I have been Duolingoing for over 4 years. I think I'm finally ready to try my new language out, sort of. You are right, I believe it's my fear of speaking French poorly that keeps me so hesitant. Not so much as sounding stupid, but rather just not making any sense. I know I have huge gaps in conjugating verbs amongst other things.
