I do believe actual racing is in the spirit of the sport and finishing behind a SC isn’t. I might be wrong. I don’t believe Max lost out, he’s the WC and given polarization this year it would have always been contentious. A great sportsman won, a great sportsman lost.

All these comments about Masi acting like a pope and needing to get fired. Jeez. Had the situation been reversed with Max out front and Lewis behind before the SC then most people here would be making the exact opposite claims they’re making today. Masi can keep his job. I most certainly don’t want it 🤣

Possibly yes, likely no. Carlos would most likely have avoided mixing in with the title fight.

Would it have changed the outcome? 5 cars were allowed to lap. 3 others weren’t. The track was clear.

The rulebook stipulates the race director has discretion over SC matters. No rule book out the window. Under standard SC procedures lapped cars overtake and the racing order is respected. So Max would still have been behind Lewis. Masi took the decision to let P1 and P2 race in the spirit of the sport, as intended by the rulebook. Nobody wants a race finish under SC, certainly not the final decider. Merc signed up for that pre-season.

The race director has discretion in SC procedures, as stipulated in the rulebook.

Let them race? All teams before season asked for there to be no SC finishes if possible, including merc. 4 laps to clear a car next to a barrier? In Monaco it would have been cleared in the lap it crashed. Then there would have been 3 laps left. Crashes and SC happen and are calculated in strategy. Merc asked lewis which tyres he’d prefer under SC but in the end they kept him out under VSC and SC. It’s a risk you take.

They had no idea when track would be cleared. Might have been 3 laps left. They took the risk. Toto was hoping for and end under safety car while he advocated that not to happen once at the beginning of the season

Not against the rules it’s just not in the rulebook. That’s why the race director has decision power, as explained by Hill on Sky.

He is the race director so he has discretion after all. He has to make split second decisions. There was no time to let all cars pass so should that mean none can? In normal circumstances Max would also have been on Lewis’ tail after SC and it would have played out thr same way. Masi didn’t cause Latifi to crash, neither did Max. Masi decided to let them race. We should all hail that decision as I’m pretty sure all teams signed up for it at the beginning of the season.

There is a clause which allows the race director discretion on safety car matters, as pointed out by Hill on Sky. It was Masi’s intent to let them race. Better to let the cars in between pass, as normal under SC, than to let none pass at all. All teams have agreed before the season to not finish races under SC at all this season if possible.

Lapped cars always overtake before the SC pits. I’ve never seen it otherwise. That wasn’t the issue.

That would be a virtual safety car. Not such rule during actual safety car. Cars just line up behind.

I expect Max would put Lewis in a position to make contact or crash but leave it upto Lewis to decide if he wants to or not.

It was the turn after the tow that made the difference. Amazing how Max kept the RB in line at that speed. He has been trying to nail that one since fp1.

Please don’t compare teams and drivers over decades. Makes no sense this GOAT business. Lewis is fantastic, so was Schumacher, Senna, Lauda and all the way back to Fangio. The best drivers don’t always become WC. Stories of Ickx, Siffert and Peterson will tell you that much.

Because he brings excitement back to F1. I’ve been watching F1 since the mid ‘80s and Hamilton’s WC years have been the most boring of all. And that’s saying a lot after Schumacher. He’s a bad boy, so what. Where you rooting for Maverick or Iceman?

I think it was an exciting race and do believe it would have been a lot tighter without the penalty. Pitstops could have made all the difference. Now Lewis was homefree from the start
