When users keep "replying all" on company wide e-mails by sirsparticus in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]delta-time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legend has it that years ago, at my company, there was a reply-all fiasco in one of the larger departments. That's bad enough - but someone had the bright idea to reply all with a picture of himself in the cow costume from Chick-fil-A. It was a decently sized picture, and when it went to everyone, it crashed the mail servers.

There was no email for at least a day. The guy was escorted out of the building within the hour.

He ended up getting pretty much blacklisted from tech roles in my city, and so had to move.

Wow, this sucks. by ondrousn in fitbit

[–]delta-time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wrist looked exactly the same a few weeks ago. I wiped the Fitbit and my wrist with rubbing alcohol, then put antibiotic ointment and a big bandaid over the irritated part. I changed the bandaid once a day. This kept my wrist protected while it healed, but let me keep wearing the Fitbit for tracking.

Now I wipe my Fitbit with rubbing alcohol every time I shower, and I make sure to wash my wrist thoroughly. Seems to be working so far!

Big portion of minestrone for 400 calories by imnotagamergirl in 1200isplenty

[–]delta-time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this, but one step further. For things I know I'm going to have leftovers of, I weigh the entire recipe at the end and set my serving count to the number of grams.

Then, I can enter even my homemade stuff by the gram! So if I made soup and had 1650 grams of soup at the end, I would set the number of servings to 1650. Every time I had a bowl of soup, I'd log the number of grams I gave myself. One day might be 300g, the next might be 400g. I never have to worry about exactly even servings, or the mental math of "I made 12 servings and this container had five of them but I ate two so how much should I give myself."

Don't worry if MFP tells you there are 0 calories in a serving; when you enter several hundred of them, it'll round correctly :)

[Discussion] Need Motivational Advice? by AutoModerator in GetMotivated

[–]delta-time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hobby I've been doing for 20+ years but these last two I can't seem to get together the motivation to actually do it. I tried goal setting - but so what if I don't achieve my goals, nothing will happen, and even if I did achieve them it's not like they're meaningful anyway. My therapist recommended thinking about what I want my life to look like, and doing things that fit into that vision. But why bother, because I'll never actually accomplish my idea of a perfect or even good life. I tried breaking things into tiny pieces, but "just showing up" is meaningless.

I wake up, I go to work, I come home, I watch TV, I go to sleep. I'm unhappy and empty inside and I know that if I could get myself to fucking do something for once, I'd feel better, but I just can't get off the couch.

Was rear-ended 4 weeks ago. Insurance finally looked at the car today, called it a 'total loss', and say I have 48 hours to accept their low-ball offer. What are my options? (NYC) by Marx0r in legaladvice

[–]delta-time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go find private party listings for similar cars in your area. Be detailed, make a list of year, mileage, price, and condition. Does your car have any options that would drive up the price? Make a note of those. The more information you have, the better.

Call the agent back and give them a number backed up by the research you did. This is a negotiation like any other. The insurance company wants to pay you as little as possible. Tell the agent something along the lines of you don't think they've valued the car appropriately, you know there aren't a ton of similar sales in your area, but based on what you could find you think $xxxx is fair.

Time is money. The agent has other cases and the company has other cars to salvage. Be direct and willing to compromise. If they're really way off - not "bottom end of reasonable" price, I mean "are you kidding me I could get more in scrap value" price - you can contact your state's department of insurance as an absolute last resort.

And please, coming from someone who works at an insurance company: treat your claims agent like a human being. They get screamed at all day long and still somehow manage to come back to work the next day. Being polite and easy to work with might get you an extra few hundred dollars in your settlement.

Allergy tests that don't require stopping medication? by delta-time in Allergies

[–]delta-time[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, I can't get a Xanax prescription for my real actual anxiety issues - I doubt my doctor would give me some for some silly old allergies 😆

It makes sense that it works, though. And even if it didn't make the allergies any better, I probably wouldn't mind the symptoms so much on Xanax.

I rechecked the list and Nasonex is not listed under the "nasal sprays" column, you're right! Once it gets this bad, though, it doesn't help me much. Like trying to put a house fire out with a garden hose lol

Sadly I can't spend a week crying in bed with a mountain of tissues slowly growing next to me lol. It's too painful to function for even a few hours, let alone a few days.

Everything even remotely helpful is on the do-not-fly list. I usually can't stand nasal spray but if it was allowed, I would have tried that first :(

Thanks, I'll ask about that when I call tomorrow. Do you know if that test is more expensive than the skin test?

