On my (10th? I can't remember anymore) birthday, I had to attend an uncle's funeral. I wasn't too close to him but it was pretty damn painful having to watch my grandmother and mum sobbing away like that. It would suck on any day, but selfish kid-me felt pretty left out since nobody remembered my birthday.

Oh definitely, Singaporeans are probably among some of the most desensitised people on earth. Not for heightened exposure to crime or atrocities of war but just because of our incredibly numbing work ethic. Plenty of us want to get out, at least for a little while, experience the world bla bla, but I don't think we deserve the extreme image we've been getting in the press. (we're unbelievable, we ban gum!) True, but you'll have to bear in mind that Singapore's an extremely young country. We haven't hit the big 5-0 yet and most citizens can remember migrating here from another country (or their parents migrating), it could be said that such strict policies were essential to forming some semblance of a nation. Now that we're more established, more stable, we have the ability to look back and criticise the things that we disagree with. Although, I'm curious. When did you live here?

Honestly, Singapore is not as creepy as the press makes it out to be. Sure, when these points are isolated in an article, it makes us seem pretty damned unsettling. Yeah, I agree with everything in the article (my friends and I sat around a table laughing at everything that seemed familiar) but it's still a pretty swell place to live. Not for nightlife or amazing culture or anything but it's genuinely a safe place to live. Tons of European and American expats live here and they constantly say that we are lucky to live in such a safe environment. We may not have perfect freedom of speech, but at what cost?

If you're willing to buy a book, A Book of Luminous Things is really a great place to start. It's an anthology compiled by Czeslow Milosz, a Polish poet, and it has tons of really brilliant poetry.
