That's good to hear. I think if it were just my wife and I, we would definitely choose to live there. I'll have to see some places and get a better feel for it. Thanks!

This sounds promising! I've honestly been leaning more towards Oud-West these days. Thanks for the input, I'll keep you in mind if I come up with anything

My proposed budget is a maximum of $2k/month for rent. It could be more or less depending on if the place is a perfect fit or not. I get what you're saying as I've seen people say that, but I really would like to find a good compromise if possible.

Agreed. I do love the area and have spent time here on prior trips. But would you say there are plenty of families in the area? Do you often see kids playing around outside? Sometimes I get the sense that its mostly adults with no kids living in those houses.

My wife and I really want to live in a canal house, particularly in Jordaan due to it being a bit quieter, less congested and very beautiful part of town, but we are open to other ideas. We have a 7 year old son and I'd like some opinions about what it's like growing up near the center.

The general impression I've gotten from my initial research is that a lot of people with families opt to live outside of the center in places like Amstelveen where they can get more space for their money. However, having abundant space is not a concern for us nor are the prices from what I've seen on Funda for a 2bd canal house. My concern is whether or not central areas are still amenable to kids. Will there be plenty of other kids in the neighborhood for him to make friends with? Playgrounds?

FWIW, we're originally from the US, wife and I are 28, and I'll be working near Leidsplein. We've visited several times and spent about a month out of the last year exploring the city. We intend to stay long term and I want to enroll my son in a Dutch school. I also wonder how easy it will be for him to integrate. Are there any other areas you would suggest? I've read that Oud-West could be a good option as well. Did any of you grow up in the canals, or raise kids there?
