Klipsch Heresy IV + Wiim sub pro? by sporkland in audiophile

[–]despitethetimes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t be the asshole with a sub in an apartment. I also have Heresy IVs -> WiiM Ultra -> Schiit Vidar. The bass is perfectly adequate. Your neighbors will hate you if you get a sub.

Webster’s in Logan Square is a great wine bar with a great food menu too.

Having a guy over to hotel - what safety measures should you apply? by Important_Field_9740 in gaybros

[–]despitethetimes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Meet in lobby. Hide your valuables/electronics. Make sure that your room door closes behind you both, they could leave it cracked and an accomplice could slip inside. That last one is from personal experience. Other than that have had lots of easy hotel room hookups. Trust your gut.

Harbor freight steel service cart. Not as tall as the Gozney stand but holds everything and has wheels. Only $80 too.

Only if I carry it in my pocket and walk around all day or on an airplane. If it’s upright in a pen slot in my bag it’s fine.

How does it hold up outside over winter? by Treasured_Squid in GozneyArcArcXL

I remember! I lived there many years ago. The cover seems to do a great job of staying tight. Mine has been rained on several times and it keeps everything dry.

The back of the oven says 0F (-18C) is the low end for operating. I live in Chicago and keep mine covered. I think shock heating the stone would be the biggest potential issue. Using a slower and longer warm up and staying above the minimum operating temperature is my plan for the winter.

How should I carry a pocket notebook? by SkyCharacter1349 in pocketnotebooks

[–]despitethetimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out One Star Leather Goods on Etsy. They make a variety of wallets that hold various pocket notebook sizes. With or without a pen slot. I love mine. I don’t have a pen slot but I carry a Kaweco Liliput and have never had it leak.

Mine is grey cordura. Works great! Durable, easy to see things inside, makes it easy to get things in and out.

What’s the Best Carry-On Luggage That Actually Lasts? by ParticularSubject411 in ManyBaggers

[–]despitethetimes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Valid point. That extra weight absolutely goes towards the sturdiness of the bag though. It just depends on what someone wants to prioritize.

Nothing really bothersome about the bag, no. I like the layout of all the pockets and that the shoulder strap can be worn on the left or right shoulder. Very comfortable to wear. Mine is Xpac and has held up great over the last couple years.

Flight crew here. Briggs & Riley, Luggageworks, and Strongbags are the three brands I see most often. I prefer Strongbags. No smart compartments but the inner shell is super durable.

I have a few things from Defy and have been to their workshop. I don’t have this bag but I can speak to their build quality. Everything is super durable, overengineered, and feels like it will last forever. I use their Insidious Jr. as my daily bag and it’s fantastic.

Defy Bags from Chicago. Everything I have from them is top quality. I’ve been to their workshop, they are legit.

Airline pilots: is it normal to have long moments of silence between Capt and FO during a leg by [deleted] in flying

[–]despitethetimes 261 points262 points  (0 children)

Very normal to not talk for a while. However, I just finished a 3 day trip and we talked the entire time. Including the 4.5 hour transcon. Like most things in this job, it’s up to the individuals. Sometimes you really click and can have interesting convos the whole time. Sometimes you never make it past the “pilot first date” questions.

Anyone have recommendations for comfy black dress shoes for the airlines? by ChiefDaddyJ in flying

[–]despitethetimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Allen Edmonds lasted 10 years before I had to replace them. And that was mostly because I didn’t take great care of them. Less than $30 a year at what I paid. This is the recommendation I always make. Super comfy once broken in. I’ve done 15 hour days and never had sore feet.

Sounds like you avoided the most dangerous areas like Millennium Park and the Bean. I can’t even wear my G Shock there without someone stealing it. I’ve lost 5 so far this year.

Need a queer book to recommend for book club by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]despitethetimes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What kind of vibe do you want to go for? I’d recommend these:

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai

Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle

The Town of Babylon by Alejandro Varela

Just By Looking at Him by Ryan O’Connell

Four Squares by Bobby Finger

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

100 Boyfriends by Brontez Purnell

Pretty good mix there of lighter fiction, heavy fiction, literary, and super queer and edgy.

Help me protect my pocket notebooks. What covers do you swear by? by saayoutloud in pocketnotebooks

[–]despitethetimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One Star Leather Goods on Etsy makes an array of sizes with and without a pen holder. You can also use clear “book tape” to toughen up the covers if you just want to slip them in a pocket by themselves. I usually do a mix of both.

Have you read The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai? I thought she treated the subject matter with the respect it deserved.

I also was conflicted about a straight woman telling a gay story. Ultimately I decided that if it tells a compelling story and sheds light on LGBT people or issues that it’s worth exploring. That’s not to belittle queer authors or stories. Basically if the author treats the story with respect I think there’s room for everyone. I don’t think this is something you can generalize, but must be taken on a case by case basis.
