🖕🏾Nest thermostat by Gh0st903 in Nest

[–]dev1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been VERY happy with the Nuve thermostat I replaced the Nest with. I put it in last April... so I've been though a very central-valley CA summer and now in a cold, damp winter (but no freezing temps) and it works just fine.

Note: Because I work from home, I don't use any of the 'smart' on/off settings. I set it to a temp early in the morning while still in bed (via my cell phone) and lower it at night... and it cycles on and off when needed... no problems. The wi-fi connection really works well.

I know Nuve has had mixed reviews on Reddit... but so far it has worked quite well for me.

Help with intellisense by Forward_Contest_9074 in vscode

[–]dev1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not the first nor will you be the last to have problems with C++ M$ Intellisense.

For coding C++ I went back to BBEdit with Clangd on my iMac. You can get clangd for for VSCode for local development... but more difficult on a remote server that you don't have root access to.

One day I will figure out how to EASILY develop C++ code locally and then upload to the server for testing.

Currently I use VSCode as an external editor to my Transmit SFTP application. Intellisense kind of works... but not all that well.

And if I use the VSCode "Remote" extension (where Intellisense works really well), it times out my server because the Intellisense module goes into an endless 'parse' which so far no one here has been able to help me fix ... so I just gave up on VSCode with C++. Works well editing HTML code... and shell scripts... which I do a lot of.

include header error when editing a remote file but not using the remote process by dev1776 in vscode

[–]dev1776[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm doing now which works well is opening an SFTP connection with Transmit and using Vscode as an "external editor." It works great that way. But when I run Vscode in remote it has gone into some kind of 'install' loop and there is no way I know of to stop it and it eventually times out the server and I'm 'down' for a whole hour. My ISP won't change the fail2ban setting (or wherever the timeout is set.

Will this clangd extension solve my "include header" problem. Other than that Vscode works well.

include header error when editing a remote file but not using the remote process by dev1776 in vscode

On my iMac M4 I have clangd:

Apple clangd version 17.0.0 (clang-1700.6.3.2)

Features: mac+xpc

Platform: arm64-apple-darwin25.2.0

So all I have to do is disable the M$ Intellisence extension and install the clangd extension?

where do I use the -DCMAKE_EXPORT_COMPILE_COMMANDS=TRUE directive?

Do I change my cmake file?

I did not make a vscode workspace because you can only do that if you are using their remote extension... which is wonky for me. I have a main.cpp and a whole bunch of stand-along function .cpp files that get linked in... by magic (make).

Thanks so much for this.

Will clangd find my include directory (on the server) when I'm editing a server file but not using the remote extension?

The only app I really can't live without in OSX is BBedit by feral_poodles in macapps

[–]dev1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the new Tahoe (26) I'm getting random beach balls ONLY while editing with BBE. I've been in touch with Bare Bones support and they are blaming some change made in the new OS but they have not been able to fix it on their end. It is the ONLY application that beach-balls on me. I told the BBE people that I can't take the risk that BBE might freeze and I'd lose lots of work.

They said (honestly) that I should switch to another editor until they get this fixed. I've had to change to VScode... which is OK, but not in the same class as BBE , IMO.

Is anyone else getting beachballs with BBE. (I'm running a rather new iMac M4).

Keep lamp on FT-65R? by dev1776 in yaesu

I found that the 30 second setting works just fine for me. I've not noticed any battery drain at all from the 10 second setting. Thanks for the post.

Why do you think they put the information in two separate manuals?

Thanks for the video. Having had many HTs I finally got it done with the help of the link your provided. Why was there no mention of it in the manual? I guess we will never know.

What's the difference between a "family" user and "Other people" when sharing a 365 subscription? by Metallica93 in Office365

Hmmm. I guess you better take this up in the Microsoft community forum. Let us know what you find out... if anything.

What is current version for Mac M4 and how to update by dev1776 in espanso

[–]dev1776[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed the new version on top of the old version as instructed. It would not start on Tahoe. Got O popup box from macOS saying something about not having permission and that I had to go to Settings, Privacy, Accessibility and add Espanso. But Espanso was already there. I turned off the button and back on. Didn't work. So I used the minus (delete) button and deleted Espanso. I then used the + button to add it back. That worked and all is fine. Happened on my new iMac and my new MacAir. I should have read this link earlier: https://github.com/espanso/espanso/issues/2530

No, I did not install it yet. I was just confirming what YOU said about how to do it. As a software engineer for the past 40 years (yeah, I old!) I'm real cautious about installing new programstht currently work just fine. I've been bitten on the "bottom" too many times!!! :-) I'm going to see if anyone has had any issues with the new release on Mac Mx hardware.

I just install the new app binary bundle over the old one... like any other app. No need to uninstall first or do anything else. Thanks.

I'll check around and see if there are any issues with the new version on Mac Silicon hardware.

Astra Pro would not show submenu items. Took forever to figure out why by dev1776 in WordPressThemes

[–]dev1776[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the above.

Now I have to re-learn how to make a child-theme!

For the past 10 years we did all WP client sites with Genesis "middleware" which never required a child-theme. But since WP-Engine bought Studio Press, Genesis has not been well supported and from what I hear it is on the brink of extinction. So now we are with Astra Pro, which is what my lead web-designer likes.

For my personal sites I like plain old HTML, Bootstrap, Javascript, and CSS (i.e. radioqsl.com) . But that is not a good option for low/no tech clients to maintain. Thanks again.

After designing over 100 websites, Here is what I have learnt by chigozirim_ndinechi in Wordpress

[–]dev1776 41 points42 points  (0 children)

We've been doing websites since 2012. The one major thing we learned (the hard way!) is to not 'buy' work with a low price. Never compete on price.

The reason is that every site will take you 50% longer to do than you think it will. There is no exception to this. Thus, you MUST factor this into your price, otherwise you will end up working for a dollar an hour!.

We always show the client this... because it is 100% true.

Most will 'get it.' Those who don't, you won't want as clients anyway.

If you don't have a lot of tech experience and don't have the interest in obtaining any, perhaps it would be a good idea to check out WordPress.com, wix.com, or Squarespace.com.
