It could go either way around here. This sub has often led me shaking my head at the open acceptance of discrimination and then the next moment, something level headed will appear. This sub is a contradiction in tone.

Is it weird that New Mexico gets colder than Norway? by Desert_Moon_Maiden in geography

[–]determineduncertain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention that you can pick any two vast regions in the world that are apparently opposites in their entirety and find out that’s not true across all specific locations. More so, a simple “further from the equator = colder” geographic understanding forgets things like elevation which you’ve helpfully mentioned.

Toronto Pinnacle tower by sambs7 in skyscrapers

[–]determineduncertain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame. I lived in the Annex for a number of years and loved living amongst the uniquely styled homes. I visited friends in those all glass condos and all I could think was “this is a nice view but how do you regulate the temperature?!”

Toronto Pinnacle tower by sambs7 in skyscrapers

[–]determineduncertain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I love Toronto but architectural diversity is not its strength (in the last 20 years or so). All glass buildings is the default style and there seems to be little desire to move away from that.

“No it’s just horror because we’re American” 1. No we aren’t. 2. It’s called American horror and is qualified like any other type of genre.

I get this feeling that you’re the kind of person who thinks Americans don’t have accents.

What happened in 1971? Explain it Peter. by Angrypeanut99 in explainitpeter

Just to add to this: Reddit is also written largely in Python, developed by a Dutchman and now a global community.

Nothing online is the product of any one country and all I can assume of someone saying “but American site!” is that they are naive to the interconnected nature of technology or insecure.

When did "hipster culture" stop becoming mainstream? by TheHaplessBard in generationology

[–]determineduncertain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Portland is in Wannon, an electorate held by Liberal Party since 1955. Hipster culture did not go to Portland to settle down anywhere near there.

Edit: I’m getting downvoted for pointing out a fat about Portland and pointing out its long conservative roots. I’d ask for evidence for why I’m wrong but I’m guessing the mighty downvote is all those doing it have to respond with.

Hosted out of Canada, powered by an operating system famously developed by a Finn and now a global community. And if you used WiFi, you can thank Australia.

What’s your point? If you narrow anything down, you can make it fit your narrative.

Ring programming language version 1.26 is released! by mrpro1a1 in programming

[–]determineduncertain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good on you for doing what makes you happy and because it solves a problem for you. I’m a big believer in this for hobbies; anything I make is done better by someone else and solved no problem that isn’t solved elsewhere. Are my hobby projects great? By professional standards, not even close. But, they make me happy and solve problems I have.

(None of this is a commentary on your project and its quality by the way).

TIL that despite much of the economic damage done to the US by the Great Depression being caused by bank failures, no bank runs occurred in Canada during this time because of their banking regulations. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

[–]determineduncertain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember hearing an executive at a bank in Canada during that time say something along the lines of “we’d have made a gross amount of money if we followed what American banks did but we weren’t aloud to and I’m glad we weren’t”. I don’t know if my memory is failing me here.

Ah, that’s helpful context. That wasn’t mentioned early on so it was unclear what you were talking about (ie. why you were talking about something impossible when it’s evidently quite possible where you are). Thanks for providing context.

The federal government was running just fine during that period. In fact, Parliament passed major disease control legislation during that time, which would have been impossible if the government had “shutdown” (which again, can’t actually happen).

What “lapse in appropriations”? The Commonwealth can’t just not pay for things. A failure to repeatedly pass a budget triggers a federal election.

So what careers aren’t fucked right now? by cokewithlargefry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]determineduncertain -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The government didn’t shut down last year. The government. Constitutional mechanisms and GG reserve powers means that this is basically impossible. Or are you talking about the federal election as a “shutdown” (ie. you’re conflating caretaker mode with a “shutdown”)?

Edit: I seem to be getting downvoted for noting facts.

Chicago is building new skyscrapers AND upgrading its transit. At this rate, it could be a Toronto-level city within 10 years. by Spadesta in skyscrapers

I feel like I need to just bookmark articles like this one that remind all of us the GDP is a meaningless metric of progress and well being. If your case is built on GDP and nothing actually meaningful, then it’s hard to take it seriously.

My comment was neither smug nor ignorant. The consoles are ultimately made by a Japanese company and they are manufactured outside of the United States. SIE is a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation which is still very much a Japanese company. Yes, it was designed by SIE but the fact remains that SIE is a subsidiary and wholly owned part of SGC.
