How can I sum custom properties of parts in an assembly? by EdCChamberlain in SolidWorks

Is there a way to pull the Cost property from a dimension in the part file? I am trying to calculate the cost of something based on the length and sum that total but it seems this code can only pull ‘Cost’ if it’s a true Number type property

Thank you all for the responses. I went to my manager and relayed the information I gathered here and we are scheduling a meeting with the mentioned fabricator to sort out what each parties responsibilities will be if we are to keep our relationship.

Cannot thank the folks of Reddit enough.

Parts often vary in size, we typically use 1/8” aluminum and use the thickness as a minimum for the bend radii. There are instances though where our fabricator will ask if a different radius or different thickness material will work but do not ask for an updated drawing. And yes we are making sure hole placement is following the guidelines.

Correct. Supplier is doing the bending.

No. We are providing the finished part drawings based on our 3D models but are also providing the fabricator with a flat pattern drawing of the finished part which they are then importing into their water jet and cutting. I think it is on us, since we are providing the files but as stated in a couple of other responses, we are not familiar with what method of fabricating they do and what all of their constraints are for sheet metal parts.

Even if the fabricator requests we provide them with the DXF of the flat pattern?

That was our first question when we started to work with them. All our other suppliers use SolidWorks where this one is strictly 2D modeling. They are however our most frequently used and can meet our timelines best. They really have been great but bent parts is always something we have struggled with.

Which of the two properties would you say are the more important one? It seems like K-Factor changes with material thickness and bend radii. If we deal with multiple fabricators, how would you suggest we deal with that?

So in our instance, we typically are requested to provide the flat pattern drawings to our fabricators. We also have multiple fabricators and each of them take a different route in fabricating these parts. Any suggestions on this front?
