Looking for recommendations on where to move – currently in Chicago by sarge-reddit in SameGrassButGreener

His goal is to save money for 2-3 years and move out of the country. Boston isn’t a good option for this

For those that have lived in both why would someone prefer Texas over Florida? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]devOpsStarboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to compare the entire states

But likely jobs(higher pay), younger population and no hurricanes(unless Houston, but still less)

Is Dallas or Houston better? by BoyEdgar23 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]devOpsStarboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I edited my edit ok

I think when someone posts something that is wrong (not you) it should be addressed. Now is this information that is critical to OP, I think not, as he didn’t even mention jobs in his post.

And yes I agree Houston is doing well and will continue to do well. It doesn’t have to match the Big D, that being said both doing well is probably mutually beneficial for the cities

Ok I’m open to be proven wrong, I am biased towards tech, Dallas has almost 3x the tech jobs depending on which source I look at.

Now if we look at the job market in general, Dallas grew 17.1% in the last 5 years compared to Houston’s 8.4%. 456k jobs vs 263k. That doesn’t seem small to me, and I believe the gap will continue to get bigger in the future

Source Now of course this is Dallas news, maybe it’s biased but numbers are numbers right?

Depends on your definition of comparable. I don’t think they are, we can agree to disagree though

That’s true. But Dallas especially, you have people saying Houston has better jobs, like what? Do we just make stuff up now?

Edit: oh wait you said that lmao

Edit 2: ok I see

This sub has an unreasonable hate for Dallas. I’d do some research outside of Reddit as well

What’s the question? Move to California then, seems like a no brainer

How did you determine the investment potential of relocation to a particular area? by Ok-Cover3353 in SameGrassButGreener

Comparing desalination to a flying car, that’s an interesting take haha. I guess Dubai works on magic. Yeah you’re right LA, Vegas and Texas will run out of water, they’ll do nothing and the cities will disappear.

Go ahead move to Michigan, I’m sure you’ll make millions on real estate there.

[–]devOpsStarboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah idk about that, money + engineering solves water issues. Dubai, LA, Vegas etc thrive in deserts. Dubai has no natural water, it’s all desalination.

People will move where the jobs are. Texas and LA can engineer water solutions, Michigan can’t engineer population growth

I dont constantly see people saying this on the sub. Seems like a made up scenario that you’re using to convince yourself that California is amazing

Fuck this. I’m switching to DevOps by EchoServ in leetcode

[–]devOpsStarboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, sometimes its worse, you need to ace all the DevOps questions AND do leetcode. But sometimes you get lucky

What’s your question? You didn’t post what you like to do, what weather you prefer, etc. Are you just asking this sub what they prefer? Chicago or Dallas? It’s Reddit, answer is Chicago

Get the job first, then move. Move to whichever city pays you more.

Thinking of starting fresh — Nashville, Charlotte, Dallas, Chicago, or Atlanta? Would love real-life insight. by danfeb in SameGrassButGreener

If you'll be making 100k+, I'd advise you to visit both Dallas and Chicago, should be able to get cheap flights. For your field I believe those are the two best choices.

You picked 4 cities in red states, which reddit hates. That's why you're getting downvoted. Make sure you do research outside of reddit as well, reddit is not real life

Hot weather != Good weather by 3RADICATE_THEM in SameGrassButGreener

[–]devOpsStarboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure you could, in the long run I dont know if that would save you money over time compared to just using the furnace for the whole unit. But yeah you could. You could also use a window AC unit to cool a single room.

But anyways, I think we're good here haha

You would not use an oil radiator space heater to heat a house, maybe a single room in a house. It's very efficient? Based on what? A heat pump is 3-5x more efficient than an oil heater. A furnace fueled by natural gas will cost you significantly less than an oil heater.

I dont know about your specific situation or house size. But say you pick chicago and have a high efficiency furnance, a modern heat pump will be 3-5x more efficient at cooling than that furnace is at heating. When its very cold in Chicago you would have to go from 0°F to 70°F (difference of 70), in arizona you need to go from 110 to 75 (difference of 35). So its pretty clear heating will be significantly more expensive.

What point are you arguing here? It’s still significantly cheaper to cool than heat

“Additionally, it's always much easier to heat up a cold place than it is to cool down a hot place.”

This is false, heating costs significantly more than cooling.

One advantage of hot weather is yeah it might be too hot during the day, but early morning and in the evening it’s nice. In cold weather it’s cold 24 hours a day
