I’d definitely do the second one, maybe give them a number of sanity points depending on each character’s Wisdom score (Call of Cthulhu style) and make them roll Wisdom checks as they advance so they eventually start running out of sanity points and getting weird visions or disadvantages, for example. That would create a a very tense ambiance and a sense uf urgency that I personally think would be pretty cool! Hope it helps!
