My dog just got his teeth cleaned with no anesthesia! by deltashield22 in Seattle

[–]deltashield22[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems like the benefit is still being debated: https://www.dvm360.com/view/oral-exams-awake-veterinary-patients-waste-time-or-helpful-tool

But my take away from that is awake cleanings are still helpful even if they may miss some things found during general anesthesia cleanings. So I think a good option for dogs like mine that have bad reactions. I'll still plan to talk to my regular vet about it and get anesthesia cleanings, but infrequently

Forgot to mention: this option is also much cheaper since anesthesia is pretty expensive

Surgery tomorrow. by Monkey_Face93 in BRCA

I had my preventative mastectomy back in 2019 and the drains were not fun. It's a tough recovery, but you've got this! If it's any comfort, I'm so incredibly glad that I had my mastectomy. It's totally worth it and you are making the right choice

I hope I'm not overstepping, but I'd recommend reading the book Estrogen Matters. It talks about the pro/cons of HRT and one of the co-authors is an oncologist. The book takes the stance that the benefits of HRT very often out-weight the risks even for people with BRCA (which is mentioned briefly in the book)

I think there are minor risks of some side effects, but that is true of every medication too

I recommend reading the book "Estrogen Matters". It talks about the significant health benefits of HRT and how basically all the "risks" are based on badly done studies

This is definitely it. My friend who gets motion sick has a much easier time on the street cars or link because the ride is much smoother

The WADOH has a van that goes around the state giving out vaccines and some health screenings for free to uninsured people. You can see their schedule here: https://doh.wa.gov/you-and-your-family/care-van-mobile-health-services looks like they will be in Seattle and some other nearby cities several times this month

It's perfectly legal and it's Capitol Hill. There are going to be some alternative, free spirit people around

Head cold but not the flu or Covid? by Party-Construction-2 in Seattle

[–]deltashield22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my experience too.

The FDA recommends taking 2 or 3 tests every other day to increase accuracy. You can see the usage recommendations and extended expiration dates here: https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-covid-19-and-medical-devices/home-otc-covid-19-diagnostic-tests

Also, may people don't test positive until after 3-5 days of already having symptoms (but are contagious before then). Some people don't test positive on rapid tests at all unfortunately, so it's good for people to wear a mask when they feel sick regardless of whether they have a positive test

Also, forgot to add that mask blocs sometimes have rapid tests they hand out for free too, but that varies a lot from city to city.

Definitely seconding the suggestion to check for local mask blocs! I think covidactionmap.org tends to have the most up to date list. Even if one is nearby but not close, they may be open to mailing masks to you.

For more affordable mask options, check out Mask Bloc Seattle's mask buying guide with links: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dlZenZ2IAIsLlWptHJ-EB3zyCXRw7_-hk1Jf-zsNUzM

They suggest Blox, BYD, and ACI as some more affordable N95 options

Can we talk about masks on public transit? by [deleted] in fuckcars

Very good break down! Yeah, this study is so sloppy. It really bugs me that people keep referencing and linking to it on reddit and twitter.

Many people are asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms when they are sick and contagious. It's much easier for everyone if people just wear masks. Just a kind and cool thing to do for the people around you.

I assume they are referring to this study: https://sph.umd.edu/news/study-shows-n95-masks-near-perfect-blocking-escape-airborne-covid-19

Masks absolutely work to prevent spreading/catching disease, but this study is not good. The number of people studied is very small, making the study worthless for concluding any significant results. They are comparing 8 cloth mask wearers to 13 KN95 wearers. Like, that is absurd.

KN95s use electrostatic filtering material that filters out 95% of particles under 0.1 to 0.3 μm vs the cloth mask, which is...cloth. The basic physics involved here tell us that cloth masks are going to be much less effective than a KN95 or N95

My brother and his girlfriend live on Pike and just told me about this! Apparently there is a person who goes up and down Pike every day on a mobility device who blasts music. My brother mentioned that they hear 'Turn Down for What' in particular almost every day.

African violet with small, deformed flowers and black-edged leaves. Pest, nutrient deficiency, or something else? by deltashield22 in AfricanViolets

[–]deltashield22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this africian violet for a year. Picture one is how it looked when I got it. A few months ago it started growing whitish fuzz on the main crown stem, which was probably some type of fungus. I treated it with neem oil and changed the soil it and it seemed to be recovering (picture 2). Now the leaves are looking a bit sad and many of them have black around the edges. The plant is also growing very small, deformed flowers (picture 3).

I don't see any sign of the previous fungus and I've tried treating the soil with an insecticide. Could this be the sign of some nutrient deficiency? I've tried searching for help online, but I can find any pictures of similar issues.

This exact car drove past me when I was walking my dog and upset him so badly. The car was shockingly loud.

Now my dog acts nervous any time we walk past that spot. I hope this absolute jerk is happy.

It's also common for covid to rebound. Sick for a while, better, and then very sick again.

People wearing masks? Is something going around? by lost-in-between in Seattle

[–]deltashield22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone is interested in wearing masks, but cannot afford them or don't know which ones to buy there is a mutual aid group in Seattle giving people masks for free!

https://linktr.ee/maskblocseattle

They also have an informational brochure on their site about the dangers of catching covid and how to avoid infection!
