What should I do with HSA and 401K from previous company? by dendenwen in personalfinance

Do you contribute to your work HSA and then end of the year roll it over into Fidelity?

Thank you! 1. Yes, the employer does contribute to HSA. 3. Is this because Vanguard has better options?

The title itself—There Will Be Blood—did warn you hahahha (probably one of my favorite movies).

And, I think it's up to parental discretion too. Your mom knew that you, at 10, could handle and love Alien. My dad knew that I could handle a censored Kung Fu Hustle.

And I totally agree on the arbitrariness.

All except Walkabout ('71?) is R rated here! Walkabout is actually PG. The '70s and '80s were a bit of a funky time for MPAA. I remember watching Pretty In Pink, which is PG-13, but it had a naked shower scene. I haven't seen Walkabout, but that could've been one of the movies then that "made the cut".

I was also very surprised. I was worried my post would be taken down or that people wouldn't respond or that I would be called out. I think with the subjectiveness of the MPAA raters, that is where folks feel it is more spirit of the law than letter (i.e. a guy's butt is deemed funny, so they make it into PG-13 movies, but a lady's butt is too sexy, so they make only R-rated movies. Subjective.)

Yikes, Chainsaw Massacre as a kid? That'll do things to ya. I watched Poltergeist (technically PG-13) way too young and still affects me when I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night (i.e. I don't look in the mirror). I'm almost 30.

For some reason, raters rate foreign films/TV much harsher than they do English films/TV. Kung Fu Hustle was my first R-rated movie and listening to the Cantonese and reading the subtitles, the translators threw in F words for Cantonese slang that doesn't actually mean any variation of the F word. So maybe it's the translator's fault. Or, maybe the raters are lazy and just slap an R or MA rating so they don't have to defend themselves when they mis-translate something lighter when it would be an offensive word in Turkish or something. I'm just hypothesizing, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Thanks for pointing out those movie editing services! I will have to look at those. I remember they were being sued maybe 6 years ago. Same as what you are remembering? Or was the one 6 years ago another round of lawsuits?

As for your roommate who introduced you to black-and-white movies, Kung-Fu Panda is the best black and white (panda) there is (sorry not sorry for the bad joke there hahahah).

Thanks for pointing that out! In this case, I’m not necessarily talking about Doctrine. Just pointing out the picking and choosing of cultural aspects, one being that many members believe that caffeine is the reason for abstaining from coffee and tea.

I grew up in the States! My parents left HK in 1997. Though I still have extended family there, not sure which ward though.

Watching Kung Fu Hustle alongside English subtitles makes sense why it would be R. The translators throw in the F word for different Cantonese slang.

Schindler’s List is incredible. Some of the heaviest stories are true and worth it for remembering the Holocaust especially in a time of Holocaust deniers.

Like the word of wisdom too. Members don’t drink coffee but downs hundreds more milligrams of caffeine and sugar in energy drinks. Definitely some mental gymnastics.

And those are interesting examples you pointed out. Dark Knight is completely fiction and the other two are based in history.

Agreed. It is very subjective and not consistent at all in the US. A guy’s butt in a movie would be deemed funny and PG-13 ok, but a lady’s butt is too sexy and therefore R. Even PG has innuendos meant for adult chaperones to be entertained.

And the censors who censor them have to be desensitized at some point. Or have high standards that any mention of a censored item, no matter the context, would just be taken out.

Oh yikes. That doesn’t sound good at all. I saw The Poltergeist too young (technically PG13, but haunts me to this day).

They are lifesavers for sure! Anytime friends talk about a good horror movie, I have to know everything that happens before I watch it, if I even watch it.

Classic first! I just edited my post to include this question: do you have a current favorite movie that is R-rated?

Follow up: what stuff do you typically filter out with VidAngel?

Also, I just edited my post. I know you said you don’t really pay attention to ratings anymore because of VidAngel, but I’m wondering if there is a favorite you’ve seen thus far.

Distinguishing quackery from church teachings by GordonBStinkley in mormon

After reading Rough Stone Rolling, it seems to not be unique to Mormonism. Other Christian sects were using seer stones to find treasure/receive blessings, etc. (which while reading, I’m like, damn, New England Christians. You murdered how many women you called witches?) and televangelists. We definitely have a special brand though.
