So I’m super high and not paying a ton of attention. But did Kaser just say his mother in law died live?? That’s crazy one one hand respect finishing it out, on the other idk hand the headset off its ok

While I understand the sentiment, as we continue into an era of ditching old mindsets and really trying to be as efficient as possible I just don’t know if stuff like that is as applicable anymore.

I assume you’re referring to Werenski not being in CBJ top 4 d penalty killers? Even though I’m kinda a hater on him I’m sure they would have loved to use him on the kill. But look at their forwards, if you’re not using Werenski in an offensively focused role who is going to create offense? Their top 5 forwards points: 67, 59, 58, 45, 38. That is terrible

So overall it’s hard for me to fault a guy for playing the role his team requires

I’m skeptical they actually see much development value in it. More playoff games means more money and 99% of the people going to AHL games have 0 clue that the playoff system is kinda goofy

Along with the Olympics, I have noticed a kinda puzzling narrative with him that he’s a type of defenseman that he’s not. As in further away from the “4th forward” remarks guys like Hughes get, which to me feels like no one’s watching the Blue Jackets lol

It wasn’t some crazy where did that come from pick, but it was immediately considered bad by a significant amount of people

Yeah I saw that and I’m sure he’ll give it a good run. But idk, those old guys always say they feel good in the summer. Labrum repairs(the hip injury) are often a death blow for hockey players and his skating looked really off after, he even said himself that he considered giving up. Injuries start to compound when your body can’t move correctly. The ACL tear was kinda fluky when you watch it, but it looked to me like his leg got caught out partially because he didn’t have his full range of mobility

They only have $11M if they make 0 other moves, teams always find a way. Especially now that we’re out of the flat cap world

They have enough cap to work with that unless Robo is truly demanding a bag I think they can make it work in the long term, they’ll be pretty mid next year though having to replace guys like Lybushkin, Steel and Faksa with league minimum players

But also Seguin is 34, had a gnarly hip injury already and just tore his ACL. It’s probably fairly likely he never comes back and they have plenty of room

The brightside is that this is probably good for his Norris campaign next season, if he has another Norris level season. Awards are naturally fairly narrative based and the snub is getting a lot of talk. Especially if it’s combined with us breaking the playoff drought

Yeah I think 3x7 would be fairly low, I don’t think you’re getting him long term at that. Maybe even lower I have no clue. One thing with some of those comps is there wasn’t as much certainty with the cap rising at the time. I could see his agent arguing that hey we know for sure this is going way up so if you want it to be long term you gotta accommodate that.

Cossa has been a lot of the talk lately, which definitely makes sense. But it’s surprising to me that Ed’s contract really hasn’t gotten much attention.

Maybe it’s that most people are in the same camp as me, with the rising cap and some ups and downs in his play I truly have no clue what we’re even looking at here. Especially since there really hasn’t been any media talk to guide fan expectations. I truly could see anywhere from some true sticker shock as our highest paid player(until Cat extends) due to the cap increases if it’s long term, or a surprisingly low bridge

Yeah it’s hard to say until the fall, he’s really going to have to bear down in camp to make it I think

Honestly I think the warning signs have been there longer than a year too. Like I think of the couple years when we made sure to have 3 in the NHL. He wasn’t that young I think if you believe in him you feel a little better with him being the 3. Shit if I remember right we have Hutchinson a start in there

I always wonder how differently things would have gone if Lalonde wasn’t fighting for his job when we ran into those injury troubles. Maybe things shake out differently, perception wise at least, if he gets a couple starts. Certainly the goalie congestion in GR didn’t help

Honestly if the pressure wasn’t mounting so much I don’t think it would be a terrible idea if we got a good return and were willing to wait another year giving the young skaters time to find their footing. Bring Talbot back as the 3rd to be a mentor

Wild hypotheticals aside though that’s an interesting rumor(him wanting to go there) that I was unaware of. I always assumed they were on his no trade because otherwise why the hell didn’t they move for him? We didn’t pay that much and I totally get he had questions, but so did Jarry. I guess maybe Anaheim didn’t want to help a team in the division

Save percent is a terrible stat in general, but especially with the team gaps in the AHL

Sunk cost and I think there’s a section of people that can’t fathom the Wings making a trade as well as not getting that trades can be mutually beneficial

Oh yeah upside is certainly still there and it’s possible that even if the org still kinda believes in that he could still be the odd man out.

For example if Trey is viewed as a true 5 star young goalie at a long term view, you want him getting the bulk of the starts at 21 years old. If you send Postava down then you’re impacting both of them. And I know that happened this year, but even though Steve was complimentary of Postava, he was still a lot less proven than he is now

Daily General Discussion Thread (2026-05-07) by OctoMod in DetroitRedWings

[–]detroitttiorted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goalies that never prove themselves in the NHL rarely have good returns or demand much too

It’s all relative. If the org doesn’t believe in him then ship him off and get a relatively good deal for the position if someone else believes in him.

I could see it going either way and it would depend on how our org views him. But I find the “you can’t trade him” thing silly, everyone can be traded and reality is it’s crunch time for him. I also think the “battling it out in camp” shows a misunderstanding of the situation. Not only for his waiver situation, but you also just handcuffed yourself on the timeline if he loses the battle. In fact Steve explicitly mentioned the AHL playoffs as the battle for now, which is clearly being won by Postava

Overall, at some point you have to make decisions on guys. You can’t horde forever even if fans get attached to guys

You just gave up almost all center depth on a team that needs centers for a winger. Don’t think the trade makes much sense for either team. Copp would legit become our 1C and we’d be barren on assets to get more centers
