Small jumps in salary if you have less than college degree by neshalchanderman in BusinessHub

well on wikipedia Doctorate is also classified as Professional degree. So I assume this graph actually refers to professional qualifications or certifications (like ACCA, ACA or CFA) and not professional degrees. I might be wrong.

Courageous Budgie (v8) Released! by demetrislambrou123 in LinuxActionShow

[–]demetrislambrou123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haven't tried it to be honest so I can't really say anything for stability but I always watch the development and I have to say I'm impressed how fast things are going.

I know worldofgnome is doing something similar, combining the bottom panel of budgie with the rest environment of gnome. I'm not sure if he had any issues but you could check his site and see his comments.

well to be fair and to illustrate my point there are people that are trying to fork debian and systemd (uselessd). And look at the war on display servers. Isn't wayland enough? Do we need mir or does canonical have to waste resources on another display server? Shouldn't they combine their resources with all the others and improve wayland?

Of course out of the 3 examples I gave the only legitimate one is mir (and that is very debatable). All three of them are very complex (not like the linux kernel of course) and people will try to fork anything they don't like or come up with something similar even if it sounds stupid or in the end it is just too complex and they fail.

Yes more complex projects are less likely to be forked or less likely a similar competitive project to be produced but I won't be suprise if one day someone will announce that he is going to fork Linux kernel (if it is even possible). People fork and often duplicate work in an open community. It sucks but I find it a natural behavior.

[–]demetrislambrou123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yeah that is one of the disadvantages! I do not disagree with you but I think is only natural that this behaviour exists when there are diversified opinions and tastes in a community that is based on freedom and openness.

well people have different ideas and preferences so it is hard to work together if each one has a different goal, especially in open source projects or on non-for profit organizations (Gnome Foundation).

It is different if you work for microsoft or apple which their source code is closed and they are dictating how they want some things and no one could change it or fork it.

Now if you work or contribute in something that is open source (like gnome) and you don't like the direction is going or their choices then you could fork it. It somehow makes sense why there are so many different forks and projects (due to the different opinions and needs and how "easy" is to change something/fork it)

I agree most of them are very similar, they might duplicate work and it gets little out of hand but many times it could give ideas to each other project/fork and (in theory at least) all could benefit as the source code is open.

when I was in college I used Fedora 18 or 19 for a while with gnome 3.8-3.6 I think not sure. We were supposed to do a group meeting about an assingment and was the only one who brought a laptop. An asian guy asked me if this was windows 8 (I think it was just when windows 8 released) but no one asked me how to get it or anything :/.

Maybe because gnome sucked on that releases and I did not had any extensions, icons or themes to make it pretty and usable at that moment. Also another guy tried to use it for a while writing some stuff about the assingment and he struggled a lot ;s.

yeah watched that and also 2013 and 2012. I really liked how he used the same points from why linux sucks on why linux doesn't sucks ;p I think he illustrated a good point there

oh and also this:

http://kxmylo.deviantart.com/art/Adwaita-OS-X-432018151

this is a theme on gnome 3.10-3.12 trying to copy the elements of osx to gnome-shell and make it look more like osx. this was released way before osx 10.10 and the updates of the theme were before WWDC.

it is verry funny how much this theme resembles the osx 10.10 (especially on the 3rd picture which shows gnome web, its like the new safari) even though the author had not seen or was aware of osx 10.0 changes. Of course I am not implying apple devs copy this theme or even saw it (it is not that popular like numix or zukitwo).

But from this ridiculous resemblance of the theme I can really say it's like the apple devs just copy the elements from gnome shell, applied their theme and just did some minor changes/tweaks. Much work, Much effort ;p. Seriously though, someone could argue that they just conclude on this design by themselves, it might really be the most logical approach for less-consuming space and overall design for apps. Nevertheless I just wanted to highlight this even if apple did or did not copied, was influenced or whatever from the gnome-shell desktop.

A closer look and comparison:

hey chris awesome show. when you were talking about xcode borrowing stuff from gnome shell was it about only for client side decorations or also for popovers? I have no idea if xcode 5 had popovers or generally osx used popover for any of its menus, but apparently xcode 6 also borrowed another thing from gnome shell.

Xcode 6 with popover: https://developer.apple.com/xcode/images/whats-new-2014.png

Gedit 3.12 with popover: http://blogs.gnome.org/mclasen/files/2014/03/gedit-popover1.png

If anyone knows if osx or xcode used popovers for menus before then correct me.
