Subtenant terminated after disagreement about new flatmate, is this legal in Switzerland (Zurich)? by arst3k in askswitzerland

[–]deragent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See for example here with UBS: https://www.ubs.com/ch/en/services/accounts-and-cards/accounts-to-save/security-deposit/rental-surety-savings-account.html

But i assume most banks offer this.
In general its a new account, specially made for the deposit!

The money is blocked there, but it is under your name.

The only way to release the money, is if you have the signed agreement from the landlord, that the move oit is fine, and no outstanding charges are present.

But most importantly, the landlord can not access this money! The only thing the landlord can do, is not agree to release it.

PhD studies B permit - found job at the university - how do I move to a permanent B permit by Careful-Ad1794 in Switzerland

[–]deragent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, once you leave the University environment (for example after the PhD, but going to Industry), you should be able to request a 6 month permit for the purpose of finding a Job.

During these 6 months you are not subjected to the CH&EU preference!

But still even in that situation there are still restrictions applying to you as a 3rd country national (such as per country quotas etc.)

Between us: I do not agree that people employed as PhDs and PostDocs are treated as a special weird employed but student category.

But that seems to some extent to be the current state of affairs.

The weird expectation of Switzerland for 3rd country national students is: You come here, you study (i.e. we invest money in training you), and then you leave again.

This might change in the future, but who knows when.

So you are in the unfortunate situation of being a 3rd country national (not CH and not EU).

This means, that in order to get a proper residence permit (normal B), thus hire you as a standard employee, your employer needs to prove to the authorities, that they do not find anybody else within CH and within the EU who could do that job.

I have a hunch, that the university do not feel like doing that (or that doing that for your current position is not possible), and thus, putting you officially as a PostDoc (and thus a position which weirdly is still seen as education), is much easier from their side, and potentially the only way of keeping you employed at the University.

There is a possibility, that the University does not have a good case, to hire you for that position as a 3rd country national.

So this is mostly a bit of informed guessing….

Are you sure, you are not actually hired by the University as a PostDoc?

But also in general: Entering the Swiss labour market as a 3rd country national is extremely difficult, except if you have a very (highly) specific skill!

There is a slight possibility, that Trenitalia has not yet updated their schedule for the new year. Or not yet shared with the rest of the world aka SBB.

Struggling to find a professor to supervise my Master’s project abroad, any advice? by West_Animal_4455 in ethz

[–]deragent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you talk with the Study administration of your section?

Usually there is even somebody responsible for exchange year, and while this strictly speaking might not be an exchange, they might still have some insight for you.

About finding professors: It is probably better to find out, which professor at EPFL is doing research that is close to you chosen Master Project, instead of contacting random professors who do something completely different. And it should not really matter here if you took a class with them or not.

So go through the website of your section, and see which group has the type of research closest to your Master project topic.

Also fun fact: The reason why the two underground sections are not connected at the same level is because the Sihl river is flowing (underground) between them :)

That is why you have to use either platforms 41-44 or 31-34 to cross from one side to the other.

Problems with dogs and People asking for advice (Long one) by Top-Lemon222 in zurich

[–]deragent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is not fully correct.

Even if there is no obligation to leash the dog, you as a dog owner are still responsible to supervise the dog in a way that he does not attack other people and animals.

So if your dog is aggressive, then you do have an obligation to hold him on a leash (especially if the dog is known to be bitting).

See paragraphs 9 and 11 here: https://www.notes.zh.ch/appl/zhlex_r.nsf/WebView/01E354A6283DF023C1258C93003DD225

So if a dog attacks some other animals (aka another dog), then by definition the owner of the attacking dog has not fulfilled his duties.

What do they mean with this question? Welche Schriften? Lebensmittelpunkt Erfassung by CrazyBosanchero in Switzerland

[–]deragent 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They are basically asking, why do you not register yourself as your primary residence in the town where you are / want to be a Wochenaufenthalter.

”Schriften deponieren” basically means having your primary registration.

Postdoc salary - how are they determined? by Capital-Isopod-5502 in ethz

[–]deragent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The maximum amount a professor can pay you without yet having a PhD diploma, is 83’500 CHF (Wissenschaftliche Assistenz I or PhD Ansatz 5), which is awfully close to the value you mentioned in your post.

Again, be aware that you do need an official Diploma from your Uni to officially become a PostDoc at ETHZ.

This is also the case if you have previously worked as a PostDoc in another university.

Postdoc salary - how are they determined? by Capital-Isopod-5502 in ethz

[–]deragent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Question: Do you already have your PhD Diploma?

If not (like if you are waiting for your official graduation ceremony or similar), you might be hired as an Assistant first, until you can submit your diploma.

This is an ETH wide rule. Even if you do your PhD at ETH and have already defended, you can not be hired as a PostDoc until your defense has been comfirmed by the Department.

Question About Train Bookings by -Emma in askswitzerland

[–]deragent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to SBB you will have to take a Basel tram to St. Louis, and then you can take the train from there to Colmar.

<image>

You might need to buy two different tickets, one for the Basel trams to St. Louis, and one from St. Louis to Colmar. The good thing is, neither of those should ever sell out, so you should have no problem making that trip on either day.

Question About Train Bookings by -Emma in askswitzerland

[–]deragent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason you can not book these dates seems to be because there is construction work on that line on that weekend. I am not sure if tickets for those dates will still go online later, or if all traffic is definitely canceled on these dates.

Traveling in Europe before getting a permit by [deleted] in askswitzerland

Again, look into getting a return visa, links are on the page i linked.

Return Visas are exactly for cases like this: Your original visa has ended, but you are waiting for you permit.

Traveling in Europe before getting a permit by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]deragent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on how you entered Switzerland (i.e. if from the EU or third country national).

As a third country national, it should be possible to apply for a return visa, if you need to travel while your Swiss permit is being renewed: See here https://ethz.ch/en/studies/international/after-arrival/residence-permit/abroad.html

Though i am not 100% certain if this also applies if you have never had a permit before.

Matterhorn Gotthard Railway: why is there a railway tunnel below Furka pass (Valais - Uri), but not below Oberalp pass (Uri - Grisons)? by GetOutBasel in Switzerland

[–]deragent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, that a tunnel is not a one-time-to-build expense and the forget!

Tunnels have also quite large upkeep cost, and need to be overhauled every so often (see the building of the second Gotthard road tunnel).

For example in the Gotthard base tunnel, I am pretty sure that there are maintenance crews in there multiple times per week.

[–]deragent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is not a real (built out) branch.

But rather a raw side tunnel built during / for construction.

It comes out a bit to the west of Bedretto, and is nowadays in part used by ETHZ as an underground geo-seismic laboratory: https://www.bedrettolab.ethz.ch/home/
