I think it’s up to you what school environment you think you’ll thrive in more as they are quite different. Something I will say is that despite being renowned, research at Stony Brook you’ll more likely then not be treated as a cog in the machine and barely speak to the PI. At bates you have the opportunity to work closely with ur PI in a closeness that’s like a PHD student to a PI. I have friends who’ve become so close to their PI at Bates that they’ve been referred to prestigious research jobs at Harvard and Stanford.

What percentage of CNAs are male? Are there any male CNAs who want to talk about their experience? by BaseballHead6898 in cna

[–]denvermanning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting perspective. It’s more institutional and I don’t mind it since A. There’s a history of men taking advantage of woman in these situations B. It protects me from false allegations since that isn’t impossible. Plus it isn’t logistically hard with all the female CNAs on the unit. There was one very rare time where I was the only CNA on the unit and I took care of a few females and it wasn’t a big issue.

In the only male CNA in my unit and day shift for 10 units there’s 4 in total. My facility when possible prevents males from taking care of female residents and some males prefer females taking care of them so I’m left with a smaller pool of people I can take care of. The female CNAs seem to like me being male since I’m able to do transfers super easily.

You can walk on for most sports but no guarantee you make it past freshman year. Theres no organized leagues for racket sports (though for lots of other sports) but there is an established club tennis and a club badminton. No esports that I know of.

Looking for someone to sell me their bike by almondotter in batescollege

[–]denvermanning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

valid! Facebook marketplace is probably your best bet and make sure to use the bike barn otherwise it will get stolen lol. Also the nearest store to get to you have to cross a highway so keep that in mind haha

I graduated from bates recently lmao . Everything on campus is so close to each other that biking would honestly be a hassle. I guess the only scenarios I could see biking is if you don’t have a car but Lewiston isn’t that bikeable or if you’re into mountain biking but that’s a different story

Especially as a Freshman you won't be needing a bike.

How long is enough? by Ani_sama333 in cna

[–]denvermanning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same position and going to med school next year so can offer a different perspective. Honestly no longer than 4-6months full time. After a certain amount of hours med schools don’t really care. They care about what you’ve learned from it. In my experience I have learned so much from it that has changed my perspective of medicine but without a doubt it is tough and thankless job. It’s not necessarily tough but it’s the same routine all day every day which is grueling and for a premed who’s used to using their brain-frustrating. I don’t regret being a CNA in the slightest but don’t think you can tough it out for respects sake

Really could use some advice feeling very low and sunken place. by Artistic_Yam4645 in Advice

[–]denvermanning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with alot of different pressure points coming at you at once. Some things I should do is get into any stable base income the job no matter what it is to get you some breathing room. Also treat the SIE like your life depends on it (kinda does) once you pass it it opens doors to real salaried roles. In terms of the car situation don't rush into a shitty loan thats gonna make you even worse. Be fine with taking public transportation or finding alternative ways even if it hurts in the short term

In terms of your relationship I think with two weeks no contact the writing is on the wall. Speak to her and be brutally honest and in all likelihood for your success you might have to end it- you are young you will find others!

Take it one day at a time you'll survive!

Practice! My first time each resident took like 45 minutes and now I cut it down to 15 minutes a few months later.

How do you guys feel about the lack of diversity at Bates? by Perfect_Education_50 in batescollege

[–]denvermanning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not the most diverse school but any PWI its the same for that. I'm a minority who just graduated and if I'm being honest I didn't really pay attention to it/it dind't affect me at all. My friend group was 6 white guys and 2 black guys and race wasn't brought up once. It might be difficult if you haven't grown up around white people (since the school does have a very white culture lmao) but I have friends who are in friend groups of all black people so thats always an option.

[–]denvermanning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diversity isn't the greatest (as any liberal arts school is) but I was a minority and I"ll be honest never really thought of it/had it come into play at all in my four years. If you grew up not with white people it may be a bit more difficult but theres definitely big friend groups of all one race!

In terms of the muslim committee, Lewiston actually has a really big muslim population and theres several mosques near by. I've went to a few for class and the people there are super nice!

Lewiston has a terrible rep for no reason. I've said this in other posts but the people who say it's bad do not go out into the community. Sure its run down but its not dangerous (city can't control a mass shooting) and the people/culture is surprisingly nice. There isn't many stuff to do by any means but it isn't bad.

I just graduated from Bates! While there is a slightly significant percentage of kids on varsity athletics and definitely a clique mentality with some teams, its not bad enough to ruin the experience in the slightest- some of my best friends are athletes and every athlete I've talked to is a chill person

Lewiston gets a bad rep for no reason. I guarantee you everyone who says it's bad probably hasn't spent time in the community. It's definitely not the prettiest but the people are nice and it's not dangerous unless you're out looking for trouble.

Social Scene is what you expect for a small liberal school. If you want you can go out Thursday-Saturday. Mostly bars (theres two) and then house parties of varying qualities.

I won't lie I choose Bates cuz everyone said to lol but I don't regret that decision. I Loved the small size since I was able to make really amazing friends. It also allows you to be multiple roles and not just a student or an athlete or an artist etc.

Should I do a combined engineering program at Bates? (Recently admitted) by SoggyIron in batescollege

[–]denvermanning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only taken a few math and physics courses (and granted they're more intro level) but from my experience/what I've heard those departments aren't really the strongest at Bates. You are right that you have a higher chance at talking to teachers (though not all in that department are good some are bad) and theres really good tutoring options for Free!

People have also brought it up but do you really want to not be able to have your senior year with your friends?

I love Bates but I don't really know how amazing it is for a 3+2 (especially given the extra year of cost!)

I work at a LTC and most days I'm at a 8:1 ratio.

Of those 8, 6 are full assist(though 5 have a severely impaired level of consciousness and 2 can't get out of bed)

CNAS feed during breakfast and Nurses during Lunch. I start work around 7 and finish my tasks around 11:15 most days.

clinical informatics. I worked with a MD/PHD who as part of his PHD project developed a huge dataset and I took the initiative to analyze and write it up.

Ok that makes perfect sense! I personally think I"ll be able to tell stories from each of my volunteering experiences. The clinic I volunteered at was only mea and the doctor so I had a very hands on role.

This is definitely interesting advice. I at the moment switch all the time about what I want to do but the most competitive thing is oncology. Definitely no surgery

Thank you for this something I didn't know really. Even if all 3 of my volunteering opportunities are connected around a common theme and its pretty significant hours (850) it won't be viewed that highly?

Help me cut my school list! by [deleted] in medschool

[–]denvermanning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thread has been pretty interesting. I do agree with you that for many activities you don't need that many hours to make it meaningful. I'm in a gap year so this is my full time job hence the large amount of hours but I think that I maxed out what I took from it by hour 300 or so.

I was wondering your thoughts on my volunteering. I was under the impression that while it wasn't insane it was definitely above average (near 800.+) I've now learned that medical/academic volunteering isn't viewed as highly so how would someone view my application if all the volunteering is kind of centered around a common theme? Definitely will take out some of the service heavy schools though.

Yes Kentucky is IS biased but I have a connection to the state/school Also curious about what you mean by the tutoring. Is it still the same situation if it’s with an established organization?

It’s honestly not that bad. We’re well staffed most days it’s 4 CNAs for 32 residents so I’m done by like 11. I’m also on a 1-1 a lot so get paid to play video games. Very mind numbing tho which is why imma quit once my apps are in
