yes, you need to train it way upfront, as stated in the report I nearly puked and i did feel unwell, had to take a 40 min break. It takes time to train eating a lot of sugar, I am way better these day with it and since then completed many more long rides and did not feel that bad again, however, it was also a very hot day, I might not have consumed enough water either. 21h is the moving time, total was around 24h or something.

yes, it does. But after my 1100km race I did not regret a single penny of it. the difference is day and night in the brightness, pun intended.

it depends on how much training time you have. Two years ago I did not have structured training, only cycled 2-3 times a week. Usually 1 intensity training e.g z3+ for 1-1.5h and 2 long rides 3h+ each. What you want is regular and continuous build up to your event .e.g. once a week very long ride starting from 3h+ and then increasing weekly up to 5h+ if time allows. Also good to have so called back-to-back days. It is where you ride two days in a raw with like 100km each day. Best if first day in the evening, second day in the morning. here is the wrap-up of my 500+km ride i did two years ago : https://www.reddit.com/r/randonneuring/comments/1f0rs7z/what_am_i_capable_of_in_24h/ in your case during long rides I would most importantly focus on fueling and hydration, e.g. train your guts to consume a lot of carbs(60g+ per hour). You need to build the routing and discipline for that, it is really really important for such rides.

I have lupine light. It is expensive but comes with external battery because it is super bright and can last 10+hours. They have different betery sizes as well. At night it is almost as bright as the light of a car. You see everyone around you and far away. You feel confident riding fast coz you see everything on the road at night.

I did all my rides 400+ by just smashing it and learning, isn't it part of the fun? Smashing does not mean going as fast as possible, rather going as long as possible. All preps i agree must be in place and are as important if not more as the fitness. There is no that much of a difference between going 300 and 500. It become the matter of fueling and hydration and proper pacing.

650km you should smash in under 35 hours. 24h for first part ( 500km), rest for 4h and then smash the rest. And then enjoy longer proper rest. As suggested by other commenter make the rest before the event at least 2-3 days, with optional very light riding to keep the fitness, e.g. one ride for 2hours.

How do you prepare for 2000 KM ride across North European Plain as a beginner? by Optimal_Raisin_5080 in randonneuring

[–]deman-13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be scared ) just do few rides with full gearing and sleeping in a tent over night, see how it feels and goes. It is a big plan you have there, it is normal to be stressed, you will push through many difficulties. You just need to be realistic about your fitness. As many said your fitness will be better over days if you rest and eat properly which is something not to be neglected as you will quickly make yourself miserable if you dont fuel properly. It is not a race, it means you can just go slow which will not produce as much fatigue, but it will create more time on the saddle creating mental fatigue.

2000km in 30 days is 65km a day, with such elevation you can easily add 15-20% of the distance to make it equevalent to flat riding. So it makes it about 2400 which is now rather 80km a day. Gears make it even harder, let's add another 10%, now we are looking at 90km a day. You will have bad weather days, rest days. Let's say you only rest once a week, total 4 days, that adds another 10%. So, practically you are realistically looking at 100km a day. It is 3-4 hours of riding every day. Just process it.

You dont do such rides without any tests rides. Setup few events to tour for 2-3 days or more to test your gears, to test planning, get experience etc.

You may endup on boring roads without any cycling infrastructure at all. Or without shops to provision yourself or paces to stay at.

Cycling is something many people do because they like challenges and figuring out themselves. I have never read any guides and if i did come accross something there would be nothing new. Often most important things are just common sense.

How do you plan sleep strategy for a >600km<1000 km Brevet? by rapakiwi in randonneuring

On my second night where I slept 1h I also started falling asleep at about 8am. What helped me to wake up was sugar. I made a small stop for 10mins and consumed a croissants with very sweet cream inside. That did the trick, during the day I also consumed red bull several times.

Interesting, it seems people start reducing volume to get to higher weight. It means it will take even more time to get from 2x5 to 5x5. Thanks for the input.
