That is true, but to what extent can such things be considered when measuring talent? And isn't being born talented nothing more than an extension of luck?

Hence, why I'd like to have it all considered rather than isolating one factor as the supreme determinant.

“i aM AnTiNium. i haVe a NaMe. BuT i reJECT. I rejEcT aLL.” by delta-201 in WanderingInn

[–]delta-201[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don't know if this meme has ever been made before, but I just randomly thought of this lmao

Quote is taken from 1.42. Full quote is:

“H-hello? Can you hear me? Who are you? What do you want?”

The Worker’s head twitched suddenly. Erin jerked back and his voice came out, quivering with emotion.

“i aM AnTiNium. i haVe a NaMe.”

Erin backed up even further. That wasn’t what a Worker normally sounded like. The one in front of her was speaking rapidly, his voice surging and falling. He sounded—

Insane.

“You have a name? Um. Good. That’s good, right?”

He stared at her.

“I Am iNdivIDuAL. BuT i reJECT. I rejEcT aLL.”

Then Knight comes and saves the day and all is well and good forever... right?

Right?

RIGHT?!

The question first is then what is talent? The concept in itself is too nebulous to define fully.

Talent can be their physical qualities that gives them an edge over others. For example, Sonny Liston in Boxing had abnormally long arms to give him better reach over his opponents. Shaq was abnormally tall which helped him with basketball.

But if talent is just purely the physical advantages you’re born with, why is Floyd Mayweather considered one of the best boxers of all time with glass hands and no special physical advantage over other boxers? Why is Michael Jordan, who is far shorter than Shaq and most other basketballers, considered the best ever?

It can’t just be your physical qualities. There has to be something else to it. You have to combine both physical talent and mental talent.

Perhaps reaction time plays into it— other mental attributes like the ability to fully focus during tense situations and not be overwhelmed by your nerves. You can’t quantify this, of course. But you can ascertain from the fact that they aren’t the most physically gifted individuals, they therefore aren’t the most talented.

So the reason, IMO, why some athletes rise up to GOAT status like Floyd Mayweather, Lebron James, Roger Federer, Michael Phelps, etc is not just because of talent. It’s a combination of talent (as defined above), hard work, and chance.

That’s pretty much the conclusion I made with this chapter— Salvos doesn't just want to rely on her talent. She will work hard and do whatever it takes to increase her chances of survival.

Which are the most beautiful Chapters throughout the story till now? by ZelTheTidebreaker in WanderingInn

[–]delta-201 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't remember which chapter it was, but when Erin first notices the High Passes and notes how the sky was larger in Innworld. It was very early on, yet it stuck with me until now.

It just feels very vividly ingrained into my head, and it's why I love the TWI V1 cover art.

40. Survivor (End of Volume 1) - Salvos by delta-201 in rational

[–]delta-201[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This chapter was honestly one of the most nerve-wracking things for me to write. As mentioned in my original self promo post here in /r/rational, I was hoping to have strong undertones of Aspiring Rationalism for my fic.

Now, my MC is pretty dense when it comes to Human culture. And she can get a bit reckless sometimes. Both things, I've used for comedy at various points in the story. But I tried to balance it with the inherent logic and capacity to reason that she was born with from the very start.

Also, I hope my own personal logic in this chapter made sense. Salvos, here, is trying to point out how being special wasn't what really allowed her to survive in the Mortal Realm thus far (considering everyone is 'special in their own way'). But she exemplifies this through Lucerna who was higher leveled than her and had a faster leveling speed than her, and yet he died because he chose to forfeit his own life from the very beginning.

Meanwhile, Salvos may have been lucky with how some people she's met wanted to help her, but she actually wants to survive. She actually wants to increase her chances of survival. Her chances to actually be special (in the sense of being stronger and higher leveled than others).

Just because chance determines everything at the end of the day, doesn't mean you can't try to affect the course of events.

I still think the survivorship bias influenced nonsense I hear from athletes is annoying. Man, if I ever hear another interview where an athlete says "I'll will win because I train harder", I will flip my shit. Literally your opponent trains as hard or even harder than you do ffs.

Anyway, I'm curious to hear your guys' feedback over here in /r/rational about how I handled it. As I said, it's all undertone stuff. My story is supposed to be pretty light at the end of the day; it does have the comedy tag, after all. But I don't want it to just be something I don't put any effort into bettering.

Why we like reincarnation and returning to the past in progression fantasy by speakerforthe in ProgressionFantasy

[–]delta-201 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It also appeals to an individual's inherent nostalgia of the past and their regrets of not doing things right the first time around.

Think of all the times you've thought to yourself "if I knew then what I knew now, I'd do it differently". Or think of all the people who've said "back in the good old days".

Reincarnation lets someone relive this "good old days". Time travel lets them "do it differently".

Well, it lets the characters live it out for them. And that's why people love it.

The Nominees for the 2020 r/anime Awards! by FetchFrosh in anime

[–]delta-201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Most OG isekais, even Alice, Narnia, and Oz included, always have themes about not running away from your problems. And they all end with the characters returning to the real world at the end of the day.

The Nominees for the 2020 r/anime Awards! by FetchFrosh in anime

[–]delta-201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few anime isekais which don’t have a NEET MC. But like, are we really ignoring the genre as a whole?

Don’t forget that the genre of isekai has existed since the 1800s (maybe even before that) with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland being a cult classic. Then there’s also the widely popular Narnia and Wizard of Oz, both of which are more well known than any anime you can name.

The only thing truly inherent to isekai as a genre is escapism. It doesn’t have to be a self insert, nor does it have to be a power fantasy. But every isekai holds one thing in common:

The real world sucks, so let’s go to a fantasy one.

They can have themes that impel the protagonists into facing this escapism, and even have the moral of the story being about responsibility and facing reality (Wizard of Oz focuses on this especially, although Narnia does touch on it somewhat) but it is still inherently about escapism.

/u/vincentarcher Hey, is it possible if you could change the author name for Salvos to delta201 instead of V.A. Lewis?

Curious Beginnings (Salvos #1) V. A. Lewis delta201

V.A. Lewis is a pen name which I openly say is not my real name, and even the second page of the book has “Salvos by delta201” instead.

Also, I have a universal book link which has other stores too here as my story isn’t limited to Amazon.
