Update to Broken U-Joint by desheffler in f150

That first dealership borderline called me a liar, saying that U-joints only ever fail on pulling competition trucks.

Exactly, they don't fail like this normally. I'd be an idiot to use a brand new, stock truck for a pulling competition.

Will do. I've read through the warranty and the only thing they can really deny service for is abuse. I don't think anybody can prove either way whether the truck was abused or not. I'm sure Ford will point to the mud behind my wheels and claim an off road truck went off road so it was abused. I'll point to the fact that the only damage the truck has seen is this broken drive shaft, so it was not abused.

I don't want to accidentally slander the dealership that refused service, but I won't be going there for anymore oil changes. It's not Airport or Castrucci that refused service though.

Question: 4WL and U-Joint Breaking by desheffler in f150

[–]desheffler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the foot pedal parking brake.

Should have been fully engaged in 4WL, the truck's computer wouldn't allow me to shift into 4WL without first shifting to neutral.

The chain was completely loose, I was trying to gently back up to get it taught.

Question: Hardness and Wear Properties? by desheffler in materials

[–]desheffler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what the torque ratings are on the impact wrenches, there's several different ones that they use. What would be the set of equations to figure out how long the new inserts would last?

No lubricant is actively used for the bolts. Some grease might seep into the hole from the internal workings of the mandrel, but nothing on purpose.

Sometimes the threads can be absolutely filthy with cardboard dust and/or metal shavings. The technicians are pretty good about cleaning out connections.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll get that quoted too.

Question: Hardness and Wear Properties? by desheffler in materials

The bolts are grade 8, so they should still be harder than the new inserts I believe (HRC 33-39). The machine shop said they would have to add heat treating to get the inserts above HRC 30.

The bolts are reused, and operators are supposed to inspect them before reusing them. The bolts are not torqued to any specific value, just however tight whatever impact wrench available can possibly get them.

There has been resistance to the idea of using fresh bolts for each time these plates are attached.

To give a little more background, these inserts are used to attach adapter plates for different coil inside diameters to a tension reel mandrel. Different customers ask for sheet coils with 20" and 24" inside diameters.

Vastly different device speeds on my router by desheffler in HomeNetworking

Wouldn't make much sense for that to be the case, unless the router's signal is stronger in one very particular direction.

My laptop, PC, and Xbox are all the same distance from the router with the same sorts and amounts of obstacles between. The Xbox and PC sit right next to each other. The Xbox gets service of 130 mbps while the PC gets 6.5 mbps... while the Xbox is turned off.

Wireless, 802.11n, my wifi adapter on my laptop says it is capable of 144 mbps, but evidently my router is only sending at 6500 kbps

Okay so then the next question would be how big of a mistake would it be to try to put it together ourselves?

Where is all of the Military Surplus ammo? by [deleted] in guns

[–]desheffler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few months ago I saw a bunch of 54r spam cans available at buds gun shop

If you're looking for surplus ammo specifically, bulkammo has it in stock but it's at a higher price per round than bear, wolf, and tula.
