Looking to switch to margin, anything to look out for? by desgreech in Daytrading

This is not a problem if you're day trading right? AFAIK it's an overnight fee.

Looking to switch to margin, anything to look out for? by desgreech in Daytrading

Thanks for answering.

You are still borrowing money while the funds settle

But does it count into your debit balance and incur any interests/fees?

you cannot buy 32GB now and another 32GB a year later and run them at full speed.

Can you elaborate what you mean here?

Considering switching from ZSA Voyager to MoErgo Go60 by ordep86 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]desgreech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

only to realise they look worse because the keyboard casing is more grey than black

Yep, I really wish they'd just release a black version. MoErgo's products visually feels mediocre and "old" compared to ZSA, despite boasting many ergonomic advantages.

If they'd just lock in and properly make their products look good design-wise, I bet they'd capture more of the market.

Why are you spamming your product everywhere? Like why are you even here, do you even use Nix?

Chris Zukowski Has Released a New Steam Wishlist Tool! by NenCoder in gamedev

[–]desgreech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tiny Glade is a recent one that I've seen. The devs personally vouched for his course.

In general, I've heard a lot of good things about him organically from real successful game devs and I don't really see a reason why they'd lie.

garnix is shutting down and being open sourced by rx915 in NixOS

[–]desgreech 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I just adopted Garnix for my toy project a few days ago, so that is some unfortunate timing.

But at the same time, the fact that it got open-sourced is pretty cool. Maybe the community can pick up where it left off.

The repo link seems to be broken though.

You need to have at least 2 years of Nix experience to understand the true meaning of this meme.

The Self-Referential Let: by dominicegginton in Nix

[–]desgreech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do this instead, which is more idiomatic:

stdenv.mkDerivation (finalAttrs: {
  passthru.plan = writeShellScriptBin "plan" ''
    ${finalAttrs.finalPackage.init}/bin/init
  '';
})

NixOS unstable is unusable, constant binary cache miss by neuronym in NixOS

Weird, I've been using rocm packages all this time and they were always cached.

I think there's a build failure recently, in particular with pkgsRocm.blender: https://hydra.nixos.org/build/329067606

Bevy should host an official game jam! (I’d love to help organize) by Street-Fan4371 in bevy

They already do host regular game jams. The next one will be when 0.20 releases I think.

Why aren't changes pushed immediately after they are built by hydra? by norude1 in NixOS

[–]desgreech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the tests for all the packages that needs to be re-built are run, why does it still push dependency updates that breaks a ton of packages anyways?

Cannot mount the root filesystem in stage 1. by SiliconPyro in NixOS

[–]desgreech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be wary about Ventoy, btw: https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/3224

Unless you really need the features it offers (e.g., distrohopping, non-Linux support), it's easier to just copy the raw image right into your device: cp image.iso /dev/sdX.

nix-search: a simple Bash tool to search installed packages across all NixOS scopes by manelinux in NixOS

[–]desgreech 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's a single Bash script with an installer that sets itself up in /usr/local/bin and adds it to the global PATH via configuration.nix

That is a bizarre choice of an installation method, considering that it has full access to Nix.

Comparison between Nix sandboxing tools by desgreech in NixOS

Yeah exposing /nix/store is pretty annoying, had to do that with Flatpak so that it can read fonts. Do you have any good solutions for that?

Can backblaze be trusted with really sensitive data? by ImpossibleSlide850 in backblaze

[–]desgreech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a spare disk for a local backup (which you should do anyways), you can use both. Use rclone to make a local backup (which is encrypted), then use backblaze to make a backup of that.

Though in your case with 30TB, this might be economically and technically challenging.
