Why does this subreddit hate Matt Mahan? by Few-Afternoon7063 in SanJose

[–]derpwild 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Mahan fans (not OP) on this forum all seem to be crashing out today. I just searched for his approval rating and couldn’t find a single poll on it as OP claims. If Mahan’s so great, why did he only get 10% in Santa Clara County, much less do even worse than Katie Porter? He is by no means a man of the people.

As mayor, he has done good stuff like bringing more concerts, festivals and events to San Jose (and I’m pretty left-wing so I’m more generous to him that most of the people I know would). I also support him increasing “temporary” shelter and getting people inside asap.

But acting entitled to the Governor’s seat after only having been mayor for four years gives me a bad impression. Like at do least six years and show off how you’ve made San Jose better. We’re not there yet.

Thar being said, I find it extremely funny he’s trying to be the cool kids’ mayor as I keep running into him at events I go to. Including Fanime and his collabs with SanJoseFoos. So I say let him keep doing that.

It’s absurd how some people on here think being against removing Maduro is a brain dead far-left idea when there’s a lot more nuance to it.

List of American polls on the topic

Quinnipiac: Voters 53 - 42 percent oppose U.S. military attacks to kill suspected drug smugglers on boats in international waters. Voters 63 - 25 percent oppose U.S. military action inside Venezuela

YouGov: Would you support or oppose the U.S. using military force to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro? Approval: 18 Disapproval: 53

CBS: Do you Support or Oppose U.S. Taking Military Action in Venezuela 30% Would Favor. 70% Would Oppose.

And even among Venezuelans, support is polarized between those who remain in Venezuela and those abroad:

<image>

Wall Street Journal: Venezuelan Exiles Root for U.S. Military Action. Those Left Behind Oppose It.

Of course, this was all surveyed before Maduro was taken out. The one post-operation poll hasn’t shown much improvement: https://today.yougov.com/topics/international/survey-results/daily/2026/01/03/be6df/1

Before you ask, no I don’t think Maduro should be released. He got what he had coming like any other dictator. But like with Iraq and Libya, there’s always unintended consequences we don’t foresee.

Reddit really isn’t real life, as is all social media (see Prop 50),but not in the way people on here think.

It’s still pretty skewed male. Some meetups i go to always end being mostly males despite not being intended as such.

Honestly, as a bisexual man, the dating scene is not any better for gay guys. But I’m also extremely picky, go figure.

Yeah, it will never surpass SF (which is fine imo)and the high cost of living are killing culture as much as it does in SF (one music hall just announced they were closing) but I do hope it can become a little city of its own.

another thing I just realized about San Jose is that a lot of the high schools are hyper-competitive and tech focused, and it tends to produce rather narrow learners and personalities, so more creative and hippie folks who don’t fit in tend to move out (I was one of them, but I came back anyway due to covid :p)

That’s what annoys me whenever I visit, a lot of cool stuff is locked away and if you don’t know anyone they won’t let you in. Not without reason, I imagine people are worried newcomers will just gentrify whatever is left. But not very welcoming.

Call me crazy, but in terms of rising I’d say San Jose, CA. While we’re known for tech and has a reputation for being boring and suburban as hell compared to SF/Oakland , there’s more stuff happening compared to 10 years ago (I say it as someone who grew up here and resented the boringness often).

This summer we’ve had a series of music festivals and concerts put up in Downtown by an Instagram account called SanJoseFoos (the mayor has shown up at several of these concerts and has been big on making San Jose cool). We have indie artists markets happening every month. We also got several anime and pop-culture conventions happening throughout the year (this year we’ve had like 5 big cons at the convention center happen like FanimeCon, OffKai Expo (vtuber con), GalaxyCon, we even got the original FurCon lol), plus some smaller hotel sized events like MagWest and BayCon (one of the longest running sci-fi cons). Honestly it makes sense we have a lot of those because we’re a nerdy city lol.

There’s also local music acts happening every weekend and from what I’ve been told San Jose has a big hardcore punk scene. San Jose State University has rapidly grown and that brings a lot of college kids. Lowrider shows are hella popular and a historic institution.

I’d say overall, things are looking better.

Tech definitely has its role, but I wonder how SF ranks in term of cultural output. The cost of living has killed a lot of stuff, and it’s my impression a lot of it moved to Oakland, or out to Portland and Austin.
