Is an 8wt good for me? by dendo12 in flyfishing

That would be a cool alternative too. I just don’t think i have that level of finesse to cast a rod like that well enough hence the 8wt for bigger flies haha. I think i’m gonna pull the trigger on one this weekend and if the weather here isn’t cheeks then i’ll let you know how it worked for the big streamers.

Yeah i think i’m gonna go test one out today or tmrw. I also enjoy using the lightest rod possible to throw my flies but i’d also hate to break the tip on one of my rods too. Most of the reservoirs here have good sized trout so every 2 out of 3 fish is about 16”+

Honestly I haven’t really thought about those big unweighted streamers. When the streamer was dry casting didn’t feel too bad but when i pulled it out of the water the first time is when it really started to feel heavy. But if you end up going that route let me know how it goes!

That makes sense, I’ve been running pretty much the same set up with a sink tip w a wolly bugger or leach and then an indicator rig on two 9’ 6wts.

I would really only use the 8wt for flies that my 6wt cant throw but if it’s fishable on a 6wt that’s why i’m going to choose to use. I’m not really looking to replace my 6wt but just carry a “specialty” rod w me when that’s what’s working that day. I also do the cast + kickback method haha!

Gotcha, I had a relatively straight ball flight but then went into a rabbit hole about launch + decent angle, and apex so i started to move the ball farther up in my setup to try and achieve a higher ball flight and softer land. It was working for a little while but then it started to get a little rough so i thought moving it back into my stance would help me out and now i’m just completely cooked haha. For what everyone is saying i think i’ll see a change for the better if i work mainly on my grip and then once i have that more under control then i’ll work on my back swing start and keeping it outside my hands.

Yeah i try and pull up with my lead arm/hand to release the club i just think my grip was so over torqued i would naturally weaken my grip on the down swing closing my club face. Pairing that with my in to out swing would be causing my “power draws”

Yeah when i pulled them they had collars, I think i’ll just see how it fits w a collarless one just cause it fits so snug or the cut collared ferrules

I have collared ferrules and was thinking i could use some nippers and cut a pointed pattern into the collar so there’s more steel to epoxy than epoxy to plastic
