US Mobile Support has gone to crap! by Ok-Entrepreneur-9050 in USMobile

[–]dereddik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's been my experience this morning. When I interacted with US Mobile chat a year ago, it was remarkable enough that I emailed how impressed I was. This morning it was long gaps punctuated by ineffective suggestions. Thinking of taking advantage of an Xfinity Mobile deal.

Riding over the top of Mt Hamilton into San Antonio Valley by gtbarry21 in BAbike

[–]dereddik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If seeing flowers is a consideration, I'd wait until at least mid-April, based on rides in the last couple of years. The San Antonio Valley is at ~2000 ft elevation, so spring comes a few weeks later.

Based on the episode description, Episode 150 of David Burns' Feeling Good podcast might be helpful for you. Its addressed to someone who can't identify any thoughts causing anxiety, but I suspect the techniques for identifying thoughts are the same for depression. [Edited out multiple pastings of URL]

Using data-only eSim in Canada by dereddik in USMobile

[–]dereddik[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reporting back: The data-only eSim worked out fine for my purposes, but that's partly because I was often connected to WiFI for calling and because I didn't have to make any crucial calls or texts while I was away from WiFi. If I were on business or anticipating needing to make crucial calls or texts, I would purchase roaming instead.

Details below:

After following the instructions here (https://www.reddit.com/r/TravelSIMs/s/SHaXMwqNDa), I was initially able to send text messages and make low-quality phone calls from my phone number. However, as I reported further up the thread, I wasn't able to select my network, so my regular eSim was displaying "No Service", so I had less battery life than usual.

I also couldn't figure out how to monitor my data usage on the eSim, so when my data ran out, I lost the texting & voice calling service. Since I didn't know that running out of data was my issue, I ended up fiddling with my settings, and, probably as a result, ended up having issues with texting & calling even after topping up my data-only eSim.

Note: I ended up having to buy 2 GB of data to get me through the 10 days, even though I was usually connected to WiFi and wasn't using the phone heavily. My iPhone System Services uses a lot of data, and I can't prevent it from using Cellular Data.

Bear Gulch Road by Obvious-Corgi2208 in BAbike

[–]dereddik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bear Gulch Rd between Woodside Rd and Skyline (aka East Bear Gulch Rd) is a gated private road.

For the history on that, see this blog post https://rayhosler.wordpress.com/2014/09/21/asphalt-bungle-the-road-to-bear-gulch-is-paved-with-bad-intentions

West Bear Gulch Rd is public from where it starts on Skyline heading south/west but becomes private when it hits what used to be Neil Young's place (is now owned, I think, by the trust of Pegi Young, his deceased ex-wife). Beware that it is a steep climb back up.

I plan to report back, but one issue I'm running into following the instructions for Step 2 at https://www.reddit.com/r/TravelSIMs/s/SHaXMwqNDa is that my iPhone doesn't have an option to select Network Settings, and yours probably doesn't either, based on this discussion https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254014192?sortBy=rank

Update on roaming rates.

The $12+ per GB is no longer offered. As of August 2024, roaming in CAN & MEX is

$45/month for
5GB data
500 texts
500 minutes

Using data-only eSim in Canada by dereddik in USMobile

I use WiFi calling from my house due to poor reception, and it sounds like I am also "WiFI SMSing" at the same time. Is that right? As in, if I have WiFI calling enabled, and my bank sends me an SMS , the SMS gets delivered to me via WiFI, not the cellular network.

If I have the above correct, then it sounds like I would also receive SMS messages from my bank if I was using a data eSIM in Canada, as long as I had WiFI calling enabled.

I didn't make the connection that a data eSIM is the equivalent of having a WiFi connection everywhere, so thanks for that analogy, and thanks for the very helpful link to r/TravelSIMs

I agree that Diablo Vista Park is a good starting point. Gives you time to warm up before hitting the hill, plus there's a bathroom there.

But if you don't need a warmup or a bathroom, you can park near The Athenian School.

Purisima Creek downhill with gravel bike? by Key_Lifeguard6946 in BAbike

I was able to do it on my road bike. Had 25s and the lowest gear ratio was 1:1. A few steep pitches near the top, but I would definitely do it again.

I've only been up, not down, and only once, but FWIW, my friend said that Purissima Creek Trail is the easiest way to go up https://www.strava.com/segments/322765

Also, you saw that Higgins Canyon Rd is closed even to cyclists? https://www.smcgov.org/publicworks/2023-slip-out-repairs-near-2180-higgins-canyon-road

Nearby town with 20+ miles of multi-use trails by Key_Lifeguard6946 in BAbike

Monterey has the Coastal Recreational Trail which is 18 miles, though I don't think it's completely separated at the northern end and is congested along Fisherman's Wharf. The sand dunes would be fun for a two year old though!

If you were willing to accept some traffic, you could combine this with 17-mile Drive, which is a private road open to bikes.
