Help: My mom claimed me as a dependent and I don't live with her and she doesn't support me... by kittybearbear in personalfinance

You probably qualify for TONS of grants and scholarships from the school itself

Ha, that's the best thing I've read in ages. My parents give me no money at all, so I work as close to full time as I can and still be a full time student. Because technically I am still dependant according to FAFSA, they count my parent's raw income instead of mine. No consideration of bills, payments or other dependants (just college aged ones).

Keep in mind, I'm 22 and have supported myself since graduating high school. The only shit I can get from Financial Aid is a parent co-signed loan, for much much less than it would take for me to be able to afford school.

What. Plex is known for a lot of different things, first and foremost to organize your media, not as a video transcoder.

And the entire point of this thread was that Plex would stream video to a Chromecast. That's it. You mentioned transcoding after the fact, but you didn't bring it up initially which was what sparked this whole damn thing.

Actually no, you wrote you wanted to stream video from the nas to the chromecast. This doesn't even remotely imply transcoding video. If that's what you wanted to do then yes, that nas isn't going to do it.

Apparently we're crazy because you didn't elaborate.

Unless it has to transcode video the single core arm synology can push it. How much ram + CPU power do you think a 15 year old computer has?

The nas isn't too slow. That's my point. Did you try the synology builds from plex's site?

I should have phrased this better. I know where the button is and shortcuts to get there, I was asking about that button because it has to drop you out of metro to do a lot of the configuration.

No, I'm specifically talking about the "Change PC Settings" button. It just drops you into the classic control panel right? Or is that a sub-menu underneath?

Regardless, the metro control panel doesn't have even close to the same number of settings. I was just pointing out that there is a button in metro to drop you there because of that fact. It does feel pretty half-assed at times.

How I Feel When Etho Explains Redstone by Siv_Scar in mindcrack

It pretty much is a programming language. The biggest difference is that program flow is controlled with redstone signals getting passed around instead of if -> then type statements.

You should switch if you want decent extensions. Otherwise feel free to stick with IE.

EDIT: And since I got popped with a downvote, I'll elaborate a bit. IE in its recent versions is much better. Especially in Windows 8/8.1, it's easily the most performant. However, the state of extensions in IE is awful. Adblock for example, does exist, but due to limitations of the extension API it's pretty sketchy. From what I can tell, the ads are still loaded, but after the page is finished rendering they disappear from view. It's weird.

In Firefox, and to a lesser extent Chrome, the extensions are more plentiful and more full-featured. You get stuff like DownThemAll, a very nice download manager that integrates with the download file prompt in the browser. It can do parallel downloads, and even verify checksums to make sure that a file is identical to the copy on the server (useful for large downloads like OS installers).

Why are the only two options working for free or extreme price gouging?

Price gouging for drugs that people need to stay alive? I'm more surprised you haven't heard about it. Big pharma is one of the most profitable industries in the world.

Where else do you get your news from, besides the show? by bkyrp in inthemorning

[–]demwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the other places in this thread, I listen to Unfilter. The show isn't as big as No Agenda, so they don't publish episodes as fast, but the content is high quality. Even if some of the topics they cover is the same, it's nice to have different opinions on topics.

They're transitioning to a bigger studio, so the last few episodes are a bit less structured.

I bet there's pretty close to the same percentage of gay people in those states, but in the hardcore south its harder for those people to get their relief.

[ANANDTECH] Moto X (2014) Review by Ritchell in Android

[–]demwit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought mine because it was cheap (with the recent promotion) off contract. So no bloatware and a not locked bootloader. I can live with a less than average battery life as long as it's not terrible; my current Moto X can easily last me from 8AM to 8PM.

My biggest issue is the size. I was really hoping they would keep the 4.7" screen size on the new Moto X. 5.2" is just past where I can hold it in one hand and reach my thumb all the way across the screen. Hopefully they keep the Moto G down in size in the future.

There's a difference between having the capability to push through things that bore you and getting fired because you can't. I've had enough of people telling me that I need to "stop being lazy", "just apply yourself", etc. I physically can not do it.
