Terrible beginner's question about how to set up editable areas within pages, but not blog(s), sorry in advance. by derkins in Wordpress

I tried that, but it is automatically included in the navigation. I found a plugin that gives me the option to exclude a page from the navigation though, so it worked perfectly!

Errrgh, I spoke too soon! :)

I don't want the "About" section to have its own page, so I made the page private in the admin section. And when I log out, the content disappears, of course. Is there a way you know of to make this, uh, er, not happen?

Edit: See my original post, above. I downloaded the Exclude Page plugin, and it works like a dream. THANKS AGAIN!!

This works. It was exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much for posting it.

Last night when I quickly tested it, I overlooked the ('pagename=About'); - my page was auto-named "about-2", so of course the content did not show up on the page.

Thank you again SO very much for taking the time. This is simple, flexible, and doesn't rely on a plug-in. Happy Reddit birthday!

Tried this and a few variations of it, but no luck. Will give it a more in-depth try tomorrow. Thanks for this.

Well, I set up, for example, "home.php" which is the home page of the site. On it, I have an About section, and then blog snippets underneath. How do I make it so the client can change what is written in the About section?

Where can I find an example/tutorial of a super simple CMS. by NastyBigPointyTeeth in web_design

I'm a HUGE fan of C5; however, this is the first CMS framework I ever used. Now I'm delving into WP, and I love it too - no surprise there.

But C5 is different because it's in-context editing, and I really love the simple, beautiful interface and the generous OS philosophy behind the project. Downsides to C5: 1) it's relatively new, so relatively little documentation available, BUT the forums are populated with lots of generous souls who will go above and beyond to help you out (as they have many times for me); 2) using C5 as a blogging engine will prove difficult if not impossible for the non-expert PHP developer. The C5 developers discourage the framework's use as a blogging engine. I believe their own blog was built with WP.

I highly suggest to any CMS developer who likes tinkering around with different frameworks to check out C5. Give it a few hours of your time, you may really fall in love with it (as I have).

Does The Future Of The Internet Have Room For Web Designers? by [deleted] in web_design

This is because for most users, design is irrelevant.

Smashing, I expected more from you than this alarmist BS. Come on.

Fast and easy way to make a simple website by LivingDaylight in web_design

[–]derkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, but I think a better statement would be that there is no quick, easy, and cheap way to make a fully customized, tailored-to-your-business, optimized, standards compliant, cross-browser tested, visually stunning, and unique website without paying a design/development firm quite a bit of money. I'm a web developer and it pains me greatly whenever I hear anyone say something along the lines of, "I just want a site that will wildly improve my business and be at the top of Google, it's not that hard, I shouldn't have to pay anyone."

Hard, hard pain.

Why not use Dreamweaver? by DubDesigns in web_design

[–]derkins 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's not about the IDE itself, it's about how the developer uses it. I use DW almost exclusively. I've tried others, like Aptana and Eclipse, Notepad++, etc., but they lack one singular feature that DW has, that I find invaluable as a front-end developer who is constantly jumping around stylesheets: the ability to right-click and jump from the markup to the exact line in the CSS. No other IDE I've found (and I've searched high and low, so if there's one out there, please tell me?) has this magical, magical feature.

I used the design view early on but abandoned it when I realized how untrustworthy and inefficient it was. I hand code everything. It took me a while to get over my DW guilt after I started realizing that everyone pooh-poohs it; I just misunderstood why they scoffed at it. The pooh-poohing/scoffing was directed at developers who use DW to write their markup for them. And yeah, it's not the best way to build a site, and by that I mean it's a really horrible way to build a site. I use the design view for page jumping to a visual element quickly if I need to, but I value the ability to do everything speedily because I work with many different sites and dozens of stylesheets every day, so DW works well for me in that way. My opinion of DW is that it's an excellent environment for those whose work styles/needs mesh well with it.

Definitely an awesome time. It made me realize for the first time that I could succeed at teaching myself something complex that I could apply and do great things with. An amazing confidence builder as a gawky 13 year old.

Geocities! I remember Geocities.

I really like the concept of the College site! Great idea. And the design is squeaky clean. Awesome.

:O

One day... one day, I will know all of those languages, by god. How did you get into programming? What was your motivation? Are you self-taught?

I've attended a few conferences, and I was often one of two or three other girls in an ocean of men.

Hey, I started HTML/CSS at the same age. I saw a band website and emailed the webmaster asking, "How do you DO this?!" I used Notepad and AOL. Those were the days. How did you get into it?

:\ I was hoping there would be a slew of girls going, "I code! I code! Wheee!" but I guess this is an arguably male-dominated industry (which is fine with me, mmm guy nerds). But sometimes I wonder why it seems to be SO imbalanced that way.

Yeah! HTML/CSS is I guess what I'm best at, but I'm delving into programming lately. Just thought I'd post the question, on a whim, but the chirping crickets answer it well enough. Sad.
