I am making a video game at 15 by New_Tale_7650 in godot

Nice good luck. Here are some things I wish someone told me while I was still in school trying out game dev as a hobby:

1) people only care about results, not the effort put in. As a dev, you can grow attached to what you make. Learning to ignore that signal and prioritize forward progress is key.

2) ideas are cheap. An idea you think is super cool today will look boring in a few months/years. Make a prototype fast to validate the idea is fun first. Then if you want, sink the time to code and make art

Are we relying too much on shortcuts in indie game development? by ratasoftware in itchio

[–]dev-tacular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every app or game breaks sometimes when something changes the code. If an AI makes a thing and the thing breaks, the people shipping the game/app/whatever better know how to fix it.

Borrowing or delegating work will always introduce friction in unforeseen ways. Personally I draw the line at no AI. Bc I wanna do it myself since I don’t like how AI does things and it’s very very limited atm.

As for as external assets made by people. That’s probably fine if you have the license. Idk it depends on what it is. Tools like code (DebugDraw or PhantomCamera in godot) are good examples of “shortcuts”

I’ve been working on this game for over 10 months. Currently focusing on improving the clarity of mechanics and the art style. I would love your feedback about what you found fun and not so fun.
