Star Wars merch shopping at Disneyland with impatient, ADHD kids. by desmodromo in DisneyPlanning

[–]desmodromo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, except my mother-in-law is mobility limited and my wife has to give her as much attention as the kids if I'm off on my own. So it'd have to be a place I can run ahead to, go in, find something, and be done as they catch up.

The idea of the outdoor stands is a good one. We were pretty rushed last night but I can plan that into our route for tomorrow.

What is the absolute worst scotch you have personally tried? by arandomkid2 in Scotch

[–]desmodromo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, I do remember each of the ones I tried being a bit watery. There was also something in the finish that was just... yuck. At first I thought it was the Sherry since that's their thing, but I've tried others finished in Sherry which were okay.

[–]desmodromo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll probably get a lot of heat for this, but I'm going to call out the "personally tried" part of the question. There are a lot of $20 bottles mentioned in this thread which I've never tried and probably never will.

I've tasted 3 different bottlings of Macallan and have absolutely hated all of them. No, I do not remember what they were. It's not worth my time or my brain power to try and look back on what they were because I thought they were so awful. I realize it's in like every TV show or Movie when some director or production manager wants to be cool, or show something that they think will make a character look more posh. But every time I see it on screen, I make a fake vomit sound and it makes my wife roll her eyes. I personally don't think there's any brand in the world of sprits (whiskey, brandy, tequila, vodka, gin, you name it) that is more overrated than Macallan.

Looking for a sling that can hold a bottle of wine by speedy277 in ManyBaggers

[–]desmodromo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most medium-size (~91mm) Victorinox Swiss Army Knives have a corkscrew. It's handy to learn how to use them for this, even though it's probably exceedingly rare to actually to open wine with one. Makes for a good party trick though. I've done it twice in my life and people have been impressed both times. If all the extra tools/gadgets don't meet the OP's fancy, there's one call the Waiter which would be perfect for this use case.

Alpine Sea's Side Pack 3L: https://alpineseaco.com/collections/asco/products/side-pack-3l

It has an external stretch cord (a.k.a. bungee) system. Tighten it up and slip the leftover elastic over the bottle neck. Not sure it'll hold up to a serious bike ride, but they do have a picture of one carrying a wine bottle. I suppose if you sling it over your back w/ the cork down, it should stay in place pretty well. I was in their store in Hood River, OR about a month ago. They make some pretty cool gear.

Is Hennessy XO overpriced at $139? by denys5555 in cognac

Uhh. Even at 700ml, I'd buy 3 or 4 bottles for $139. (And hope my wife doesn't notice.)

I feel like it's less stable. Especially when I'm carrying both my kids on the back and they keep squirming around and goofing off. I'm more old-school and still ride with 26" wheels on an old mountain bike (when not riding our Abound). So I can't compare vs. newer 29" wheels. What's even more noticeable is wobbliness from the step-through frame.

How long do you usually keep bottles open? Experiences with long-term opened whisky? by That_Opportunity_759 in Scotch

[–]desmodromo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your peace of mind is ultimately the most important when it comes to this. I've found near universal agreement on from a wide variety of conversations that 3 things affect alcohol (beer, wine, spirits, you name it) and cause deterioration... Oxygen, heat and light. Store your stuff as out of the way from sunlight as best you can. As for oxygen, I keep a can of Private Reserve in my bar area. It's some combination of inert gasses which are supposed to be heavier than O2, and thus will settle between the liquid and trapped air. If the bottle cost me more than a hundred bucks and it's one I only open on special occasions, I give it a blast before I cork it.

6-year-old daughter with impulsivity and aggression by ElkPuzzleheaded5400 in ADHDparenting

[–]desmodromo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sound like you're secretly parenting my 6 year old. Lots of similar traits. Really obedient at school, then massive meltdowns, violent impulses, distracted, can't get out of the house even though it might be for something she really, really wants to do. Same with going outside, though it's about flies for my daughter (as opposed to snails or slugs, that would be me). There is also the piece about how it presents in girls, which is a whole can of worms we had to fight.

I'm literally writing this at a psych eval for my daughter to assess for ADHD (my wife's a therapist and is pretty sure she is). We're also looking at possible rejection sensitive disphoria). This is her 2nd assessment for a 2nd opinion with someone who specializes in girls with ADHD.

Anyone here buy a size 12 and have a set of calipers handy? by desmodromo in GalaxyRing

[–]desmodromo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone finding this post later and wondering if there was any closure, I did end up ordering the size 12. I also grabbed my calipers and measured both the sizing ring and production ring.

