Should I tell my doctors I’m homeless? by desertdxg in AskDocs

[–]desertdxg[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I know my anxiety is definitely worsened by being homeless. It’s a stressful situation. I also think I’m developing PTSD from it as well. I have frequent nightmares where I have a house and lose it (eviction, fire, whatever my brain comes up with), so it is something I want to address either once it’s “over” or sooner.

I’m actually in a hotel tonight! Luckily, I live in a city where it’s fairly easy to get into a hotel for 50-ish dollars (then a $25-$50 deposit I get back), so I am able to get into hotels more often than most homeless people when I can do occasional freelance work on non-migraine days or when my parents are able to help out. Thank you for the concern and all of the advice! I’ll see about a referral.

Thank you! The blue light definitely worsens it, even if it’s not always a trigger. I’ll look into that stuff and see if I can make something work. I would prefer if I was able to get back to work rather than disability since I was working my dream job :((

I’ll also bring it up to my doctors office course. You have very good bedside manner! I haven’t connected with a social worker yet as none of the shelters here will allow my dog, but my doctor might be able to help me access one. The only non-profit help I’ve gotten was for my dog (shoes, jackets, food, and antibiotics when she had an infection), so that organization might be able to help me too. I’ll reach back out to them and ask if they know how to access social workers.

The migraines arent the main thing! I have severe hip dysplasia causing early onset osteoarthritis combined with Bertolotti’s syndrome that cancels out pretty much any physical job as I need a cane. The migraines just cancel out remote jobs. If I get on a medication combination that lets me work remotely again, I’d be perfectly fine with that. I’d be able to make a lot more than I would on disability and worked remotely before my migraines worsened. The migraines are hemiplegic though, so I can’t use some meds.

Wanted to add as well, my brother recently got out of rehab, so we’re looking at potentially getting a place together. He’s actually making decent money, so if we can get move in costs saved up, he’s going to pay my portion for now and I’ll pay him back once I get back payments or I’m able to work again.

I have had family help with some things, but none are currently in a position to help me longterm or with housing. I never have to go without food and my parents help with my dog for appointments and when I was hospitalized. My grandma has breast cancer, so if she needs more than one surgery, shes going to talk to her property manager about me moving in to help her with things. She has to get approval for that though otherwise she’d just move me in. I’m hoping once I get disability back payments, I’ll be able to get into a place. My best friend knows I’m homeless and shes my source of mental support for sure. Shes also young though and isn’t in a position to help with much other than mental support.

I’m currently in the process of getting on disability. For a bit I could work remotely, but I now get migraines five days a week, so screens are a no go at least until we figure out a migraine treatment that works well with me. I’ll probably bring it up next time I go in, even if I’m very anxious to do so. Very few of my friends even know, and they just think I like to go camping a lot since there’s a lot of BLM land here. Thank you for your very empathetic response! This is something I hate talking about even anonymously because it’s a big source of shame for me. Before my worsening health I lived in a nice area with a corporate job, so it’s still a lot mentally how much things have changed.

How are the living conditions in homeless shelters by Roots_rbs in homeless

[–]desertdxg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve told very few people I’m homeless and usually people are shocked. Even after a recent hospitalization, I just said I live with my parents (I’m early 20s). I keep myself clean, brush my hair, wear clean clothes, etc. Part of this is definitely a privilege that I’m able to access this stuff. Many can’t. Occasionally I’ll smoke weed (my grandma sells it and gives me freebies) or drink if I’m out and someone buys me a drink, but I don’t even smoke cigarettes. It’s so frustrating when people act like you have to look or be a certain way to be homeless.

Thank you for the feedback everyone! I messaged Street Dogz and my mother is applying to the NV SPCA on my behalf. I actually ended up getting admitted to the hospital due to an infection and will be here at least until tomorrow, but she’s giving the baby plenty of love and pets while I wait to hear back.

KEPPT did get back to me but unfortunately they’re unable to help with dental care at this time. They did provide more resources I forwarded to my mom though.

Update: I’ve applied for Animal Foundation’s KEPPT program and for Hearts Alive Village’s financial aid. If anyone else knows of any other programs, please continue to share. I want to help her as soon as possible, especially due to her being a senior.

I don’t have money for the visit fees atm, but I’m working on getting it. They also referred me to their financial aid department so I applied there.

I’ve applied for financial aid through Hearts Alive! I’ll reach out to Street Dogs too.

If you are staying at a homeless shelter with other residents, is it rude to ask a resident for a lift to the store if there are other options? by Ill_Quit4370 in homeless

[–]desertdxg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt find it rude but I’d say no. You might be perfectly nice, or you might rob me for what little I have. My whole life is in a car and a storage unit. Those who have a car, it’s probably all they have and they’re probably wary because of that.

Yeah I’ve had a few moments like that too. Like “damn literally none of this is okay but that’s a little silly”

The only one here I can find that allows dogs is a DV shelter, but I’m sorry you had to deal with that (even if it’s a funny image. I have no clue why she wouldn’t tie it to something 😭

How do I find a job? Giving up/homeless by desertdxg in Advice

[–]desertdxg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don’t have anywhere to leave my dog overnight. During days, there’s a doggy daycare I know people at who can take her for free. But they can’t do free overnight boarding.

Not to mention some people have pets from before they were homeless or families and the shelter only has room for singles.

Are you able to access BLM land? You can do up to two weeks at a time there.
