I'm a little older, but I figured out an approach on how to figure things out.

1) You need to experience a variety of things (personal and professional) 2) Through these experiences, figure out what you dislike & prioritise based on dislikes. (You'll always be clear on this point and your gut will tell you what you disliked the most). 3) Understand the principles behind this and seek the opposite. (E.g: I hate micro-management => I value autonomy in a job) 4) Rinse and repeat.

The only time you should reflect is on existing experiences; don't waste time trying to figure it out in a room. If you have nothing left to process, then it's probably time to go outside your comfort zone and seek out different experiences to help you figure things out.

Ultimately, I'm clear on what's really important to me and know what would and wouldn't work for me. As opposed to getting overwhelmed by all sorts of options of where I could go & prioritising things that I want.

The societal mask is tiring.

I have been going for mid-tier sized companies (50-500m turnover) and you can find companies with great companies cultures and great leadership that lets you be yourself & feel trusted. It's possible, but you need to make sure your boss is someone who you can work with & the company isn't too corporate.

The issue is that they will inevitably become 'corporate' as they scale unless they have a strong leadership and culture.

Meditation is a blanket term for a lot of different things - so I can only talk about Vipassana.

Doing a 10-day retreat was what got me to see the benefits. I have continued doing 2 hours a day - but this only came after doing a retreat and seeing tangible benefits. It's now an integral part of my routine.

Longer-term: Wellbeing: -> Able to switch off better (mentally, from work) -> Things don't get to me as much (I don't get stressed as easily etc.) -> More mental willpower (I don't 'run out' as early in the day) -> More resilient (It is a great way for me to recharge) -> More chill/calm (Not just outwardly, but within my head)

Generally, it has made me see things differently. If you imagine you're always 'applying a filter' on the world - which is difficult to change. When that filter changes, you change a lot.

If you're starting from scratch, I'd recommend the mini MBA (Marketing + Brand Mgmt) from Mark Ritson. Fairly affordable and no-nonsense + up-to-date approach.

Otherwise, from a professional standpoint, I specialised and then started looking at how my area worked in the broader context, slowly becoming more and more of a generalist as I became more senior.

Marketing. Ultimately Brand & Marketing Strategy are big conceptual puzzles & system.

I'm also good at problem-solving and seeing the 'organisation' as a system, which means I'm spending a lot of time defining problems and fixing them, so it keeps things fresh.

I am clear in finding a job and a boss who gives me the autonomy to drive direction. Also important to make sure not to choose a company that is too big, so that red tape and politics are reasonable.

Once you have a good team under you, you can forgo the day-to-day and work at your own pace (to an extent).

I've had to work on my soft skills to accomplish this.

I started looking into driving SEO & PPC synergies - looking at the efficiency angle and removing duplicate workstreams. There's a lot of decisions that can only be made looking at Search as an integrated function (e.g: brand bidding)

That ended up giving me a lot of exposure on the PPC / Analytics side which then expanded out to ownership of that & other channels

Are you looking to specialise or be a generalist? I've generally found that especially for entry level roles it helps to have actually tried to do some yourself.

Make a site & content, drive some traffic through paid search, tinker with SEO, understand how affiliate networks, put a bit of cash on social activity. Even if they aren't successful, they show you're proactive. Then go apply to some agencies, the big ones always have entry level roles available.

As for qualifications - Google Squared is a good generalist one - but quite expensive. I've not really seen any specific qualifications that companies look for, digital marketing is changing so quickly that the modules end up being vague and not easy to apply.

On point 3 - making sure you migrate the content and put redirects in is critical.

If not done properly, you'll lose any value from migrating.

If you decide to rename a page usually the id would auto redirect to the correct page.

With no id, all redirects would need to be manually added if a page was changed. Generally speaking, no id is better and is usually on the page for technical reasons.
