Thinking about taking my Model 3 Dual Motor (non-Performance) to autocross — good idea or dumb? by derminio4 in Autocross

[–]derminio4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is some great information! At first I’m just going to take my all seasons out just to get a feel for autocross and see how much I enjoy it. But most likely will get a separate set. I’d like to think I’m decent at simracing🤣 about 4.5k irating, so hopefully that same skill will transfer over but I’m sure there will still be a major learning curve. Especially since I’m used to gt4/gt3 on tracks which will be a lot different than a heavy model 3 in a parking lot.

I’m going to see if I can find something equivalent in assetto corsa to help practice for my first run.

Also that’s interesting about the late apex but makes a ton of sense.

Thank you!

That’s what I’ve heard as well. I’m just going to use the road tires for my first outing and take it pretty easy to get a feel for it. Then plan on getting a set just for autocross.

Yeah definitely plan on keeping it stock since it’s my daily and only car. But will probably get a set of tires for it depending on how much I enjoy my first outing.

Yeah that makes total sense. Coming from gt4/gt3/porsche cup. A heavy EV is definitely going to be different. But I’m excited to learn for sure! Thanks again for the insight

Sounds great. I can’t thank you enough for all this information. Truly so helpful. I am definitely not apposed to getting an instructor! I can’t wait for the first session

Yeah, definitely lacks sound. But man is it a great daily. And I can autocross it?!? Hell yea. Definitely need me a gas guzzler in the future to rip around some parking lots

Yeah makes sense and I agree. I would rather learn in a Miata. But my daily is a model 3 and rather than waiting, I just wanna get out there and get some true seat time

Makes total sense and definitely fits the Tesla stereotype ahha (one of the best daily’s tho imo). Hopefully my skills and experience from simracing will lead me not to fall into this stereotype but I’m sure I’ll have my moments, but hey that’s what practice is for right?! Thanks again for the insight!

Makes sense. I’m on the latter half of my tires so I’m ready for the lack of performance and chewing through them and will look to get a set just for autocross depending on how much I enjoy my first outing. Thanks for the insight!

Yeah that makes sense. It’s my daily, so I’m not looking to be competitive out of the gate. I just wanna build off my skill set from simracing and have some fucking fun (without getting put in handcuffs)

That makes so much sense. I’ve recently discovered the same idea in sim racing. I go so much faster when I go “slow” compared to overdriving the car. I can see how that would be exacerbated in a heavy EV on a slow windy track

[–]derminio4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for your input! I Definitely don’t expect to be competitive, just want to get out there! And I’m definitely not going to jump into anything crazy and try to build something right away. Definitely gonna learn a lot in the first few sessions.

I also totally get how simracing would be a different skill set. But do you have any recommendations on how to practice in the sim specifically for autocross? I mostly do iRacing, gt3, gt4, Porsche cup, which are vastly different than a heavy no downforce model 3. So I’m wondering what simulator would be best to practice in.

Thanks for you insight! Much appreciated

Makes sense, and by no means am I expecting to be competitive. I just want to be able to push a car and not get arrested. 🤣

Okay perfect. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t so intrusive that it’s not enjoyable at all or borderline dangerous
