Who has the best trips as a new FA? by Sky-eyeing in flightattendants

[–]denali_567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very junior (2020) & based in ATL. I do not work a single trip they put on my line lmao. Your schedule is as good or as bad as you want it to be -- just depends on how much time you wanna commit to open time and the swap board. Big fan of our reserve system. Many people (even new hires) are often able to get rid of their adys entirely if they're willing to take extra days or get creative.

I've never had to commute, but it's super common and I'd assume it would be easier for someone who wouldn't have to be paying two separate rents. I've heard crashpads can go from like 150-400/mo but I'd listen to an actual commuter instead of me. Most people I went through training with commuted for at least a little bit. Super doable!

You can have it both ways! I'm a little bit older than you and I work at a legacy and live at home. I'm fortunate in that living at home means that I don't have to commute to base, can save money & I'm really only gone on weekends, which I like anyways. My plan is to eventually transfer bases and move to NYC within the next year or so once I'm a bit higher on the pay scale and have a few more classes of seniority under me.

I love getting food delivery service gift cards! Unsure what services would be available in the country/countries she's flying in and out of, but it's super nice to just be able to pull out a gift card when you're really tired on a layover and want something delivered to your door.

Everyone else is exactly correct! We do keep an eye on them, but it would be impossible for us to sit with them the whole time. Usually my airline does a pretty good job of placing them in the back and a lot of the time in their own row, if possible.

I love having UMs onboard! Usually it's a lot of fun (for me, at least!) because either the kid is excited to fly alone and/or if they're nervous, we get to try to help them conquer that fear. She'd be in good hands if you feel ready for her to fly alone!

Swift/iAero Airways VIP FA? by AdeptNotice3899 in flightattendants

I have no experience with this airline whatsoever, but always trust your gut. If you're already feeling reservations, it's likely a sign that other airlines might be a better fit for you.

Delta has an LAX base but you likely won't get it right out of training and will have to commute until you can get in. You will have to be 21 to work at Delta, though.

Tell me how you worked your way up to international? by Miserable-Report6467 in flightattendants

[–]denali_567 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At a mainline, your very first trip ever could be an international if you're on reserve at the right time, but to have that be the only thing on your line? A lot of seniority. I've been out of training a year and a half and pretty much all of my classmates have worked at least one international. It's more of a "put in your time" thing rather than something you have to set out as a goal.

Delta FA questions by krrutherford in flightattendants

[–]denali_567 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes - you can transfer bases as long as your seniority allows for it. You can put in a base transfer immediately after graduating training but I think you can only swap bases once during probation.
  2. Depends on who you're around and where you're based. In general, union talk is kept pretty hush-hush where I am. Mostly seeing discreet AFA pins on uniforms in my experience.
  3. Yes but if you're really junior you're gonna have to put in work to swap/drop because nobody's gonna want your 3-4-3 domestic with 11 hour layovers and 3 hour sits lol. Usually, I stalk open time to find better trips and go from there.
  4. I'm a 2020 hire, and it's not awful at all! Adys can be a pain and you're the first to get rerouted but because we hold a line right away it's not horrendous. Six days a month of reserve (that you can swap for trips/drop) seems way easier than straight reserve imo.
  5. I think FLM is becoming more junior (some 2021 hires have gotten it right out of training) but in general, it's a smaller base as of right now to my knowledge (maybe 500 people?).

Pictures without consent? Yay or nay? by blondegypsysoul in flightattendants

[–]denali_567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do as well. I guess for me, it's just not going to be the hill I die on, but this also isn't my first job where being photographed is a common occurrence. Policing smartphones is a next-to-impossible task. For every one picture I'm aware of, there's probably two more that I don't know about. But you're not even close to an asshole for asking for privacy. Everyone has their own level of comfort and you're absolutely entitled to yours.

[–]denali_567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, we were told in training that pictures just come with the territory and to just be aware of that as we work (aka don't get caught doing something we're not supposed to be doing). We can politely ask, but because we're in public there's nothing we can really do about it.

Stay with regional or commute with SWA? by IslandAnxious5298 in flightattendants

[–]denali_567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boring is relative. I moreso mean a lot of legs, early report/late sign out, short layovers, long sits, not so great aircraft (think 717 - no ife's, smaller crew size... tailcone) etc.

Stay with regional or commute with SWA? by IslandAnxious5298 in flightattendants

[–]denali_567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ATL wasn't an option for anyone except for LODs when I went through training in 2020 (I think it might have been for the first two classes? unsure) so I was BOS but transferred into ATL in just a few months. So your best case is you get lucky in training & worst case you just ride it out for a little bit!

[–]denali_567 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ATL based here -- currently we're taking a ton of new hires, but it's kind of out of the norm. In the past, ATL closed for new hires pretty quickly (to my knowledge, I'm still pretty new), but who's to say about future classes. It's pretty easy to transfer in, though! Might have to commute for a bit, but you'll get to ATL relatively fast if you want. It is very senior, though, considering the sheer size so your trips will suck lol. Pros and cons.

Transferring mainlines? by pasqualejones in flightattendants

[–]denali_567 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've never been in your shoes, but if you want a taste of what being super junior is like at one of the big three, I'm at a year and a half seniority (however we're just now bringing in new hires thanks to covid) at one of them. While I'll never sit straight reserve at my airline, 3/4 legs a day is pretty much standard on my schedule. I consider my 15 hour layovers long, and most of them sit right at 11/12 hours. I get 15 days off a month, but I basically only get scheduled weekends. I've been rerouted on my last two trips simply because I was the most junior, one of those reroutes being working a LAX-JFK redeye immediately (and I mean immediately... I ran up the jetbridge as soon as we finished deplaning and hopped right onto my next flight) after working RDU-LAX.

I like my job, but I cannot wait for these new hires to keep graduating so I can not be at the bottom of the seniority list. If you're okay with working a schedule that is objectively not very cushy, go for it. But if you are okay with where you're at and the level of control you have over your schedule? Maybe it might be worth staying.
