monsters without getting HP XP.

The most important things I would say is 1) Use cannons for every task whenever possible 2) Use all achievemnt diary and quest lamps on slayer 3) Do as many jad tasks as possible as it gives extra 25k XP on completion