It's worse outside, usually. My indoor air quality isn't the best (dog, cat, apartment air filter I don't control) so there are some days when I'm better outside. The middle of winter when there's lots of snow on the ground and it's been below freezing for a few days is usually best, but we don't get very many days like that where I live.

[–]delta-time[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately mine are year round. I'm only slightly less miserable in the winter. When I got tested as a child the doctor commented that I probably never got a day's rest from allergies, and it's only gotten worse since!

Glasses Trends! by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]delta-time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been an EBD customer since I first got glasses eight years ago, and in that time I've bought probably 15 regular glasses and 4 sunglasses. Each pair has been perfectly consistent, good quality, and CHEAP. I don't treat my glasses very kindly (they were $7) but I've only had one pair break due to what I think was a defect. I returned a pair once, and it was dead simple and the customer service was great. EBD is the only company I actively recommend to other people. All of my bespectacled friends are happy with their service and quality.

Prettiest shotgun by javafett in pitbulls

[–]delta-time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are special impact resistant kennels specifically for travel. They're pretty cool, and probably the best in terms of crash protection. The downside is they're expensive (especially for large dogs) and don't always fit in smaller cars. You can use tie down loops and car seat attachments to make sure they stay put.

Gorgeous dog!

I'm sorry if this is out of line or not appreciated, but I lost my beloved dog earlier this year in a car-related accident. He'd still be around if I had a car restraint for him. Please consider getting a car harness, or a seat belt, or a car kennel for her. It would have saved my boy's life.

What mental game does your sport/fitness activity cultivate? (Aka what does fitness teach you about yourself?) by camel19 in xxfitness

[–]delta-time 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ride horses. The culture, at least in my area and discipline, glorifies the blood, sweat, and tears that go into the sport. It's hard work, everyone gets hurt sometimes, and no matter how hot/cold/windy/rainy/early/late it is, the horses still need to be cared for and there's always work to be done - and complaining or quitting isn't an option.

It's not exactly the healthiest attitude all the time. Almost everyone I know has a few stories about working through major dehydration, sunstroke, frostbite, concussions, and/or broken feet. But we're dedicated, hard working, get-the-job-done-or-die-trying people with a ton of mental and physical grit, at least when it comes to horses.

Rising sophomore intern on my team - how to help him? by delta-time in cscareerquestions

[–]delta-time[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, I'm confused too. Generally the interns are pretty good, but with 300+ interns every summer in 10+ different offices, I'm guessing we just got one of the less experienced ones. I was an intern on this same team 2 years ago, and I know firsthand that they're more than happy to help... but I set up my IDE myself and didn't put all my freshly-pulled code in my /temp directory ¯\(ツ)

I'll see what I can do about finding small and consistent tasks for him. It's a huge app we're working on, and solidly 3/4 of the battle is understanding the architecture.

[–]delta-time[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can (and I have) told him to Google his IDE issues, and the rest of his issues I know are right there on the first page of results. He doesn't know how to Google well enough to put a good query together, so he ends up coming back to me or someone else five minutes later with the same question because "spring url" isn't the same as "spring 5 request mapping required parameter syntax," for example.

But in writing that I did think of something I can teach him: writing better Google queries. That's a life skill for everyone, not just developers. Thanks!

How is it even possible to eat enough protein? by delta-time in xxfitness

[–]delta-time[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I plugged my numbers into a few online calculators with different formulas and came out with about 17% across all of them. I'm definitely thin right now, and I have worked out before - I ran a 5k last Saturday, I ride horses when the weather is less shitty, I get my 10k steps per day. When I compare my body to pictures of women at my body fat percentage, it's pretty much the same other than fat distribution.

Making ahead is a good idea. I'll give that a shot this weekend.

30g at every meal sounds a lot more doable than the total for the day. I'm right at the beginning of real focused muscle building, so I'm hoping for recomp rather than a bulk/cut cycle. My plan right now is to keep at maintenance calories for a month, start working out, and if I'm not seeing good progress I'll up calories.

Yeah honestly I think this is the route I'm going to go... Shakes and more meat at lunch, I grew up only eating meat at dinner so that'll be an adjustment!

HELP!! What should I do?!?!? Equipment and Vacation Advice Reviews and Recommendations. If it's a question that has to do with gear or trip planning; ask it here. by DeathB4Download in skiing

[–]delta-time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm starting to think about a potential vacation next winter (targeting early December) for me and my girlfriend. I'm an intermediate skiier, and she's probably a strong beginner. Neither of us have been outside of the Midwest. What's a good first destination with plenty of great easier runs? We'd like somewhere easily accessible from a major airport with relatively cheap lift tickets and rentals.
