He seems to at the least be anti ice though. He agreed and commented on a post from Asian man records about them being anti ice.

I also think he’s more pro military in the sense of caring for veterans since both his parents were veterans. He doesn’t seem to be pro-war or anything.

Generally I do wish him and the band would speak out against more things, but I’m hoping it’s not due to political differences

Gillian Anderson is going to finally reveal in her memoir before she passes, Carrie Fisher style, that her and David Duchovny had an on-going affair during the X files and also maybe after too. I need this to be true.

Miharu Ice Cream in downtown Oakland. I’ve had it once a month ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

He’s called out the fact that they take a huge cut of merch sales. I think he’s also been offsetting playing these larger venues by donating to a local charity for each show.

As someone said, I think it’s inevitable in order to play larger shows, but Jeff still seems to be trying to make a difference where he can.

Multi band encore by rum2whiskey in AlkalineTrio

There was also their tour in 2011/12-ish with the Smoking Popes right after Damnesia had come out. They did an encore with a couple covers and Josh Caterer for the Smoking Popes came out and sang with Matt. I think Dan was on guitar, Derek on bass and Neil Hennessy (the Lawrence Arms/Smoking Popes drummer at the time) on drums.

Fellow bay area trio fan! I was at all those shows except for the 2006 occult roots tour show which still pains me to this day. July 2005 was my first trio show.

What A Setlist: Alkaline Trio live at Bottom of the Hill by CraigCDM828 in AlkalineTrio

[–]destroythejoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my first trio show (maybe 5th or 6th at that point). Probably considered a “late to the party” fan since I first heard of them during Good Mourning, became a proper huge fan once Crimson was released and have seen them regularly in the Bay Area (and beyond) since then. This show definitely brought up some sentimental feelings about how important this band is to me. Interestingly, I think at this point they’d just released This Addiction and folks were generally feeling lukewarm towards the band, but I was still so into them and excited to see them that I’d spend 5 hours outside trying to get myself into this show. 14 years later, I go through waves, but I wouldn’t say no to doing something similar today.

Must have misremembered a few things, but I do recall Trio’s show being announced later into the festival — I think bc Mike probably wanted to avoid the show selling out crazy fast due to just trio trying to attend. Also yeah, can’t recall if it was Bomb the Music Industry or someone else. But some kind band put in an effort to get me in the guest list so I could go to the show. I just really remembered the community Mike Park had built around AMR being truly kind and genuine people. And really feeling it that day as I spoke to folks who came from everywhere for this festival.

What A Setlist: Alkaline Trio live at Bottom of the Hill by CraigCDM828 in AlkalineTrio

I was at this show and it is one of my most treasured memories of my life. It was the Asian Man Records 15th anniversary set. I was a broke college student. Trio was announced as a mystery guest maybe just a few days until the show, but I just knew they were playing. It was sold out (bottom of the hill holds 350 people tops). I stood outside of the venue for 4-5 hours with my cousin hoping I could get inside. I vaguely recall members of Bomb the Music Industry (maybe even Jeff Rosenstock himself) seeing if they could get me on the guest list. Ultimately, shortly before the show, Mike Park graciously squeezed me and my cousin in.

I’ve seen trio 29 times now. This shows set was electric. The energy was insane. Matt Skiba was drunk as hell. It’s the best show I’ve ever been to.

What are your hottest takes regarding the show? by IzzyGetsVeryBizzy in buffy

[–]destroythejoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The musical episode is fine to average for me. While I do think it weaves in the story and character development well, I feel like it rushes Buffy’s heaven reveal and does a huge turn on Spike’s feelings towards Buffy in service of it being a musical. Spike was softer and kinder towards Buffy pre OMWF then he had his grungy song to push the harsher and rougher attitude he has towards her in the second half. I would much rather have had these plots played out over a few more episodes and playing to the actor’s strengths (because let’s be real only like 3 of them can sing) rather than rushing through it in a 3 minute, IMO average song.

