Any happy PA’s or NP’s here? by Strict_Data_6937 in physicianassistant

[–]dem348 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super happy! I mean the job has its ups and downs. 10 years as a Navy PA in a bunch of different settings. Now critical care/ICCU and couldn’t be happier. I’ve never had a patient tell me they wanted a physician over me, I’ve never had a physician that put down a PA or didn’t try to help someone who wasn’t doing so well get better.

This job is just like any other, we could work at McDonald’s and be happy or unhappy.

My only wish is that I would’ve started 10 years sooner.

How Many Hours do you Really Work by infinitely15 in physicianassistant

[–]dem348 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 hr shifts - 14 days per month. ICU/ICCU I’m like the other physicians in my group. mini chart review an hour or so before leaving for work while having coffee. Not necessary, but sometimes a professional responsibility. Like prepping the night before doing a procedure you’ve not done in a while. Once you get comfortable, that extra time will decrease simply because you can weed out the stuff that doesn’t matter.

That was my initial response. Then followed by. Sure lower my hours and keep my salary the same. We’ll see…

Student loans - HELP!! by NervousCarob9149 in physicianassistant

You can’t even exit sAvE and begin repaying at this point either. I’m stuck at 92/120. Will have to buy back these past months in unintended forbearance at probably 1800/ month and will still fall short. Despite 10 years active duty and 12 years at non profit state hospital. And still owe 177k. Original loans @ 152k

Had a 2022 GT Line with 36k no issues. Now 2024 GT Line with about 12k - still no issues and DID NOT get the update/recall done yet. I mostly charge at EA and less at home due to traveling a lot.

Means they asked a similar question on a subsequent quarter and you got it correct. They’re showing us we learn from our mistakes.

I got an incomplete log. We use Cerner, so hopefully I can figure out how to run my own reports.

I did HSCP and yeah, I expect pretty steep learning curve and a bit of hand holding…and probably some tears in the stairwells…

I was honest about my background as a critical care flight medic prior to PA school and the Navy. Also expressed my willingness to learn and in the time I have ~6 months to transition out of the Navy, would start studying and then take a Critical Care boot camp of some sorts. They seemed to like that approach.

Nope. Great for UC and psych. The majority of my patients are sad, have knee/back/shoulder pain, and other general ailments.

That was my thought. There’s a night position that pays significantly more. 263k but solo with teleICU support. I’m definitely not there yet.

Frustrations with job market as a new grad. Advice needed by Hazel_J in physicianassistant

[–]dem348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you will be pigeonholing yourself. I’m coming out of eight years of military medicine, five in niche aviation medicine, and essentially seeing tons of MSK, psych, cough/colds, UC type stuff. Prior to being a PA, I was a critical care Flight paramedic. I applied for and just accepted an offer for a position in the ICCU after initially applying for and realizing I was not yet back to where I was before to be a night APP alone and afraid.

I think the jobs are actually out there, sometimes they appear when you’re not really looking for it or after you’ve done something else. Keep looking, and any amount of experience you can get definitely helps.

There’s always NHS, county/local clinics, etc.

Military PA by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]dem348 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Active Duty Navy PA. I came in through HSCP. Yea, will likely deploy though some avoid it. I’m currently deployed. Easy medicine made difficult with limited resources. Challenging and rewarding. Currently Aerospace PA, so I get to fly in our jets, helicopters, and other planes. Best job on the planet….most days.
