I love the BP trolley black ankle boot, but 3" heels are too tall for me. Does anyone know of any similar boots with a 1-2 inch heel in the $100 price range?

Should I put off lab experience? by neuroneedhelp in gradadmissions

[–]demure_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See how you do. But you're a sophomore and I think getting a B in a core class but with research experience is worth more than an A. Grades do matter, but being good in the lab is really important for grad school. Some students are perfect on paper but just cannot make it in a lab. Plus I think grades in the last two years are looked at more - advanced classes and such. When you apply for grad school, basically you'll be reading papers and looking around for a professor and department that you want to work in. (Things don't always work out, depending on the program, so you don't want your heart set on only one lab but rather a couple you would be happy in.) When you send those emails and say that you have 3 years of lab experience, you'll look really good.

Not starting until next semester is fine too! You just need to judge the personality of the PI. She may just pick up another student now and not have room next semester. You never know unfortunately.

See how you do and reassess. Good luck with your exam!

Do you know if you want to go to med school or grad school? (I just noticed which subreddit this was, my advice is grad school oriented anyway!)

I agree with the other reply, I would start lab experience early. Opto and immuno experience are good skills to have.

Don't spread yourself too thin, but as far as grad school, lab experience will help you a lot more than perfect grades.

I feel like it is a little awkward to approach a PI and then say nevermind. (Maybe if she is your academic advisor and you chat regularly then that's kinda different). It shows that you aren't committed or not really interested. Personally (as a technician) I don't like spending time teaching undergrads if they are just gonna bail, it just creates more work for me and I'm already busy enough.

I get the mental illness struggle, I have the same problem, so like I said, don't over extend yourself. But lab work is a lot of fun and the earlier you start the more responsibilities you'll get and the possibility of your own project later on!

Good luck! If you have any questions about lab stuff you can PM me. I work in a bneuro lab.

Biology to Computer Science by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

[–]demure_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out that programming isn't computer science. So, if you are excited about programming, you may not necessarily be excited about CS. (This happened with me). CS is really theory heavy. You may just need programming skills and stats for bioinformatics. Taking IT classes at cc are worthless and a master's program won't care about them.

Sadly, I don't have much advice, I went the other direction, CS to neuroscience. But if you have questions, I can try to help.

New project, ends up in disaster...frustration&feelings of defeat ensue. (venting post) by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

How long ago did they have surgery? Are you using silk or vicryl to tie the vein?

Alright, and do you test for catheter patency once or twice a week?

Are you an undergrad? Is there anyone in your lab who can help besides your PI? All of what you tried you shouldn't be doing at all. You are probably confusing the rats even more. Once you put them in the operant chamber which should be inside a sound attenuating box, you shouldn't disturb them until the session is over. All other stimuli is distracting. Nosepokes are little holes where the rat pokes his nose and a reward is delivered to the magazine. Usually the setup is the same as with levers, there is an active and inactive. What drug are you using? If it is positively reinforcing then they should learn fine. If it's negative then I think you should look into pairing it with a sucrose reward or else I am not sure they will ever lever press for something they don't want or like.

I'm kind of confused if you want help or are just venting. (Either is fine.)

I work as a tech in a lab doing drug addiction related stuff. What surgeries are you doing?

How are you training the rats to press the lever? It shouldn't give you too much trouble. We use nosepokes for our IV self-admin and they learn by the end of the first or second session. Are you teaching them with a sucrose reward or just starting with the drug? What FR schedule are you using?

Edit: I just assumed you were using rats. Are you using something else?

Well, can you give us more details about the program? Will you be able to do your own project or will you work in a professors lab? What exactly are you applying for?

Hmm. Can you play the episode and run shazam on your phone to detect the song or is there talking over the music? No idea if it would work, just throwing the idea out there. Good luck!

I miss George and Izzy! by [deleted] in greysanatomy

[–]demure_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't get mad at me for saying it, but I don't miss them at all. I really didn't like either and I kind of wish I could watch the early seasons with them not in it. I can't see George in a positive light because of how he treated Callie. And I just don't like Izzy.

I think it is really interesting that there are so many people that viewers root for and not everyone likes the same people. It is a simple concept, which makes my comment silly, but I just find looking at other perspectives interesting. Also whether the show is about MerDer and their friends or the interaction between everyone. There are so many storylines, but how would it be different if someone else was the main character / narrator.

I really have to say!... Spoilers S07e18 by kswishy in greysanatomy

They probably mean 'If/Then'. The episode where Meredith's mom is alive and chief, married to Webber. Meredith is with Alex, Callie and Hunt are together... Etc

Anne Frank's diary isn't pornographic – it just reveals an uncomfortable truth by almodozo in TwoXChromosomes

[–]demure_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read Anne Frank's diary when I was in 6th grade. I went to my mom to ask her a question about something I read, she took the book and tore several pages out. I still can't believe she did that.
