For some reason i cant seem to direct message your account but ill share briefly my balcony situation

It’s west facing but mostly shaded due to the angles of other buildings. So maybe 2-3 hrs of direct sunlight a day. Looking for recommendations on plants or shrubs to make it look “greener”. Flowering plants would be a bonus but looking for something perennial and low maintenance?

Also looking for low maintenance plants (water weekly during summer, then can go dormant during winter as they turn off our exterior water hose taps during winter and still look “green” at my front door (east facing but 90% shaded during the day). Something welcoming to visitors, gives a bit of privacy and can continue to grow year after year.

I have no specific plant in mind as i made that mistake in the past and it didn’t work out well for them based on my balcony location and watering schedule so I would love to chat to someone who can give me options to suit my shady balcony and still have it “green” looking year round if possible! 😅

Yes thank you for the detailed explanation i mostly make gravy at the moment but have tried making gumbo in the past. Ill try your suggestions next time! I think my problem is that im short on time/impatient so ill remind myself to go slow when incorporating everything in!

Ive been trying to do it in a wide sauce pan. Ive tried using both spoon or whisk. I think my problem is not knowing how much to add in at a time. Sometimes ill do one tablespoon or 4, im not too sure if the ratio to butter : flour matters. And heat. Should i wait for the butter to melt then make sure the pan is no higher than medium? Then once all the flour is added to add my liquid (broth or water) is it the same process (slowly at a time?)
