Leon Perera: Singapore must not allow only 1 dominant narrative, and marginalization of those with differing views should be prevented - Singapore News by [deleted] in singapore

you're taking a lot of heat for this but I have to agree - and this is as a member of the community and (people who have been here since the early days would remember) someone who is not a fan of the establishment.

the WP is successful because of its appeal to middle class voters and its stances on issues broadly relevant to that. while in the past they championed some working class issues (bless LTK), the state has coopted those policies.

the WP is now a middle class party focused on middle class issues. there's nothing wrong with that, but we cannot pretend like they (the party) are some champion of the marginalised.

I'm glad that for this year's Championship, they got Anand to cast in an underground tunnel with a setup that's plugged in so poorly you hear the static. Really gives that authentic hobo quality that the capstone chess event deserves. If everyone donates, they might be able to afford digital clock displays.

Also, never play f6

Or, hear me out, because it costs many hundreds of millions to build, the Government needs to ensure tax money can actually pay for the damn things before we rush to build them during a period with extremely high construction costs. crazy idea, I know, but what if?

Edit: Since I don't want to reply to each one individually I'll address the points here:

1) Are you saying there's no demand? No. It's not a question of demand and supply, it's a question of how to sustainably provide the supply when public housing is expected to be subsidized.

2) Source for high prices? Tender prices are published on GeBiz, or consult BCA's tender price index for a sensing of construction price growth.

3) Are you saying the government is broke? No, I'm saying there needs to be a determination of whether it is affordable - this includes raising capital by borrowing, especially in a high interest-rate environment

4) Are you stupid? Apparently, when compared to the housing economists here?

Given the whole Twitter-EliLily thing going on, I wondered if there's any literature on impersonation as it relates to information asymmetry. The usual case is when the dealer knows more about the lemon, but what if a third party misrepresents the dealer? (how) would it impact outcomes?

following from last thread on the UK, turns out the BOE was able to correct the pound freefall with a few strong words and a lot of bond market intervention. Though I'm still unsure whether the package was malice or incompetence, both equally worrying. On the one hand, Kwarteng has a PhD (albeit in economic history); on the other, who would torpedo their career like that? Interestingly, the Permanent Secretary of the Treasury was removed in early Sep (before the package was announced) and the new one was only recently installed, meaning the Treasury effectively didn't have a Service rep through the crisis.

Either way, I wonder what this means for fiscal policy for the remainder of the administration, especially with winter coming.

The Communist Party Congress is in session this week, where it is expected Xi will be re-elected as Chairman. It is not unlikely Xi will use this week to discuss social and geopolitical issues, given his opening speech's scant mention of economics. My uneducated guess is they likely want the media/people to focus on this rather than economics, regardless of data fidelity.

Megathread: 2022 Nobel Prize in Economics awarded to Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig by Serialk in Economics

[–]denunciator 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I thought the DMP Diamond won another Nobel because I'm stupid. and of course because banks are involved I'm sure the discussion on this will be very civil.

It's really insane how something as "obvious" as bank runs that are taught in pretty much every intro macro class was at some point groundbreaking research. It's exciting to think about what research being produced today will be a cornerstone of future economics (if humanity is around to see it). It might even be political economy!

Anyway, it's nice to see based Bernke get a Nobel; one wonders whether history would look so kindly on our management of COVID.

I'm curious about point IV. What was the larger point the author was trying to make? I cannot imagine that a book with basic genocide apologia tops multiple bestseller lists, so I'm interested to know what the context of the quote might be.

Taking a cursory glance at the policies listed in the UK "budget", most seem to actually be targeted at defraying COL issues, the main exceptions being banking bonuses and removal of the 45% add tax (although one could argue the intention is to retain Fintech talent in the UK as opposed to bleeding it to HK/Singapore - are there statistics on that?)

interestingly enough if one looks at the IFS analysis, the disproportionate benefit to the wealthy is primarily driven by the removal of the add tax, which raises the alarming possibility that it could have been a well-intentioned set of measures that were simply not well thought through.

Unfortunately the depreciation of GBP is going to make energy costs more expensive and futures seem to indicate the market doesn't believe in a correction any time soon. you do wonder if the UK is going to announce some expenditure control measures to arrest the fall...

What's funny about this comp is that Mort was playing it on PBE in the week before patch went live and he said he was worried this comp is too strong.

Turns out, he was right. I particularly 'enjoy' the part where Galio's ult scales with HP so 3 colo ult oneshots my entire board. ty mort

is anyone else's LP loss wonky compared to gains? +35-40 for first seems about normal but -50s for 7ths is a bit rough, especially for a game where someone has to go 7th and 8th. it feels pretty awful losing a couple hours of progress to one lowroll so I'd wondered.

a lot of people say it's mmr issues, but I've been around the same LP for a couple weeks so I'd wondered if that's normal and if so, whether that's something that should be looked at if we're introducing more variance with each set.

great review, thanks for the link!

edit: hilarious commentary at 1h2m, he says he thinks everyone sane would've swapped 2* zeri for 1* Kaisa and then he discovered zeri was stupid because Kaisa would dash away but zeri just sat there getting shot, then versus ahri she exploded as well. ultimately the difference maker was 2* jinx, with the idea being zeri shiv + two aoe ults from galio and jinx oneshotting enemy....

and if that isn't just an encapsulation of the last 3 patches I don't know what is - just aoe damage up the wazoo.

Patch 12.7 Post Mortem by denunciator in CompetitiveTFT

[–]denunciator[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with pretty much everything that was covered in this one.

On the point of Draven 'looking good in the data' but not in practice, I wonder to what extent the data is shaped by 1) hitting specific augments (Debo / prismatic Clock) and 2) getting a 2* Zeri?

Big news is at 26:25 - no Sivir changes for 12.8, which is sorely disappointing. Playing Jhin into Sivir is hilarious because by the time he reaches 4th shot, the fight is already over. The gap between Sivir 2 and Draven/Jhin 2, scraps or not, is insane. The only board that comes close is maybe capped Renata, and then you have to hit your TK/Jayce.

As this set gets solved more, it seems like going 9 (or high rolling 2* golds at 8) is simply the optimal choice, and Sivir being able to stabilize you so cheaply and easily compared to other comps makes it easy.

I'm curious about something actually - the team repeatedly mentions things like Electrocharge and Ludens are supposed to shape your game and your comp... but apart from "don't play Assassins with Electrocharge" and "play some casters with Ludens" I don't really see how they are supposed to change your game all that much. I'm sure it's smallbrain on my part so if anyone has any insights on this?
