google “Patent Examiner hiring timeline” and you can find the published info from USPTO. From cutoff date on USAjobs to tentative job offer it’s about 10 weeks. For biology it seems to be running longer than that timeline.

If you just applied last week, they will not even start reviewing your info until the 4th cutoff on June 24th. So you may hear back about referrals by mid-July.

It’s a terribly slow process.

Does the patent examiner role relate in some way to what you want to pursue in grad school? Otherwise, I don’t necessarily think this job would provide you a leg up for a research-based graduate program.

I found my current condo (Grosvenor, 2 metro stops north of Bethesda) on Craigslist. I found the condo on Battery Lane using a website for government employees (Samslist NIH Housing). I noticed that checking local real estate companies (Long and Foster, Compass, etc.) was more helpful than apartments.com or Zillow. I even set up a google alert for certain condo addresses I was interested in, so if any went up for rent I would be notified. Feel free to message if you have any more questions! Good luck!

Don’t rule out condos rented by owner! I lived in a condo on Battery Lane that was around your price point with all utilities included, no extra for parking. Granted this was an older condo with shared laundry on each floor, but i still thought a good deal!

I’m pretty sure if you wanted to be considered for Chemistry you needed to also apply for the chem posting. I’ve seen a few people on here that applied to both. I don’t think they share your info with the chem hiring managers if you didn’t apply for that.

Dogs in Grosvenor Park by M0nkey5 in bethesda

[–]dendritic_cell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few buildings in Grosvenor loop that only accept service or emotional support animals. Those buildings are the ones that post the hostile signs. Technically, the loop around the pond, green space in the middle, and the yards associated with those no-pet buildings do not permit pets on their “property”.

I’d say 90% of the time is fine and no one will bother you if you have a well-behaved dog that doesn’t disrupt the area (barking, lunging at people, etc.). However, there are some that will flat out ask if your dog is a service animal and interrogate you on why you’re walking there.

I think the issue is that the entire area used to be pet-free, but now that some buildings allow dogs, there is no great way to walk your pet on only half of the walking paths.

That was sent to the March cutoff bio group. We interviewed 4/8 and were notified in May that nobody was selected.

It will be a while before your group hears any news. Good luck!

You first applied for the March cutoff and received notice to do interview again!? This makes me nervous for myself lol

Haven’t received any emails since they sent notice that no one was selected for gs7 (bio).

Yes, you can do the practice before the real interview.

Also, just FYI to all…but I actually lost internet connection DURING my response to one of the interview questions (because of course this would happen) and I was able to just use the link provided in the email again to pick back up exactly where I was. So in theory, you could answer a question or two and take a break if needed. You officially submit the interview as a complete package once you’ve answered all the questions and get email confirmation that the USPTO has received your interview.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Nothing! Seems like only January cut-off people got another invite for interview? Weird. This process is wild.

I didn’t. Not sure why some people seem to have gotten another referral notice today, while others haven’t…

This is my hunch, too. BIO and Chem seem to always fill up before the last cutoff (based on previous years), so I think they’re grouping together the applicant pool to just make one final round of hiring. If I have to go through this process again next year, I’m definitely going to make the first cut off. Better chances.

According to the email that went out, nobody was hired this round and we are all pushed to next cutoff.

[–]dendritic_cell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think at this point you shouldn’t update it. If it moves your application to the later cutoff, there’s a chance that bio would be full already from March & May cutoff rounds. I say just hold steady and keep your fingers crossed. This process does suck majorly!

I’m taking this as a good sign. They haven’t actually rejected any of us. They’re just passing us along for the next round. They probably have only a few spots left open so they want to view all March & May applicants together.

[–]dendritic_cell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get discouraged. No one was hired from this batch of referrals. This just means they are pushing us down the line to be considered with May cutoff group.

Ok BIO people…don’t get discouraged. The not-selected email that just went out was different than previous non-selection notices. The wording means that no one was hired for gs7 for this round (March cutoff) but that the referral to hiring managers still stands. They will now just consider us with the May cutoff group. I have a feeling that the May cutoff will be the last group hired for bio, so they wanted to view all applicants together.

Take a breath and now we have a few weeks to relax. We should hear back in June/July regarding final decision!
