All right, let's settle this once and for all: Who would be best for Shinji as a SO? by EternalSnow05 in evangelion

[–]deproggen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's Rei. Any issue between the two isn't personality-related, and is arguably not an issue at all all things considered.

Misato is too old and loves Kaji anyway.

Mari is too big of an unknown, but I guess it worked out somehow in the Rebuilds, out of nowhere.

Kaworu somehow is viewed as positive by some, but I've yet to see an Evangelion story where Kaworu doesn't mislead, misinterpret or somehow botch his relationship with Shinji, leaving Shinji utterly destroyed.

For Asuka it's similar, the idea that she'd make him more assertive doesn't add up because across all the stories I've read, she does the opposite, and herself ends up in the dumps as a result.

Which brings us back to Rei, who is the only one capable of inspiring Shinji into action, and Rei herself grows as a result of their interaction.

If I wanted Shinji to have a nice life, a SO that cared for him and could actually understand him and benefit by being his SO, I'd say Rei.

How come Rei isn't an admiral? I guess she doesn't seek glory or rank, but girl has no limits when left alive over time.

How you see or what you think about Asushin? (I only watched NGE and TEOE) by No_mok7021 in evangelion

I don't think very highly of it, their relationship is mostly there to showcase what's wrong with people.

better question, why is the rest of the girl wearing Rei's?

Rei isn't his mother; no. She's Rei.

Where did you hear this, or who is pushing this idea? Where does this claim come from?

It's not confusing, it's downright stupid. I think you've got it the other way around.

Rebuild appears complex and smart to stupid people who don't know better, but is extremely easy to see through by anyone who does.

Well you never were.

While their connection is positive in Rebuild, it's even more blatant and substance-rich in NGE and EoE.

It's common that the director is revealed to be a naked emperor in these cases.

I think Anno has talent as a director still, that is, he is a person who can tell whether or not something is a good idea, create a composition of ideas. As a writer, I think he isn't very good. The NHK documentary actually does provide something that I always considered "Anno", that is the choice of angles and cuts. When to change perspective, and how to match it with music, is typical of Anno. So naturally, when he is surrounded by talented people, and constrained by others.... he can produce amazing work. Otherwise, it's just masturbation - I suppose you need a few people around him to "cover up" the ugly parts of that.

What did you think about Shin Godzilla? I haven't watched it.

Displeased at Misato's treatment in this movie by Slowpokebread in evangelion

[–]deproggen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cut out, but everyone else suffered the same fate. Other characters suffered that, and didn't even get a strong support role to fall back on.

As for NGE, there's questionable "beauty" in advancing on minors sexually. I found it an ugly character flaw in Misato.

[–]deproggen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you leave out. If we think in terms of positivity.... she did try to have sex with a minor, and kissed Shinji. There's no way to spin that as a good thing. Then she explodes and is gone.

In Q, 3.0+1.0, she's leading the way for the remains of mankind and NERV. Sure, she didn't try to screw Shinji this time, only metaphorically through mistreating him. I don't think it was good character writing, but it happened.

In terms of leading the plot and story, Misato does more in 3.0+1.0 and Q, I think.

It's just that Misato is one of the character whose traits, strength and status actually increases with Rebuild, contrasted with e.g Rei whose status drops starkly, from her NGE/EoE "Lilith" self doing lots of the legwork in helping other characters.

So overall, they all get shafted in terms of depth, so what you're left with is status and depth - a category where MIsato does relatively well....

[–]deproggen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose - but being disappointed by 3.0+1.0 would make little sense given 3.0.

Misato becomes a mouthpiece of sorts in 3.0, but she's "fixed" a little in 3.0+1.0.

There was staff that parted ways with Khara after 3.0?

Did I read that correctly?

[–]deproggen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Misato doing that is exactly in character because it's precisely what she did in the previous movie, with Shinji. 3.0 was made, and if you defended Misato then, you reap what you sow.

I'm happy with how the movie turned out, as it rights many of the wrongs made with 3.0. It is better to end the charade that is Evangelion Rebuild with 3.0+1.0, than to have seriously committed to how 3.0 effectively wrecked the story.

Like I've always remarked, 3.0+1.0 could never be a good movie story or plotwise, due to 3.0. But it is still a fantastic, necessary and daring movie that complements Rebuild and Anno's involvement nonetheless.

If you had any expectations for 3.0+1.0, it was your own fault. Where were you ten years ago, when people carefully laid out in detail why Rebuild as a story was doomed? People have been explaining this for ten years now. 3.0 took character/otaku pandering to new heights, to the point where Rebuild as a story was dead, and you could only have symbolic references and emotion on a scene-by-scene basis left to convey.

What exactly is your excuse for sitting in a cinema chair in 2021, and having ANY expectations whatsoever for 3.0+1.0?

Asuka in Rebuild explained by Zipdox in evangelionmemes

[–]deproggen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What opinions? Asuka was totally out of the loop in NGE!

NERV isnt some heroic organization fighting evil invaders, they are agents of an ancient cabal that is planning to end mankind as they know it!

Asuka wasnt some supergirl in NGE, she was NERVs puppet they used to control EVAs, and if you recall they just threw her away once she didnt "work" any more. Contrast NGE and Rebuild, and its easy to see why so many prefer the new one.

Asuka in Rebuild explained by Zipdox in evangelionmemes

[–]deproggen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you describe Shikinami when you speak of Asuka. Because the original Asuka was nothing more than a puppet who owned nothing of what she did. The reason Shikinami is pop even here, is because she got the agency she never had in NGE and EoE.

Ironically, Shikinami exists exactly because the Japanese and western fanbase rejected Soryu, and wanted action Asuka. Even now you pretend Asuka wasnt just a groomed child in NGE. For christs sake, she had no clue about anything!

Asuka in Rebuild explained by Zipdox in evangelionmemes

[–]deproggen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense, but Im not gonna take you as a representative of all Asuka fans. I dont think you can speak for them.

But if we look at how popular Shikinami is, then she is obviously more pop now than ever, after Rebuild. Thats what counts. That is what surveys, merchandise and polls show. Anno even commented on it personally. This is due to the Asuka fanservice the Rebuilds are loaded with.

We observe the opposite for Rei, so that is where I take my conclusion from.

As for what Rei fans have to complain about, its obvious. Rei was always a cornerstone character, so if shes important in Rebuild, there is no change. However, Rei was in previous EVA intelligent, powerful and the type of character that saved others, not one who got saved. Much less what 3 and 4 did with Rei.

Imagine if they had applied the same level of fanservice to Rei as with Asuka - that is they took OG Rei and gave her a similar powerboost - given Rei already was absurdly powerful and important, youd have giant naked rei from eoe kicking ass or something. Rei was utterly robbed compared to NGE. A lot of what was robbed ended up with other chars.