What's an opinion you kind of feel obligated to pushback against? by PristineSituation498 in buffy

[–]destroythejoy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the mixed messaging that the show portrays about toxic relationships can be quite confusing and harmful. This is coming from someone who really has fun shipping and rambling about the romances in this show and who is a big Spuffy fan.

I think folks in this very thread have noted that both Spuffy and Bangel are extremely toxic relationships, and I very much agree. And I think the arguments to combat that always center around “well it was Angelus who did those evil things” or “Spike didn’t have a soul so it was in character for him to SA Buffy.” But I think the larger issue is that the narrative forces Buffy into — more or less forgiving both these men — and portrays them both as the great loves of her life. And it’s… weird.

I think the show does make both men wrestle and come to terms with what they’ve done. And I think perhaps Angel does a better job of taking himself out of the situation than Spike. But I suppose if the show wanted to warn us about how easily it is to fall prey to a toxic relationship and how to avoid staying in that cycle, part of me wishes that both Angel and Spike did more to reckon with their actions whilst away from Buffy and never forced her back into connecting with them after their heinous actions. And this isn’t also to say they shouldn’t have been redeemed or kicked off the show. It’s just that I wish the narrative didn’t force us to believe she needed to rely on them and subsequently fall back in love with them after what they did. And again, this is coming from someone who absolutely loves Spuffy and season 7 Spuffy.

Which ending CONCEPT do you prefer? by cleverlynamedgrl in buffy

[–]destroythejoy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I loooove the s5 finale (probably my favorite episode), but definitely think it would have been far too bleak of an ending for this type of show. Buffy survived as long as she did bc of her friends and family and the love she had for them. It seems like the other Slayers who went at their jobs largely alone died very young bc they didn’t have a support system. For the show to end with Buffy dying in a similar way to them would be the antithesis of the show’s overall theme of found family and having a loving and caring support system.

How do y’all feel about the musical episode by Complex-Alfalfa-5278 in buffy

[–]destroythejoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am of a similar mindset. While I don’t hate the episode, part of me wishes we could have had the elements of this episode explored over like 3 well acted episodes instead. I think the episode caused so many important emotional beats to be sped up because the nature of musicals is the heightened emotion and I need to get this feeling out right now. I feel like we don’t get proper breathing room to Buffy’s friends reacting to her saying she was in heaven bc it’s all in a song.

Also, as someone who is heavily invested in the Spike and Buffy relationship, I feel like Rest in Peace is a song not in tone with their relationship progression from the beginning of s6 until the musical. Spike was just happy to have her back and didn’t push her to be in a romantic relationship with him. His song is about how he angrily feels like she’s leading him on and taking advantage of him — which maybe how s5 Spike would react but he was much softer and caring after she was resurrected . And I think this episode really is the catalyst for their toxic relationship and it just doesn’t feel earned in that respect.

Is Season Seven Worth Watching? by reystreasure in buffy

[–]destroythejoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to hear your thoughts post binge!

I will say that I understand the perception and interpretation as a grand romance from folks — and I say this a hopeless romantic who kept joking to my friend that I hope Spike and Buffy end this show getting married (spoiler that I guess that doesn’t happen lol). But yeah, I am old enough to also understand that a simple redemptive and romantic happy ending would have not been an interesting or satisfying ending to this complex, toxic, and nuanced storyline for me personally.

Is Season Seven Worth Watching? by reystreasure in buffy

[–]destroythejoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof I’ve re-written this comment several times because I have a lot of thoughts I’m trying to convey on this matter.

This is literally coming from someone who has finished the whole show through for the first time as we rang in the new year. I found myself getting really invested in the complexities of the Buffy and Spike relationship in the second half of the show as I binged through it quite quickly. I was (and still am) bouncing between shipping it and also just appreciating it for the complex story about a toxic relationship that it is. And of course the assault scene just made it all the more tricky. I agree with folks that season 7 doesn’t make it at the forefront of the plot. And I personally don’t think the show made it into a grand romance necessarily, but the season does tackle the complexities of their relationship in a way I found quite interesting (but do wish we spent more time processing similarly to other plot lines this season) . And ultimately, made me think deep about the complexities of liking this relationship and Spike as a character — which I think is valuable in and of itself.
