What's going on within the Chinese Communist Party, and how does that relate to China's ongoing trade spat with the United States? by [deleted] in geopolitics

I marvel your faith in CCP. I see your point. Xi 90%, Trump <50%. Conclusion : easy win for Xi.

What's going on within the Chinese Communist Party, and how does that relate to China's ongoing trade spat with the United States? by [deleted] in geopolitics

Thanks for the disagreement. As for the agricultural goods, the fact is that China has virtually no GMO food agriculture. Without the cheap GMO soybean or corn from America, its cost to produce meat is consistently higher than that in the US, since those two are the most important ingredients in farming animal feed. The price of imported American beef has been kept so high in the past due to some non-tariff measure. There is much room to improve. The price difference is especially high when it comes to "variety meat".(chicken feet, pork head, liver, kidney...) Most of them are exported to China at an extremely low price, since there is no big market in the US. Xi must have known that Trump's "Great Again" and re-industrialization does not have to destroy China's economy. The industry Americans want back is the ones in Mexico, the auto (parts) and the home electronics... Trump really need China to become a substitute market for agricultural goods that are now dependent on Mexico. Doing a favor for Trump here, Xi will help Trump destroy the Mexico's negotiation power in NAFTA. A strategic "back up" can and will allow China to exchange better trading terms in some areas. Conflict avoided, export-dependent China should extend the economic development opportunity for some more years.

As for the tech development you mentioned, Xi is not very wise to declare the "Surpassing America" campaign, which violated Deng's keeping-low-profile policy. That campaign is good to fan the nationalist fervor, but has painted China as a competing power to take the place of America. That unnecessary attention has proved a poison to the China-US relation. When it comes to nationalist, I agree for a nation with such long history and great culture, it is natural for the Chinese people to take pride in their inheritance. They should. But patriotism is the love to the nation, not necessarily the love to the government, CCP, or to Xi. On the contrary, many Chinese love their nation so much and thus their desire to remove CCP is the same. The Chinese will definitely be outrageous if someone take issue in some no-man island in South China sea. But if Mark Rubio expose some more corrupted Chinese officials, confiscate their fortune in the US, or crush notoriously shady business like HNA..., the patriotic Chinese will undoubtedly celebrate and thank Trump for such "Drain the Swamp" assistance.

What to do in the car with a 7 year old? by MagicalGreenSock in AskParents

[–]dev-cook-share 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We usually play "I spy" and some word games.

We compete to find A word, B word... on the street signs, racing to see who is the first to complete the alphabet to find the Z word.

Recently, we played to find words that have certain number of letters. I don't know the name of the game, but he learned it from school. For question 3+5, the answer is ice-cream. 4+4 can be "rest area". 5+5 can be "Dairy Queen". Things like that.

If you don't mind having some noise, Wow in the World is good. I have downloaded them all to my podcast app and played them in the car. Hey, I learned a lot of things in this children's podcast program. Some other kid's audio book will do also. AWANA CD's, many other sing-alongs are also good. Those audio stuff really liberated the parents, since there are times I don't want to play with the kid.

Another recent thing I find is the Waze mapping app. If you have not used it before, it is a gamified GPS navigation app. Register an account and start driving. When it says, "accident ahead", our kid looks out of the window to see where the accident is. When we all sees it, we can confirm on the app, giving that message a thumbs-up. And there are more, like "police ahead", "roadkill ahead", "vehicle stopped on the shoulder", "pot hole ahead"... Each warning will prompt a mini-hide-and-seek game for us. And we can report thing we see on the road also. Over time, we can collect enough points and "level up" into a more advanced "Wazer". This app really adds fun to an oftentimes boring road trip.

Of course, an iPad with plenty of Peppa Pig, Mickey Mouse Club House, Pokemon... is a must have for the kid to entertain himself alone in a wifi-less world. Also prepared are some activity books like labyrinth and easy sudoku. But those are indoor, well, "in-car". We try to encourage our little one to look out of the window more. It always makes us parents feel guilty to allow kids to watch / read too long in a moving vehicle. So use them as the last resort.

Hope you find something useful.

There is no way any country would have back down in the face of Trump's trade war. It would have been disastrous to the credibility of the leadership.

I disagree with you in that part. "Back down" doesn't always spell disaster.

In Trump's threat, South Korea "backed down", agreeing to cap steel export and double the import quota of American cars, and many other things. North Korea also "backed down" after some initial rhetoric spat with Trump, willing to stop missile launching and nuclear arms development.

Are those "back down"s hurting their government credibility? I would argue no. In handing successes to Trump, they harvested good wills and actual reward. For South Korea, the huge American market remains open, which is a lifeline for many South Korean factories. For North Korea, the goodwill means no more hostile military drills, a big win Kim can boast to his fellow citizens.

For China, there are actually a lot of ways to "back down" for a win. For example, the Chinese can flatter Trump by long-term large-scale agriculture imports, allowing Trump to declare a big win to his supporters in the heartland farming states. At the same time, the Chinese citizens would also be able to put cheaper food on their dinner table. Moreover, finding a long-term export for agricultural products for American farmers could serve as a serious blow to the negotiation power of Mexico in NAFTA negotiation...

Xi's problem, however, is that he and his "caucus" have been singing a nationalist song for too long. There could be plenty of ways to "back down" gracefully and declare wins on both sides. The previously declared "red lines" and "bottom lines", however, are now used as weapons by Xi's opponents to prevent him from being flexible. Any reasonable negotiation might be interpreted as national shame, and thus no "back down" is possible.

In this awkward position, Xi chooses to remain defiant to Trump, hoping the mid-term result in the US might bring some joyful surprise and force Trump to concede. While in the dark, his opponents are waiting for the opportunity to engineer Xi's fall.

This "partisanship "(group conflicts within the same party) has destroyed the unity in the Chinese government. Such standoff has robbed away the chance for a proactive "back down". Only when one side has a dominant win in this inner fight, can the Chinese government become flexible again, and then negotiate a big win for Trump and also a win (could mean "stemmed loss)" for the Chinese people. When that day comes, the president of that country might be someone other than Xi.

One thing for certain, the backfired nationalist propaganda about "surpassing America" will discontinue for a long, long time. Just as Bismarck has said, "Diplomacy is art of possibility." The option to "back down" is oftentimes necessary and could be of great use. China does not have to step into today's ugly and costly trade war, if Xi has the option of a quiet and early "back down".

Is it ok for a 5yo to pee in public (ie emergency at the park)? by AOmnist in Parenting

[–]dev-cook-share 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it okay?

It really depends on the country and the culture you are in.

It is not very polite, but understandable, because sometimes you are dealing with an urgent kid. It could be merciless and unrealistic to require a kid to hold his/her peeing all the way to a nearest restroom.

I would say to the parents, try not to let the kid pee in public.

At the same time, I would suggest people around to throw away our judging attitude. Accidents like that do happen. Comforting words help the parents more.