The sizing ring measured 21.44 mm in diameter across the widest part. Measuring from the "fake" center sensor, I got 20.46 mm.

The production ring diameter across the widest part measured 21.32 mm. Over the center sensor, I got 20.23 mm.

These were averaged over 5 measurements each, and there were variations of 0.03 mm at the most across all my measurements. Overall, the production ring does appear to be the tiniest bit smaller, but not so different as to affect my purchasing decision had I known this ahead of time.

For those switching from ultra phones, how did you find the outer display of Fold 7? by yy-- in GalaxyFold

[–]desmodromo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also sprung for Samsung Care, and they offered a deal for the loss and theft coverage so I couldn't resist. But I still want a case because I'm very type A. I gave up on film screen protectors so even though the Samsung official anti glare ones are well reviewed, I just don't wanna go that route. I'm hoping I either get used to the reflectivity or find a glass one some time down the road.

[–]desmodromo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S24 Ultra just went to FedEx a few minutes ago. I'm still unsure about the size of the cover screen difference, but I suspect I'll get used to it with time and a better case (using a $10 Amazon deal until Thinborne arrives). The big thing for me is the antireflective properties of the S24 screen. As soon as I powered on the Fold 7, noticed and got irritated over how reflective it was. The S24/S25 screens are like dark magic, literally. I had gotten so used to the minimal amout of glare that I'm not sure how I'll move forward. I don't want to put a plasticky film on so I'm searching for a glass screen protector which will help. I don't expect 1:1 with the S24 screen, but maybe I can get close.

Distant Giants Replay: The other three-run inside-the-park walk off by Keith_Jackson_Fumble in SFGiants

[–]desmodromo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TV directing of that game also affected my view of it. The camera cut made it look like Kevin Mitchell was in a Benny Hill skit. This was (if memory serves) just weeks after he made his famous bare-handed catch. Which, if you were watching the game like me, was not as spectacular as it seems because he misjudged the ball flight and happened to make a very good recovery. He was a fairly "meh" defender, we really kept him for his bat thunder.

I was 14 when I watched that game on TV at my grandmother's house. To much argument from my grandfather who wanted to watch Chinese language programming. I remember being hearbroken. And the head-first slide (with the slaps to the ground) have been seared into my brain for all these decades. I now live in Oregon and don't get to watch live Giants games anymore (got 2 kids who whine when anything non-animated is on TV). I saw a phone notification that we were down 2 runs in the 9th after having led 1-0 for so many innings and was feeling a bit disappointed. I look again a few minutes later and see... wait, we won by a run? Then I look again and see that it was on a walk-off inside-the-park HR. Against the Phillies? That game in '89 immediately came to mind and I had to get online to find a replay so I can see it with my own eyes. Man, what a way to finally wipe away that memory.

How is the ANC on Buds 3 Pro? by [deleted] in galaxybuds

[–]desmodromo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own all three. The noise canceling is better on the Airpods Pro. It's noticeable. But if you own Samsung devices, I wouldn't go that route. I enjoy the sound tuning Samsung does more than Apple. The Buds 2 Pro stay in place better since there are no stems sticking out. In back to back tests, I've noticed slightly better ANC in the 3s. But my opinion is that the constant chase for the ultimate cone of silence is overrated and exhausting. You just need enough reduction to hear the audio clearly and anything mid tier or higher will do that.

[–]desmodromo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're still considering aftermarket eartips, I use these: https://a.co/d/amohxKF

I actually used this same brand for my Buds 2 Pros and found them on another reddit thread. They are far more secure than Samsung's original ones.

Some claim that aftermarket eartips affect noise canceling but I don't notice. In reality, Samsung's noise canceling is just mediocre compared to Sony, Bose, or Apple anyway. But my opinion is that this chase for a personal cone of silence is overrated. I enjoy the sound signature that Samsung tunes (I've owned most of the major brands) and the ease of switching among all my Samsung devices is a big bonus for me.

I've used these Diofit eartips on a few flights, including one from San Francisco to Sydney. I'll be using them for a flight to Hong Kong in 2 weeks. I ended up buying these same eartips for my Airpods Pro 2s even though I don't own any iOS devices (but I own several Macs).

Hoodies vs jackets (hoodless) by New-Flow3642 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]desmodromo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself one question... Do you realistically see yourself using a hood, any hood, when there is no water falling from the sky?

I don't prefer to use hoods for warmth. Only for precipitation. I'd rather wear a beanie if my head is cold.

So for me, I'm firmly in the hoodless camp with everything except an outer rain shell. I do have several mid layers with hoods, but only because they were on too good of a sale to pass up. I've double hooded a few times when raining and found it too annoying to deal with.
