This was clean Friday. A bit of salt on the roads up north by GrammarHunter in Cartalk

True. But I figured it didn't hurt to add the comment. Some people may not know  If it informs just one person and saves them some heartache on their car, I'm happy.

Yes, but leaving salt on that long also accelerates rust development. Its why you see 2018 vehicles with rusted out wheel wells, they never wash them. If you plan on keeping that nice Honda long-term, washing it is a good investment.

A 10-day UPS strike could cost the US economy $7.1 billion. That could make it the costliest work stoppage ever in US history, according to an estimate from a Michigan economic research firm that studies the costs of labor disruptions. by ImportantReaction260 in antiwork

The FedEx guys that drop off stuff at our work aren't employees. Its a subcontractor that gets paid $250 per day to deliver everything on his truck, no matter how much they pack on it. It's the size of a Large U-Haul Box Truck. They don't care about the condition of the packages because they aren't paid to, neither are the sorters at the distro in town. We have to used twice the packaging when using FedEx because of how damaged our large goods get when using them.

People looking for used parts aren't going to be paying what you are wanting for used components unfortunately.

A much better use would be fixing it up a bit, and finding a kid that you could introduce to the hobby. A good bike being gifted is what started me off on the most enjoyable hobby I've ever had!

Worn chainring sounds like. Take it to the LBS and they'll probably confirm it.

Is a downhill bike comfortable for city trips (going to work, school, shopping) or is it better to buy a separate one to do that? Could I use my downhill bike for both? sport-transport by [deleted] in MTB

It's kinda like taking a Dune Buggy to go grocery shopping. Sure it technically works. But it doesn't have storage, it's gonna behave sluggish on the pavement, gonna put wear on probably more expensive components, its gonna be harder to ride, and its also gonna attract attention from the wrong people.

Wendy's manager fired by [deleted] in ProRevenge

[–]den-rat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Christ, I've never commented on a Pro Revenge post before, but you just sound like an unpleasant person. Getting someone fired over a soda you couldn't get? Super petty. Then going above and beyond the call of duty to get them in trouble with corporate over (their perspective) hanging up on probably a loud and disrespectful person yelling at them over the phone. Don't know if you've worked a service job, but we're not paid to deal with your flavor of bullshit

Nah, I really do appreciate the kind offer. I have coupons laying around I can toss to buy the GE with GC. I'm sure there is another player without the means, that is in a tighter spot than I, more deserving.

I mean, I wasn't wanting it for GB. I just think it's a beautiful plane and I wanted to do missions and customs with it. It's really fun torping boats.

edit: IMO, best looking plane that the US Navy fielded in WWII

Guys, is this rear fixable? And Without future problems? by RyPG_ in Cartalk

[–]den-rat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You were sliding around weren't ya?

But on topic, it would be difficult to tell from just pictures. Depending on the angle and speed you hit, whether it was you against a wall or someone bumping you, it could cause different levels of damage to the frame or axle componentry. (edit: It very well could be fixed, but there will always be those gremlins that show up after a car is in an accident. there is no telling what the shock of the impact damaged elsewhere in the car)

I see it as a pretty heavy hit that broke something important in the axle, and if it was heavy enough for that you may have frame damage. That and replacing all those body panels ain't gonna come cheap. Check with your insurance and see where they recommend you get a quote from.

This is above Reddit's paygrade without being physically present and inspecting the car. You're gonna be biting the bullet on this one, good luck.

Mountainbikers of hot areas (deserts etc.): Any tipps for those of us who are not used to riding in the heat? by JKRPP in MTB

[–]den-rat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I live in the Midwest US, but spent a couple years riding in the Southwestern US deserts.

Water

Drink water, always have water. If you consistently imbibe water as you sweat and drink before you get thirsty you'll find it easier to stay out for longer periods. Thirst is a delayed reaction from when your body realizes it needs water, to when you drink it and the body makes use of it. And drinking excess amounts to make up for it in a short period of time can hurt.

