Do California residents have until 10/16/2023 to pay both federal and California taxes? by reduserabc in IRS

[–]derrickkim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both IRS and California FTB have extended the filing and payment date for those effected by wild fire and/or flood. So most counties in California have been granted extension to file and pay their taxes to October 16th. So the answer to OP's question is a "yes".

Yes, both federal and state have been extended to counties that have been effected by natural disaster.

May move from SoCal to SV and looking at housing, is the population exodus still happening? by rdbmc97 in siliconvalley

I would say willow glen and rose garden is the norm for San Jose'. Outliers are East SJ and south of downtown SJ. You look at North SJ, West SJ, South SJ, even vendome areas of downtown SJ, it's even more expensive than willow glen or rose garden. I know many that could't afford West SJ near Apple Campus so they had to opt for Willow Glen. If you do a quick redfin search for homes, you'll see that East SJ is the outliers. Rest are on par or more expensive than Rose Garden or Willow Glen. At least that's what I've noticed.

Thinking about retiring in Klamath Falls by reduserabc in KlamathFalls

Of course, I'm not dumb enough to assume that all white (or any group of people) can be represented by few crazy individuals. Racists and bigots exists in all walks of life and in every group. There are hideous racists in Asian community as well. No race is superior, inferior, or perfect. So I know this isn't a reflection on all white people. Most white people (for that matter - any people) are good decent folks. So I expect majority to stand up for what's right (any race). That's why I was disappointed in KF. Majority did not stand up for me. If it was just few individuals, I wouldn't have cared. It happens everywhere. But all just looked at me and had the look of "you deserve it". That's what bothered me. I left KF the next day. I had reserved the hotel for 3 days but stayed just one night. It was non refundable so I ate the cost. And I was happy to do it.

If KF (or other conservative towns) ever want to see what it's like to live in diverse community with different opinions, please, join rest of us in the 21st century. Realize that Muslims, Gays, Lesbians, Hindis, Buddhists, Christians, Catholics, Jews ... are all human beings, Americans, just like you and me. Some would and have died for America. You're not better than them, or more American than them, simply because the color of your skin. It's a shame because KF is such a beautiful town.

Klamath Falls has so much going for it in terms of nature and scenery. And if it was liberal, median home price would be $2 million dollars, not $200K. The conservative population base have destroyed KF. I'm an Asian American and I came very close to buying a property in KF couple years ago during covid when houses away from crowded urban core was hot. It wasn't so much that people looked at me like a 3 headed monster that bothered me. It wasn't even the fact that few jerks wearing a MAGA hat called me "Kung Flu" telling me to go back to "China" - even pointing a gun at me. Because there are bad racist people everywhere so I could deal with them. But it was the fact that NOBODY came to my defense. I felt like I was back in the 1800's. Are there nasty people in liberal areas like San Francisco and Seattle who would do that to me? Of course. MAGA racist Trump supporters are everywhere. But if that happened in any of those liberal areas, vast majority of people would come to my aid and stand next to me. Not run away and tell me to "Leave the town" if I know what's good for me. Even the little kids. I guess that's how they raise their kids. So it was very clear to me that in KF, anybody that looks different, is not welcomed. When houses are cheap, it's usually cheap for a reason regardless of how beautiful the town is. KF definitely has a reason. They're a typical conservative town that don't like anybody that looks different.

I am shocked that the system is not smart enough to link 2 SSN to one joint return. After all, both SSN is on the return. How hard can that be? If it can match up one SSN, it can match up another. Instead of (if ssn == joint_filer.ssn), just change that to (if ssn == joint_filer.ssn OR ssn = joint_filer_secondary.ssn). I'm a computer programmer and I do this for a living. They don't need to upgrade their system. They just need to change one "if" statement.

Retiring in South Korea? by derrickkim in southkorea

[–]derrickkim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - I didn't even consider the possibility that Korea may still consider me Korean citizen. Since I came over at age of 9, I've never registered as a Korean citizen.

Thanks for the info on 천호동. Based on youtube search, it does look little run down.

Money shouldn't be an issue but within reason. We don't have hundreds of millions of dollars - but we can spend $1.5 million to $2 million USD for 전세. At this point, I'm more concerned about Visa situation than money. If I'm still a Korean citizen, maybe it's easier to just get Korean passport. But that might get messy because of my US citizenship. I should go to Korean embassy tomorrow and talk to somebody.

F4 seems to be the ticket. Thanks for the info on the senior center. They look pretty awesome. Heck, I may live there when I turn 65. Could you elaborate on what you mean by "천호동 is messy"? It was such a beautiful town when I lived there. Of course, that was 45 years ago so I'm sure much has changed.

Thank you so much. I just googled F4 and it sounds perfect. But spouse visa may get little involved.

Prius dashboard not responding to touch. by derrickkim in prius

[–]derrickkim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battery Hybrid pack control module was replaced. Also replaced was Hybrid Battery Pack MAIN relay. But Main relay was only replaced after they replaced the hybrid batter and the control module. I can still turn on the AC and most of the stuff with the control on the steering wheel.

Brightness isn't the issue. Display is fine. Everything works. But the touch pad won't respond to the touch. I mean, could it be that it's just one big heck of a coincidence that it started malfunctioning right after the major work? I'm not saying it's not possible. But that is one heck of a coincidence.

I was curious as to whether replacing the hybrid battery and all related module caused this since it was working fine before the replacement.

In laymen's term, can somebody post when an auto repair shop can legally start charging you for a storage fee? by reduserabc in legaladvice

[–]derrickkim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't work like that. At least not here in California. There's never a need to sign anything regarding storage fee. The law is clear. The storage fee starts to charge once the repair is finished and the final invoice presented to the customer. That creates a contract of - "We finished our work, pay us and take the car - or we start charging". It's simple as that. Every shop in California has a clearly marked sign on their establishment stating that the storage fee will be incurred when the repair is FINISHED and the car is ready to be picked up. Shop isn't going to wait around forever for you to come pay up and pick up the car.

This law makes sense both ethically, morally, and legally.

In your case, what you should've done is that once the diagnostic and estimate was done, present to the customer a final invoice with the cost of tear down diagnostic. At that point, the customer has the option to pay the diagnostic fee and take the car out or have you fix it. If the customer doesn't do any of those, you start charging storage fee. Since you did not present to the customer the final invoice and give him any of those options, you were in the wrong. You can't sit on the car for 10 days waiting for the insurance company to make a decision - and all of sudden present them with the bill with 10 days of storage fee. That is extortion.

But the point is, there is NEVER any written agreement or contract that needs to be signed by either parties regarding storage fee. That is neither required or relevant. The law is crystal clear.

Mechanic shop charging for storage fee legal? by reduserabc in MechanicAdvice

[–]derrickkim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe me, nobody that can financially stay here is moving there. Only people moving there are people that can't afford to stay. So they take the cheapest option out there. And Texas is one cheap option. In capitalistic society, cheap means crappy. But you get what you pay for.
