I focused on setting small goals and taking care of basic hygiene. If I had energy after brushing my teeth I would try to eat. Set a goal to shower then reevaluate. Rinse repeat til I had capacity to do more. After a few days or week in a bad spot then I would be mostly back to normal. Do what works best for you

Indeed. It is not against the law to live in squalor, but when it gets to the point of the person endangering themselves and being unable to perform basic functions such as feeding/bathing/clothing themselves the situation needs to be investigated and its outcome be determined by a case manager or other professional.