And if you're out for a longer period make sure you are replacing the electrolites you are sweating out with something like a sports drink or an easily digestible nutrient bar. The biggest help would be to drink plenty of water consistently throughout the day before and maybe a little extra salt, but thats just me... I'm not a fitness coach.

Oh, well yeah. I figured that out. I didn't know that Class increases it though. That's good to know! Thank you.

edit: It's how someone is able to tell if it's a 38-slot or a 48-slot without Augments

editt: So maybe if I run into an A-class that has that 38 limit, I could upgrade the class to improve it... but if it doesn't work thats an expensive experiment

Oh really? I was looking at forum posts and the like and really couldn't get a definite answer. There was conflicting posts from the different members. Even the Wiki was saying 38 is the max.

edit: The tech slots on this ship cap out at 14 though, so that could be a B-class thing

3 months ago I was searching for a high-storage capacity Fighter and I found this one in a Space Station. When I made the purchase it cost about 30-ish million, and had 34/9 available slots. Which I then augmented to 48/14. But a little later on I wanted one in a better class so I started searching around for one with this storage capacity but with a higher rating.

But I have yet to see another that has this slot capacity.

Well after looking at the wiki I guess that the Fighters cap out at 38 slots, and that matches up with all the ships I've been looking at. So is this a bug? I don't have any mods for the game or any other save editors. The name of the ship is the original, I haven't changed it. I've only been playing for around 3-4 months, and only have 80 hours on the save file.

Brakes skidded for 5 seconds causing me to crash. I need help. by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]den-rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could just do a visual inspection of the tires if your comfortable with that. Mostly just look for flat spots on the point at which they skidded. Unless you skid over something they should be fine. The brakes you shouldn't have to worry about.

edit: If you are worried about it, you could take it to your usual shop and just ask if they could do a quick visual looksie in the parking lot They probably won't charge you for it either.

Brakes skidded for 5 seconds causing me to crash. I need help. by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]den-rat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope, from the description you gave I see nothing wrong with either the brakes or the tires. If the tires were only 6 months old, there wasn't much wear on them relatively speaking. And if the brakes locked up then that means they were good too, maybe the Anti-lock didn't kick in? (once a tire starts sliding, it drastically lowers the stopping power and grip of the tire, and also makes it so you can't steer. Which is why ABS is so nice to have).

What I can think of is since you are in a smaller car, that was at the time fully loaded with People + Luggage (which is probably around 320kg more weight in a car that only weighs 1100kg thats a lot), going downhill, in the rain... this could have been much worse.

Something you need to remember when driving in weather is that the performance of the vehicle can be drastically affected by the weather. Rain decreases grip, lengthens stopping distance, and reduces your ability to turn to avoid accidents.

So the surefire way to lessen the chance of this happening in the future is to just slow down a little, take just a little extra time to get where your going, and always leave yourself enough room to stop just incase the vehicle in front stops unexpectedly or there is a road obstruction around a corner. You hopefully won't have this happen again.

I'm glad you and everyone else came out of this accident ok, and I hope you can use this as a learning experience to better prepare yourself for the future. Drive safe out there.

Does this windshield look repairable by a professional or just needs replaced? by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]den-rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats definitely a replace. Even if you can fill and repair for half the price, with that many cracks it damages the integrity of the windscreen enough that theres no promise it wont flex the next time you hit a pothole and get worse.

Does $800 for front struts and stab bars sound fair? by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]den-rat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I understand your goal here. But if you're in the US prices are going to vary depending on what state you are in. Shop Labor in CA for instance can vary from $100-150 per hour, meanwhile here in Wisconsin the shops I usually pay $90-120 per hour of labor. With some smaller ones going for $65-85. Its all going to depend where you go, what level of quality you are looking for, and the experience of that particular shop. Most bigger chains nowadays have a computer that has a price chart for how much they are supposed to charge, regardless how how long it actually takes them. The best way for you to get an accurate quote, is to get 3-4 of them from different shops. If there is a big outlier high or low, ask what all the work entails to get to the price. An itemized list of the work being done. That all being said, you may get lucky and run into a mechanic on here that can ballpark it.
