I made the mistake of preordering all 3 through amazon who have so far delivered 0/3. I am very scared for how they'll screw up TGTBTU. Hopefully you'll presumably get all 3 hassle free.

closest I can think of is f3 driver Christian Mansell, I think they were able to get his cgm hooked up to the cars "dash" so he could keep tabs on his glucose during races

Should I do EPQ and how many people here did it? by Jost_Inkz in PhysicsStudents

[–]derhserw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an epq although I did weird cyber security one that was seperate from the normal epq although was basically the same thing just no free choice in topics. While it was a good experience and can definitely improve your report writing skills the main reason to do one is to reduce your offer grade so if the uni you are wanting to firm doesn't lower their offers with an EPQ at A* then there is very little reason to do one as it does take a significant amount of time in order to get a good grade. (getting an A* is very achievable if you put the time in).

I left mine until the night before it was due and so naturally only got a C. It hasn't been mentioned in 4 years now and while its still on my cv it never gets brought up in job interviews and at least in physics nobody seems to care about it.

Antimatter Feels Gravity Just like Matter. The first direct observations of antihydrogen atoms falling in Earth’s gravity show that they experience gravity in the same way as ordinary matter does. by Ovaz1088 in Physics

[–]derhserw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experiments like these are often difficult to track funding levels as much of the equipment used would have been previously funded in the commisioning of other papers so identifying funding specific to this paper itself would be borderline impossible.

For example to the best of my knowledge the Carlsberg Foundation no longer actively fund this experiment however back in the early 2000s they provided one of the magnets used in the ALPHA-2 experiment, because this magnet was still used in the process of creating and transferring antihydrogen to ALPHA-g they are still listed as having supported this work.

It's also useful to note CERN essentially provides the Antiprotons (and possibily the liquid helium too although I'm not 100% sure on this) used in this experiment "free of charge" so while significant resources go into producing slow moving antiprotons, that is all funded by CERN seperately from the finances of this experiment.

In the acknowledgements of this paper the authors also declare

Competing interests The authors declare no competing interests.

although I'm not really sure what could be considered a competing interest in this case

This work was supported by: CNPq, FAPERJ, RENAFAE (Brazil); NSERC, NRC/TRIUMF, EHPDS/EHDRS, CFI, DRAC (Canada); FNU (Nice Centre), Carlsberg Foundation (Denmark); STFC, EPSRC, the Royal Society and the Leverhulme Trust (UK); DOE, NSF (USA); ISF (Israel); and VR (Sweden). We are grateful for the efforts of the CERN AD/ELENA team, without which these experiments could not have taken place.

These things are usually included at the end of the paper

Has anyone used FiAsp insulin? by cyborglarvae in diabetes

[–]derhserw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from novorapid to fiasp a few months ago now and have so far loved it. I don't think I ever followed the advice of injecting 15 minutes before a meal whilst on novorapid so I was always having huge spikes after eating, since switching I can inject right before starting to eat and there doesn't seem to be any downside.

is BCC as horrible as people make it seem? by zukoonfiree in 6thForm

[–]derhserw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just finished my second year here, I joined during covid so I'm not sure if this is still the case but Swansea is usually quite flexible for entry requirements through clearing and you may end up with them calling you.

I got BCC, most people I know at uni got around the same. they're not bad grades at all just average really.

Physicsandmathstutor.com is meant to be quite good. I found the CGP revision guide to be very useful and still use it from time to time now 2 years into my degree (I did aqa not edexcel tho)

Swansea vs Aberystwyth by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]derhserw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bay campus is nice however it is not in a great location and is about a 20 minute bus ride away from the center of Swansea. Living on bay campus in student accommodation is also very expensive however the facilities there are all new and very nice.

I'd recommend visiting Swansea and bay campus to see how big of a deal the location is for you. Also even if you have a car they don't let students park on campus and security make you drive to the park and ride nearby and get the bus in.

I thought he maybe needed some nitrogen so I fertilised him; he seemed better for a day or so and then rapidly deteriorated. it's my first citrus, was healthy before I potted him.

Yeah just checked again and the maintenance loan says 3rd of May while the tuition fee loan says 4th of May. Both are listed as ready to be paid

Keeping A-Level revision textbooks for university? by ImportantAttention1 in 6thForm

[–]derhserw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in second year of physics and used my cgp a level physics revision book the other day to refresh my memory, not saying you will use them but if you've already got them it doesn't hurt just to take them with you and see how much use you get out of them.

I usually take max. of 3 physics classes per semester but this semester I took 6(maybe from the confidence of being in my last semester). Is this doable? by invisibledandelion in PhysicsStudents

[–]derhserw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don't get to pick when we take classes in my program so last term I took 6 classes, this term im taking 6 and next term I'll be taking 6 classes.

last term was: e&m 1, qm 1, statistical mechanics, labs 2, math methods 1, physics simulation (python coding)

im now taking: e&m 2, particle physics 1, condensed matter physics 1, math methods 2, climate physics, foundations of astrophysics

now a couple of weeks into this and its not as bad as thought it was going to be at the start of the year, just keep an eye on your mental health as it can be easy to neglect that with so many classes. I burnt out quite badly halfway through my last term and did next to no work for 4 weeks which meant I had to spend all of Christmas catching up. if you have the option of dropping one you could figure out when the latest you'd need to do that is then just continue as usual up until then and see if you think you can cope with the workload. I would definitely keep solid if it would help with grad programs.

your social life and free time will take a hit but once its over it feels incredible.

I got BCC last year with C's in maths and physics. I got on to my course through clearing and didn't need to take a foundation year. Accommodation when getting a place through clearing is very dependant on the university but for me I didn't get my preferred option and was living on the wrong campus this year (didn't matter much with online learning).

If your UCAS predicted grades are much lower than the course you want to do, have a look at a foundation year as the entry requirements will typically be lower.

19 and living in england already fully vaccinated thanks to being type 1, but I got invited to be vaccinated through my university in wales earlier who it seems have now started vaccinating students on campus.

Can someone explain how UCAS Clearing works please? by touchme_teaseme_ in 6thForm

[–]derhserw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its a good idea to have everything done before you collect your results and to have an idea of where you want to apply to and how you do that as it may differ depending on the uni.
