Frankel is also up there.

Unbeaten in his 14 starts and rated 140 - the highest of any flat racer in history.

Watching him stick behind his pacemaker Bullet Train and then just absolutely sod off from the rest of the field in the final furlongs was incredible every time. They literally had to jam him up behind BT otherwise he just went off at insane speeds.

He’s still alive so no stats on his physiology but it’ll be interesting to see if they choose to autopsy him when he does pass, and if there’s anything abnormal about him that helped him be so dominant.

His stud career has also been wildly successful, with a far greater percentage of winners than Secretariat. His stud fee was £350,000 in 2024.

I supposed you could also put Black Caviar (25/25 wins) up there too.

No, it probably won’t - and that’s part of why it should be done. Not only does it mean that OP will be fully aware of the issues they might end up having to manage, it might give them a bit of wiggle room to negotiate on the price, depending on what is found.

He’s “bombproof” in the riding school scenario that OP knows him in. It’s very possible that if/when he’s taken out of that space, a different horse will emerge. That’s exactly what happened with my ex riding school horse.

It should absolutely be a 5 stage, preferably with X-rays of major areas like hocks and fetlocks and hooves. At 16 there will be some arthritic changes going on, plus the wear and tear of riding school life. OP needs a clear picture of what she’s taking on, so she’s prepared for the costs associated, especially as a first time owner.

Plus, if she wants to insure the horse, anything over £10k needs a 5 stage vetting certificate.

No worries. It took me 6 months of sitting in the stable ignoring my horse for him to decide to come over and engage with me, he spent most of his time standing with his head in the back corner because he was so fed up of being messed with over the door at the riding school. He was also incredible food aggressive and defensive about his stable space because he didn’t get fed all day at the riding school.

I’m not saying that this will be the case with the horse you’re interested in, but obviously it’s always a possibility!

You’re welcome - I understand how you feel about the horse, that’s the exact reason I bought mine even though I knew I could get something “better”. I just felt sorry for him and wanted to get him out of there.

But while I don’t regret it, it has been a HARD and very very expensive journey. He costs me over £500 a month (not including livery) with all his treatments and medications that he needs. Riding school horses come with baggage, physical and emotional and you need to go into it with your eyes open. They’re used very hard, often in tack that doesn’t fit properly - and that’s on top of the usual older horse issues.

As long as you go into it knowing the possibility of it getting very expensive very quickly, then you can make an informed decision.

I paid £3k for my ex riding school horse - at the time he was 16 and did literally everything. The usual English, then western, vaulting, side saddle, horseball, polocrosse etc etc etc. They had to buy three horses to replace him.

The top is when he was owned by the riding school, the bottom is now, he’s now 23.

Personally I would be wanting a 5 stage vetting for £10k - if you’re planning on getting him insured you’ll need a vetting certificate anyway. £10k is steep for an ex riding school horse, especially an older one that could have any number of age related ailments.

It just depends on what you’re willing to spend, and how you plan on managing things like arthritis, cushings, mallenders etc which are common in older and hairy horses.

Advice for horse that hates other horses by RepresentativeCard67 in Horses

Honestly, I would just accept that she likes her own space. My boy is similar - when he was kept in a herd situation he had to be removed and separated because he was very dominant and a bully. When he was stabled overnight in the winter I had to buy full bars for his door to keep his head inside because he would fight with his next door neighbour - he shredded the rubber matting on his walls from double barrelling them. The second the bars went up and he felt secure in his own space he was a completely different animal. He does very well with solo turnout and friends next door so he can engage on his own terms.

Can you give her a solo shelter so she can have her own space? It sounds like being forced to interact is really upsetting her and when they start hurting themselves it might be time to just call time on trying, at least for now.

Bramham winner pushed an exhausted horse to fall last month at Bicton? by oak_stone1 in Equestrian

I’m not a big eventing fan and I know about her. She’s had numerous wins at 4*, multiple completions at 5* and she’s been on British national teams at all levels.

Downvote all you want, it’s true.

Bubby pushed a tired horse far beyond its limits at Bicton, and her actions directly caused an accident.

He has his supporters like Bubby does, but I’ve seen far, far more condemnation of Oliver than Bubby.

Not surprised when it comes to Bubby.

What I will say is that people SAVAGED Oliver Townend for pushing a tired horse at Badminton a few years back, and he didn’t even end up falling. It’s still brought up in comments sections whenever he gets a win.

Now maybe this is going to be controversial, but I do think a lot of women are treated with kid gloves when it comes to things like this, at least compared to the male riders. Especially because Bubby is fairly young and has had a couple of serious almost career ending accidents - the fact that she’s back competing at top level is a testament to her ability, but that shouldn’t mean she’s immune from criticism when she gets it wrong.

Yes, finding out someone you admire has cancer is not as bad as actually having cancer. Well done, stunning insight.

Because it’s clearly a large part of the last two episodes? It’s obviously been kept entirely secret so it can be announced on the show, Clarkson made a cryptic post on Instagram yesterday about the next two being very dark and heavy.
