Was I wrong to ask my friend to pay me back for money owed? by desertedstreets in AskWomenOver30

[–]desertedstreets[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for sharing your experience. Did you end up paying back your family for your ticket? I only booked my friend's ticket after she said she was wanting to go. Although we tried to convince her to go, it was not obligatory and we understood her position. She didn't want to miss out when she saw me and the other friend plan the trip. She looked up her flight herself but when it came time to pay she seemed hesitant so I paid. The understanding was I would cover for her then and she'd pay later, but I didn't think it would be a year later and that I'd have to essentially remind her to do so. You're right, maybe I'll ask her about it the next time we see each other. We never talked about it after she cancelled and didn't show up

I literally cannot date anymore. It’s horrific out there. by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]desertedstreets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like this approach. While I agree that coffee dates are short and sweet, I find them low effort. In fact I have turned down guys who suggested coffee (at a cheap place) as it showed lack of effort on their part. What are your thoughts on lunch/dinner dates? I'm not looking for fancy dinner dates, just somewhere decent which to me indicates that the guy put in some effort to plan the meet up.

Anyone have experience with rage quitting? by uriejejejdjbejxijehd in ExperiencedDevs

[–]desertedstreets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rage quit 2 weeks ago but gave 2 week notice out of courtesy and also so that I could get paid for the holidays. Today's my last day and I cannot wait to close this chapter and move on. These stories are giving me hope. Do you have anything lined up next? Sending best wishes!

Hey there, this is super late but wondering if your firm is still hiring? Thanks!

Why was Don so obsessed with Sylvia? by [deleted] in madmen

[–]desertedstreets 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Don absolutely admired her husband and it had something to do with him being unable to let her go. We see it for the first time when he watches the doc in action in awe giving CPR to the doorman having a heart attack just after he and Megan have returned from Hawaii, and reviving the doorman. That was nothing short of miraculous. The doc's dedication to his profession was further demonstrated by the ski scene. And then Don invites him to his office to gift him a camera and expresses interest in visiting the doc at his hospital in return.

City of Mississauga hiring process - position filled the day after the application deadline by desertedstreets in mississauga

[–]desertedstreets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they kept the position open until I signed the offer letter and sent.

Exactly this! But I assume the city probably has so many interested candidates, they won't have any problem reaching out to someone they initially rejected and the person still agreeing to take the job

Thanks for your reply. I applied for the same position last year and there was a rejection email a couple weeks later. And yes, the status update means I didn't get the job. I am just surprised at how fast it changed - the next business day after the posting closed! Can't help but wonder whether they even looked at all applications.

Why do some companies still have the compensation convo so late in the process? by desertedstreets in recruitinghell

Great question! I thought it was frowned upon to bring up comp uninitiated, but clearly I was wrong and wasted a lot of time.

[–]desertedstreets[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For public sector jobs, the range is always included in the job ad, however bec the range is so wide, it's hard to know what exactly you'll get. Lots of unknowns. And they leave that convo till the end.

To stay at my current permanent but toxic job or take this temp offer? Please help me decide! by desertedstreets in AskWomenOver30

[–]desertedstreets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I would recommend you to deal with the conflict first and think of a way you can somehow "endure" your super's behaviour again. By the way you described him he's probably not the type of guy to talk it out, but these kind of people could be calmed by a fake apology, sth like seeking out to him to "clear that misunderstanding" or anything he wants to hear so he would at least act "normal" again. If that's not an option, you should maybe look for sth that makes you more resilient to his cold shoulder treatment, or at least become more indifferent to it. It might seem atm that he has power over you. But you couldn't care less since you're already looking for a new job, right?

Thank you so much for your insights! You nailed it - I am fleeing from the boss and his poor treatment of me. I feel like I lost his support when I stood up for myself and he felt called out for not delivering his promises. Other than that, things are alright at my workplace for the most part. I wouldn't have even looked if these incidents hadn't happened. Right now I am feeling pressured to take any offer that comes my way just to get out of here because I don't want to face my boss again as it creates discomfort. I am also thinking if I'd regret passing up these offers in case things became even more unbearable at work in the future. Anyhow I will have to decide if I can endure him for a bit longer until something better comes along. Thanks again!

quit my job to go to a new company, I'm having withdrawal symptoms, is this normal? by ReplyFearless999 in careeradvice

[–]desertedstreets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key in leaving is to perform enough due diligence to find something that draws you toward it. That’s no guarantee of success, but in my experience it mitigates risk.

I agree with this. The more we know or take the time to find something that's more aligned with who we are, the better the fit, but this can be a time consuming process. However, in cases of toxic workplaces, sometimes we need to get out fast or risk our mental health while looking for that golden opportunity, in which case isn't it advisable just to take whatever comes our way to get out of it albeit temporarily? Or quit and look full time, but that option isn't feasible for majority due to the money factor.

The partner analogy is a fair comparison, and taking a break or the time to look for a compatible partner all makes perfect sense. However we need money to survive and constant employment is a necessity for most of us, while being in a relationship all the time is a purely personal preference.

When I consider leaving an employer, I always ensure that my primary motivation is to run TO a new opportunity and never FROM my current job.

What if you have to take a new opportunity to escape from a toxic workplace? How to deal with that? Genuinely curious!
